Pleased to report that the long weekend’s woody action at Kawau Island was an absolute triumph. Now in its second year, the Spring Splash Regatta — a joint venture between the Kawau Boating Club, Ponsonby Cruising Club, and Waitematawoodys — continues to grow in both size and spirit.

It’s still early days for what’s shaping up to be a great annual tradition, but this year’s event had an unmistakably upbeat, jaunty vibe. Everywhere you looked, people were smiling, swapping yarns, and clearly having a great time afloat and ashore.

I’ll apologise up front for being light on the yacht racing and prize-giving coverage — for reasons I won’t bore you with — but rest assured, the competition and camaraderie were both in full swing.

Sunday’s Woodys Classic Parade was the visual highlight of the weekend, showcasing a handsome flotilla of 17 classic launches for all those anchored in Bon Accord Harbour and watching from waterfront properties. Aside from a brief 10-minute burst of H₂O at the start, the weather came right and the parade looked spectacular.

A big thank you to the classic skippers and crews who took part — your efforts made for a great show.

Helming a boat among moored craft while trying to take photos is a fine line between “challenging” and “slightly reckless,” so I’m especially grateful to Dean Watchlin, Murray Deeble and Richard Bicknell for sharing their superb photos from the weekend.

NEIL COLEMAN’S CLASSIC POND YACHT 

Inspired by the recent WW story on the 100 years old pond yacht – MARANUI, Neil Coleman made contact with WW in regard to the yacht his father, Bill Coleman, owned and sailed.

Neil commented that he understands the model was built by his father’s uncle – George Dacre, ,who was a boatbuilder for Baileys Yacht Builders in Devonport / Northcote, possibly around the 1930s. . 
The original sails were long lost, but Neil has restored the model to what he thinks it may have originally looked like . 
The sail reg # B57  is in homage to Neil’s  Dad i.e.  B for Bill Coleman, and 57 was the reg # of Bill’s first yacht – a Zeddie called WILD ROSE.     

Neil spent many hours sanding and painting this exquisite hull, and decks along with the pen lined boards .The rig is based on an existing Auckland B class keeler called NGATIRA B2 (owned by Steve Horsley and recently relaunched after a 5 year rebuild – refer below photo ex Rogers Miles fb)

MYSTERY YACHT HIGH & DRY – ITS NGATIRA

Had a few mystery launches on WW high and dry recently so seems fair that we feature a yacht today.

NGATIRA REFIT UPDATE

Back in June 2016 Steve Horsley was on the verge of selling his 1904 Charles Bailey Jnr built 49’ B-Class gaffer – Ngatira, link below to that story. As so often happens the To Do list kept growing and next thing Steve’s into a total refit. Long term WW readers will remember Steve previously rebuilt Ngatira almost single handed. He is a seriously talent man and puts a lot of ’tradesman’ to shame.

I caught up with Steve over the weekend at the Mahurangi Regatta, Steve is a past commodore of the Mahurangi Cruising Club and produces their stunning year book.

I asked Steve how the few wee jobs were coming along and he shared the above photos. Ngatira is now closed in and the varnish (Uroxsys) is getting applied. 

Steves gifted with a very considerate wife – Jo, not many would up up with a 1904 collection of kauri planks to remain at the front door for several years 🙂

I was brave and asked for an ETA back in the water – all I could get was soon Houghty, soon 🙂

23-09-2024 UDATE – Its been a long winter but owner Steve reports that its all down hill now and he will be splashing this summer – fingers crossed.

CYA Classic Yacht Regatta 2019 – Race #1 – 37 Photos

At the end of the day I shot down to Devonport Wharf with the tele-lens & just caught the fleet sliding down the harbour, a little overcast but that would have been a + for the crews.
I’ll attempt to ID the yachts – scroll over the photos to see names – if I get it wrong, let me know 😉
 
As you read this I’ll be winging my way south to Lake Rotoiti (Nelson Lakes) for the 20th NZ Antique & Classic Boat Show, mooching around Nelson for a few days so should have some good southern content next week.

Robin Elliott sent me the above link to a very cool video that Australian Ian Smith has just put up on-line of how he built a replica of the 1919 traditional seam-batten Sydney 18 footer – Britannia in 2001-2002. Its approx 15min long & covers from lofting to launch > sailing. Great footage & a good commentary.

Robin also shared the link below to the ‘The Open Boat’ website which is a treasure trove of videos on the Australian small wooden sailing world. Do not blame me if your still watching it hours later 🙂

CYA 2017 Classic Regatta
I snapped a few quick photos, below, yesterday while I was heading over to Westhaven to fuel up & then decided to pop in at Regatta HQ for a cleansing ale. More photos tomorrow from the Regatta’s classic woody launch parade &  lunch cruise to Riverhead Hotel. If you are out & about this morning & want to see the fine collection of classic woody launches, we will be passing in front of the RNZYS at approx. 10.30am.

Classic Yacht – Ngatira 4- sale

Now I don’t do many blatant 4-sale posts on ww but the gaff cutter Ngatira is owned by a long time buddy & all round nice guy – Steve Horsley.
Ngatira was built in 1904, is the finest example of a Charles Bailey Jnr racing boat of this era and is of historic significance. She has recently undergone an extensive restoration / rebuild back to its original configuration e.g gaff, staysail, jib and topsail.

Ngatira is not only a stunner on the water, she is also rather quick and has had good success racing in CYA regattas.
She was a Logan beater when first launched to race against Kotiri and still beats a few Logan’s today. She can be raced easily with a small crew of 3 or 5, and cruised with only two.
Basic but comfortable inside as it was in the day, sleeps up to four.
She is in good condition and has a good pedigree with a well documented history.

John sent in the collection of photos above of woodys currently hauled out at the Sandspit Yacht Club & asked the question is SYC the new ‘Traditional Boat Yard’ ? I think I would have to agree with him, a grand line-up & with their impressive haul out set-up + the legendary Greg Lees Boat Builders alongside, you would struggle to find a more woody friendly facility.

Karewa

KAREWA
The tugboat (Karewa) was built in 1951 by Lidgards for the Department of Works to push barges on the Piako river for the construction of bridges. From there she went to the Tauranga Harbour Board as pilot/survey vessel, finally coming to Warkworth in the early 1980s, where she has been working tirelessly since at Lees Boatbuilders Ltd. In the above photos she is seen assisting Steve Horsley’s yacht Ngatira.
