SLOW MOVING TUESDAY

Has been a few weeks of back to back woody boating activity, so today is a case of slowing down – So when the WW email inbox pinged with a note from Bay of Islands woody photographer – Dean Wright, my eyes lit up. As always Dean was sending in some great photos from mooching around the Bay of Islands aboard his magnificent woody – Arethusa .

Todays are from Deans weekend trip to Mimiwhangata and starting at the top we see one of my favourite workboat woodys – the Roger Carey designed (1954), built by Curnow & West Nelson Boatbuilders craft – Souvenir in Deep Water Cove.

CLASSIC WOODYS CRUISING THE HAURAKI GULF – SUMMER 2023/24

Now todays post is the one you have been waiting on – the classic wooden (mostly) craft that I spotted around the Hauraki Gulf over the Dec 27 > Jan 5th period.

Probably the best turn out of woodys that I have seen – seems it just wasn’t me suffering from cabin fever 🙂

As always some photos are good, some not so good – direction of sun and distance dictates that. Mostly I’m taking photos as a visual account.

Souvenir – Work-boat Wednesday

SOUVENIR – Work-boat Wednesday

Back in March 2020 whilst mooching around the Whangarei Town Basin one of the craft I photographed was he ex work-boat – Souvenir (my photo below).

Early this week Ant Smit was also walking the docks and sent in the above photos of Souvenir.

Can we learn more about this vessel – when I ask the question “does it move” I know I leave myself open for a side-swipe but every time I’m at the basin she is there.

Dean also forward comments from John Gander – “Souvenir was designed by Roger Carey for Erskin Neame a Blenheim fisherman, built in 1954 by Curnow and Wilton Nelson Boatbuilders. And powered with a 6L3 Gardner. For a number of years after launching Erskin with his crew Frank Derbyshire trawled out from the Wairau bar. She was later to be seen fishing out of many South Island ports.”

Chamberlains Bay Classic Launches  – Golden Hour

The truely talented boating photographers talk about the ‘golden hour’, the period just before sunset and just after dawn. Rarely in a bay is it an hour, sometimes it is 10>15 minutes before the sun disappears behind the hills or clouds.

On the Thursday before Easter, this average photographer (me) arrived in Chamberlains Bay, Ponui Island at just the right time and captured some special photos of the woody launches gathering for the Woody Classics Weekend cruise the next day up the Waihou River to Paeroa.
