Around The Yards – Warkworth

Alan Sexton was recently hauled out at Robertson’s Yard, Warkworth & snapped this interesting collection of boats. Alan reported that the ‘Jane Gifford’ was also up for a bottom paint and the Harland’s ‘Plain Jane’ (designed and built by Chris Robertson) was in the shed for a top to bottom refurbishment.

The above photos of the boats on the hard caught Alan’s eye.
James Groenhart’s 28′, 1951, Lidgard built ‘Ballerina’ was looking very smart, but then she should, having spent 5 weeks last year in Colin Brown’s shed for a re-fit. photos here https://waitematawoodys.com/2016/02/10/ballerina-restoration/

Now Lady Rere is an interesting launch, she started off as a bare shell of a hull, reputed to be ~100yrs old, Alan believes Robertson’s built the new superstructure and interior and engineering. Do we know any more about her?

The centre-boarder ‘Tirranna’ pictured is a Hartley at around 28’& in a moment of weakness (on my behalf) sneaks into todays ww post . Alan commented it was good to see a boat of her type in immaculate condition.

BALLERINA REFURBISHMENT

photos & details ex James Groenhart

I spied Ballerina at Mahurangi during the 2016 Regatta weekend & she was looking superb. James told me she had recently spent 5 weeks in the care of Colin Brown & Dave Walker at Jones Road, Omaha (same site as Anita Bay & Little Tasman). While she was structurally in great condition there were some areas that needed attention.

Colin & Dave completed the following work to a superb standard, & interpreted what James wanted perfectly, as well as being completely sympathetic to the character of the boat.

  • A new hardwood worm shoe was made & fitted.
  • Mahogany cabin sides & coamings were taken back & minor rot repairs carried out, particularly around the sliding side windows & timber fixed window beading.
  • Butterfly skylight hatch was restored & glass re set to stop leaks.
  • A new timber forehatch was made & fitted.
  • Duckboard deck was replaced.
  • Cabin top grab rails removed, restored & re fastened.
  • Repainted hull (using Altex ‘Classic White’), cabin sides & deck.

Great to see work like this recorded so thoroughly.

Ballerina

BALLERINA
photos ex James Groenhart – details ex owner & Harold Kidd.

Ballerina was built in 1951 by ‘Lidgard’ (Ngapipi Rd ? ) & is of kauri carvel construction. Her first owner was C.B.H. Miller of George St., Morrinsville. She is 28′ x 9′ x 2’6″ and had a 100hp Osco Ford V8 petrol engine (Mercury 239 cu in) when launched. Miller shifted to live at 6 Bongard St., Mission Bay about 1957 and sold her sometime after 1961. In 1973 she was owned by L.G. Armstrong of 12 Saltburn Road, Milford and kept at Milford. Ballerina is now powered by a 60hp Ford diesel.
James & his partner Laura purchased her in November 2014 & after some minor repairs at Lees Boat Builders & a new timber mast by Colin Brown, she is being regularly used & enjoyed.photos

As the photos above show, she is a very pretty classic.  As I said on Monday, its hard to get a sub 30′ boat to look proportionally ‘right’, Ballerina looks right 🙂
