CLASSIC LAUNCH KOURA – Your Own Dockside Retreat

CLASSIC LAUNCH KOURA – Your Own Dockside Retreat

Todays woody story has a twist to it – while the launch KOURA is a genuine classic wooden boat her days afloat are over. Not by neglect or mishap – read on to hear her story and hopefully one of you might be the next custodian.

Back in October 2023 WW did a story on KOURA – below https://waitematawoodys.com/2023/10/02/koura-a-sunset-cocktail-cruiser/

At the time she had been transformed into a land based ‘man-cave’. Her new ownershad bought Koura to enable Chris Devereaux  – a passionate boatie – to enjoy owning a vessel again despite being confined to a wheelchair. The family had many happy cocktail hours aboard her and their grand children had fun sleeping aboard and playing captains and pirates  in the holidays. Restoring and creating the KOURA  as she is today gave Chris a purpose and much joy.

Sadly Chris succumbed to his auto immune disease in late May and now partner Barbara Harris is selling their Whangarei property and KOURA needs a new home.

So woodys – if any of you are interested in buying her  and continuing her story Barbara would love to chat. Whilst KOURA would be very cool as a ‘man cave’ , there must be a grandad out there with some spare land that he could install KOURA on. Me thinks that overnight you would become #1 grand parent.

If you or someone you know has room in their life for KOURA – initially contact Barbara at  Bjaneharris1@gmail.com

CLASSIC WOODEN EX WORKBOAT – BOLD DREAMS, DEEP POCKETS

CLASSIC WOODEN EX WORKBOAT – AORANGI BOLD DREAMS, DEEP POCKETS

Todays story is targeting any potential workboat conversion enthusiasts , the 60’, 1949 Shipbuilders built ex workboat – AORANGI is a project waiting to happen. Wonderful lines as seen in the b/w photo below and the bonus is down below there are two 180hp Gardner 6LXB engines – condition to be advised ex seller.

In answer to the “where would I keep her” question – there is a Tauranga mooring available at $70 a week.

We learnt a little about her in a May 2016 WW story – https://waitematawoodys.com/2016/05/10/aorangi/

Last time I look at the bidding, it sat at $619 and the reserve had been met. Thanks Ian McDonald for the tme heads up.

CLASSIC BAILEY & LOWE LAUNCH NEEDS A NEW HOME

CLASSIC BAILEY & LOWE LAUNCH NEEDS A NEW HOME

Todays story is two things a look at the 1909 wooden launch SUNBEAM  and call from her owner Susan Insley asking for someone to step up and take over the custodianship of SUNBEAM.

Firstly some background – THE 32′ SUNBEAM was built in 1909 by Bailey & Lowe and constructed from kauri carvel planking.  Susan’s great grandfather, Harry Insley, was the police officer on Waiheke Island between 1908 and 1928, and used his launch SUNBEAM for work purposes making her the first Police craft in Auckland.. In the b/w press clipping dated 14th Nov 1992 we see SUNBEM lining up with the craft that later replaced her as Auckland Maritime Police vessels.

These days SUNBEAM is moored in the Marlborough Sounds and in good working order, but sadly in recent times just not getting the use she deserves / needs. So Susan has made the tough call to find a new owner and has commented to WW that if someone with the right amount of salt in their veins was to step up, the vessel could be a gift. If that person is you or you know someone – initially contact Susan at sueins@xtra.co.nz

CLASSIC WOODEN MOTOR SAILER – SPINDRIFT

CLASSIC WOODEN MOTOR SAILER – SPINDRIFT

Today’s featured vessel is the rather salty-looking SPINDRIFT – a 27’ classic double-ended motorsailer that recently surfaced on tme (cheers Ian McDonald for the heads-up).

Unfortunately, the listing doesn’t give much away. We’re told she’s built to a design known as a “Scottish Fifer” and has a kauri hull, so it’s likely she was built here in New Zealand. Power comes from an 18hp Saab engine.

And that’s about it.

The seller does mention there’s a “full history from when built, with photos” – which would be a great addition to the listing. Always curious how some people seem to make it harder to sell a boat…

If anyone out there knows more about SPINDRIFT, drop us a line in the WW comments section. She’s currently located in Tauranga.

CLASSIC SAM FORD LAUNCH – OSCAR – A Peek Down Below

CLASSIC SAM FORD LAUNCH – OSCAR – A Peek Down Below

Todays post revisits the 34′ classic launch OSCAR, built by Sam Ford in 1970 and still powered by her original 165hp Perkins diesel engine, which delivers a top speed of 12 knots.

While OSCAR has been featured on waitematawoodys before—most notably in April 2024 (link below) —this update shares some new photos from below deck, thanks to a tme listing tip-off from Ian McDonald. https://waitematawoodys.com/2024/04/10/oscar-born-again/

CLASSIC SHIPBUILDERS WOODEN LAUNCH – MAJEIKA

CLASSIC SHIPBUILDERS WOODEN LAUNCH – MAJEIKA

During the week I was visiting the OBC marine centre on Auckland’s Tamaki Drive scoping out an upcoming woody event and spotted the launch – MAJEIKA on a mooring in Whakatakata Bay. A quick WW search popped up that she appeared on WW back in May 2022, link below  https://waitematawoodys.com/2022/05/07/majeika/

As sometimes happens way to often at the same time Ian McDonald pointed out that she was also on tme.

So a quick summary of what we know – MAJEIKA is a 28’ Shipbuilders design, most likely a ‘kit’ boat, built c.1960, builder unknown. Triple skin kauri which will make for a very robust woody.

Forward motion is via a 100hp Nissan diesel engine. In the 2022 WW story the engine was said to be a LD28 rated at 88hp, and a top speed of 12 knots. Also the length was 26’ then – so it seems she has been eating a few pies.

With an asking price of $10k, we see another example of it being a buyers market at the moment.

CLASSIC 1926 WOODEN LAUNCH – LA ROSA – 4sale

CLASSIC 1926 WOODEN LAUNCH – LA ROSA

The question of the day – is LA ROSA the best priced classic wooden launch currently on the market, at $8k . Yeap that isn’t a typo -the asking price is $8,000 ono. Now I haven’t been on board in a long time but as the architects say the bones are there of a fine looking classic. It could either be used as is or brought back to finery that she has been in the past. At 40’ that a lot of boat for the money.

Built in 1926 by Ernie Harvey , and rebuilt totally in 1965 and had a overhauled Lister JP3 (electric start) installed approx 15 years ago.

Todays WW photos are a mix from her past and recent – the last one show casing her in her finest. Her tme listing (thanks Ian McDonald) states the sale is due to poor health and the price is for a quick sale – if your interested get on tme asap , it won’t last long at the price. BUT – spend the money on an out of water survey, it will be the best investment you make – you will either end up with a good To Do List for the future OR saved yourself from having to mortgage the home 🙂

IT’S A BUYERS MARKET – CLASSIC LAUNCH OKE BAY (DIANA S)

IT’S A BUYERS MARKET – CLASSIC LAUNCH OKE BAY (DIANA S)

If your selling your classic wooden craft this winter do not set your hopes to high in terms of price.

There are some amazing buys floating around, mainly on tme, todays woody is an example. $15k ono is just silly money for OKE BAY.

Then again so is sub $300k for the majestic woody TRINIDAD , she was the buy of the decade.

The 32’ OKE BAY was built / launched in 1945 by Roy Steadman of Herne Bay, Auckland. At the time of launching she was named DIANA S, her name was changed in 1956. Her hull is carvel construction with kauri planks.

Forward motion is from a Ford Lees 2701 64hp diesel engine giving her a cruising speed of 7 knots.

With some TLC someone will have a nice, very original woody for summer cruising. Thanks to Ian McDonald for the tme heads up.

CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH – GLENARAY

CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH – GLENARAY

The 39’ 1942 Shipbuilders built launch – GLENARAY has appeared twice on WW but more times on tme – 2018 / 2021 / 2023 / 2025.

Links below to the WW stories:

WW May 2018 https://waitematawoodys.com/2018/05/01/glenaray/

WW Aug 2021 https://waitematawoodys.com/2021/08/01/glenaray-2/

Compared to the 2018 photos her recent appearance on tme shows an interior fit out that has ‘drifted away’ from the tradition configuration. From what we can see and at the asking price she may be a bargain + with her power set uo,  might also suit a buyer looking for a live-aboard.

Forward motion is via a 180hp 6cyl. Ford diesel.

We know she was built for WWII inner harbour mine patrol use, but never saw service – do we know any of her past, post war and up to 2018. Photo below ex Ken Ricketts dated 1958, when owned by Vince Norton.
