Gay Dawn & Safari

Gay Dawn & Safari on the Tamaki River circa 1964/66. The two owners are having a chat during the winter overhaul on the “hard” (softish muddy little beach actually) which was actually between their houses. Safari is currently undergoing a ‘renovation’ by a CYA member.

Some additional info supplied by Ken Ricketts  – ” The 2 owners referred to were, my late father Ralph Ricketts on Gay Dawn & the late Karl Kasper on Safari on the little beach alongside & between their 2 houses — taken by me, from my parents property, & Kaspers property you can see right above & behind Safari, — great place for 2 boaties to live eh!! — Karl of course was part of the Kasper family that owned the “Pearl Kasper” the scow which he ran for many years”

Two of my favorite boat food photos, sent to me by CYA member Zach who is based on the Kaipara Harbour. Simple kiwi seafood, the BBQ’ed mussels are to die for & I can almost smell the hot smoked fish & mussels.

John Dory & her Lister engine

Built as a commercial fishing boat for coastal long lining the objective of the overall design and construction methods was to create a simple, cost effective and easy driven vessel. John Dory is also an outstanding sea boat and has demonstrated this ability on many occasions.

Her 27hp Lister Diesel is a good example of the type of machinery once used in small coastal fishing boats. John Dory is well maintained to a commercial standard. Howard Pascoe cruised the Coromandel and Northern Coastline up until his death in 2001.

23/09/2014 – The Lister is getting some love, including a new (out of the box) reduction box – love the bronze nuts.
