CLASSIC WOODYS BOAT SHOW AT OBC
On Sunday we held the inaugural classic woodys boat show – hosted by the OBC Marina.
WW was holding hands with Auckland’s – Outdoor Boating Club on Tamaki Drive as they celebrated their annual open day. Magic location and set up – check out the club here https://www.obc.co.nz
As it seems to always happen at woodys events, the weather was 10/10, a perfect winners day. Check out the photo gallery above.
The day had all the ingredients for a fun family day out – Nice boats + Nice people, topped off with classic trailer boats, classic cars, food/coffee trucks, kids activities and a bonus – the team from LEGASEA , the kiwi hero’s that are dedicated to restoring the abundance, biodiversity and health of NZ’s marine environment – check out the website https://legasea.co.nz
Enjoy the photos, it was a great day and everyone left with a smile on their face.
LOOKING FOR INFORMATION ON THE CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH – TAUMANGI WW was contacted during the week by Peter Langley in regard to the classic wooden launch – TAUMANGI, once owned by his father.
Some history -TAUMANGI is a 36’ carvel planked bridge-decker. Originally in Auckland in the 1950- 1960’s then went to Tauranga and re-decked / modernised by boat builder Bill Visser. Peter’s father owned her from around 1960-1972 then the boat came back to Auckland and was moored up the Panmure basin for years.
Peter saw her for sale around 2013 through Busfield marine but he has not seen her since. Peter commented that she had a lot of varnish woodwork originally when his dad owned her but when last seen the cabins tops were painted light blue .
Can anyone help with what became of TAUMANGI, Peter’s thoughts were she is probably moored up a river somewhere. REMEMBER – GREAT FAMILY DAY OUT TOMORROW AT THE OBC OPEN DAY
CLASSIC WOODEN EX WORKBOAT – ARIANA / GLENROWAN / TE KAWAU
Earlier in the week WW was contacted by Sven Wiig the owner of the classic wooden ex workboat – ARIANA. ARIANA made an appearance on WW back in Oct 2020 – link here https://waitematawoodys.com/2020/01/10/ariana/
I’ll hand over to Sven to tell the story –
“Today I had a bit of a breakthrough researching my boats history. You may remember I bought ARIANA in about 2020 and have been searching for more information ever since. A while back I discovered that before she was named ARIANA and before GLENROWAN she was named TE KAWAU as shown in the top photo above which I had just discovered.
The other photos are also from the 1950’s. She was then owned by Bill Ryland and fished out of Wanganui. Bill owned her until 1974 when she was sold to the Turner family and moved to Nelson where John Turner ran her. Sometime in the 1980’s she changed hands again and was renamed GLENROWAN then to the John Stewart who had her converted then I bought her.
So I’m hoping someone knows who owned her before Bill? The Turner family knew of the boat in the 1940’s as old man Turner fished on her then, possibly out of Picton. My best guess is that she was built by Lanes of Picton but searching the records does not come up with her name. I have been told that she may have been built in Lyttleton so maybe Millar Bros? She is similar to other boats built by Lanes and Millar and Tunnage so who knows?
ARIANA / TE KAWAU is currently still on the hard where I have been undertaking a major rebuild / restoration of her.”
WW has asked to be kept updated on the project, so fingers crossed for more stories. In the mean time can we learn more about this classic woody.
Check out the size of the snapper on the trailer in the b/w photos
Back in October 2019 woody IanMcDonald sent in some photos of the wooden launch – KOMUTU on the hard in Whagarei. We learnt that she was built by Curnow & Wilton in Motueka in 1950>52 (launched Dec 1952) to a Cliff Nalder design. Spec were 42’ x 12’ x 3’6”.
Fast forward to early 2025 and thanks to a tme appearance we get to have a gander down below. Forward motion these days is via 230hp Detroit 671 engine.
The rock bottom pricing continues – the classic wooden launch PANIA is on tme (thanks Ian McDonald) and at last glance the highest bid was $110 and the reserve had been met.
CLASSIC WOODEN BOAT RIVER CRUISE – TRIP REPORT Fridays Classic woodys cruise to the waterfront Riverhead Tavern for lunch was a grand day afloat, 13 classic wooden craft made the journey up the upper reaches of the Waitemata Harbour to the historic tavern. It was extra special with several first-timers making the trip. We were blessed with the weather and also having just one of the tourist ferries making the trip on the day, which allowed us to berth a lot of the boat on the jetty.
Special mention to the 7 classic launch skippers and partners that came by water taxi (MY GIRL) – Cam Malcolm (Connie V), Rodger Moore (ex Te Hauraki), Jason Davies (Lucinda), and those via car – Ian Gavin (Florance Dawn), Matt Cooper (Korawai) and John Chambers (Ngarunui), Murray Deeble ( Waikiore) combined with the 13 boats on the water we had crews from 20 classic craft present on the day. Very happy with that turn out.
True to form, the tavern and its staff extended their usual warm hospitality. Enjoy the photo gallery
These days it seems that when it comes to classic wooden boat locations, the ‘new black’ is the Bay of Islands.
So I’m very happy to report that two woodys have found new owners / homes at Waiheke Island, Auckland.
Recently we helped find a new owner for the 28’ John Brooke designed, Walter Deeming built launch – SEAFARER and she is now moored at the island. Photos above of the delivery voyage, the bacon and egg pie is a masterpiece, made by the new owner’s father. More photos of the launch here https://waitematawoodys.com/2025/04/09/classic-wooden-launch-seafarer-a-peek-down-below-4sale/
CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH – NOR WEST – A Peek Down Below
Back into 2016 the 33’ Lanes Motor Boat Co. built in 1951 launch – NOR WEST appeared on WW, at the time her new owner, Peter Crane, was looking for information on her past. Well WW delivered . Link here https://waitematawoodys.com/2016/02/20/nor-west-2/
Fast forward to earlier this yea and NOR WEST was back on the market, hopefully now sold.
As seen in the photos above over the last 9 years there has been plenty of TLC handed out and she is a very fine look classic wooden boat.
Quick over view – built from kauri, 9’ bean and draws 3’. Powered by a 100hp 6 cyl. Ford diesel that sees her cruise at 7.5 knots

Todays story is in answer to a request from Brian Peet, the secretary of the Zephyr Owners Association. WW doesn’t normally run stories like this but in my book Brian is good man and is probably better known to WW readers as the author and publisher of the impressive book ‘DES TOWNSON – A SAILING LEGACY’, so the story makes it onto WW. I’ll let Brian tell the story:
“Above are five historic Zephyr photos taken by Don Roberts, who in 1956 owned #4 ‘Why’. Unfortunately they’re low res photo-copies, so it would be great to access originals for scanning. Efforts to track down Don or his descendants have been unsuccessful. Next year will be the Zephyr class 70th anniversary and early imagery is keenly sought. Could there be a WW reader who can help establish contact with Don or his descendants?
What’s known is Don purchased the forth production hull from Des Townson in 1956 while living at 15 Highland Ave, Mt Albert. A year later he sold the completed boat to Nev Thom and repeated the process with unfinished hull #25. In 1964 he’s recorded as owning Kitty cat ‘Katawall’ – possibly living in Clevedon. In 1980 there’s a record of him on Papakura owning ‘U Choose’, a Davidson 28. Any help from your readers would be much appreciated. “
Brian Peet can be contacted via the WW comments section or on email at peetfamily@orcon.net.nz
Todays photo popped up recently on one of the social media fb streams and shows the launch MALIBU II coming to the rescue of a submerged run-about just visible in the bottom right corner of the photo.
A gent named Graham Hill commented that MALIBU II was assisting the chopper (owned at the time by Alexander Helicopters) to attach strops from the chopper to the run-about, to left it out of the water. Would have been an ‘interesting’ lift, one would assume they allowed for the dead weight of the water.
There was chat that the photo would have been from the early 1968 > Nov 1971 period, but based on HDK’s comment below it must have been in early 1968.
Back in Sept 2019 we learnt in a previous WW story from Harold Kidd that she was built by Shipbuilders in 1952 for Graham West and shipped down via Dunedin by WAIPIATA in 1955. She operated on Wanaka until December 1968 when she was relocated to Stewart Island. Her dims were 40′ x 12′ x 3′ and she had a Perkins 6 cylinder diesel. 2nd photo above from this story.
Do we know what became of MALIBU II – given the lift rafts visible in both photos, safe to assume she was in charter / tourism use.
