LUCINDA RE-LAUNCHED

Well woodys, after nearly two & half years hauled out at the Milford Cruising Club slip, on Saturday afternoon, Nathan Herbert re-launched his 1930, 28′ L. Coulthard launch – Lucinda. A group of approx. 40 family & friends came together to celebrate the event & help ease Luci back into the creek.

A few cold beverages, some bubbles & a good old fashioned kiwi spread – sausage rolls, asparagus bread wraps, bacon & egg pie & a cake – doesn’t get much better my eyes.
In the above photos, you’ll see lots of Nathan sporting a PS (permanent smile) & rightly so, it was after, his day. I apologize for the background noise in the videos, the wind was howling at the time. Remember if you click on the photos, they enlarge 😉

While mooching around the creek I spotted something that I thought I would never see – the ex whale chaser, Rorqual sans her hot-house top, see photo below. It is only temporary as new owner Andrew Miller is half way through a make over that will see her returned to a similar look as before but utilizing the best materials & systems. And if I did not post a photo of Murray Deeble’s wee day boat I would have ended up in the creek 🙂

Now I do not like to make fun of someone else’s misfortune but the above & below photos ex the Auckland Museum, Tudor Collins collection & emailed to me by Ken Ricketts was taken a long time ago – so woodys today we will have a little competition –  I’ll give a waitematawoodys tote bag (see below) to the woody that comes up with the best caption 🙂

The photo file gave the location as Gart Island, but that draws a blank with me – can anyone help here, the vessel is listed as being ‘Jewack‘. Since ID’ed as Mirella .

Entries close 12pm 19-08-2016. You can enter as many times as you like, the judge will be Nathan Herbert – why? because he already has a ww tote bag 😉

VALUABLE AUCKLAND FISHING LAUNCH SUNK AFTER STRIKING A SUBMERGED ROCK. Owned by Mr. J. Wilson, of Auckland, this 32ft. launch Mirella sank afte% striking a rock off Goat Island, near Cape Rodney, on Tuesday evening. The three members of the crew made their escape in the dinghy. Little hope of salvaging the craft is entertained.

The family of the late Max Carter invite Max’s friends, past employees and Carter design admirers to a memorial service to celebrate Max’s life and achievements, details below.

It would a nice gesture to have one of Max’s designs or builds (modern or classic) on the dock outside the squadron. If someone is able to help with a boat, please contact Max’s long time friend, Tony Barclay on 022 1079689 .

1947 Squadron Weekend at Kawau

The above photo appeared in the 19th Feb, 1947 issue of the ‘Weekly News’ (ex Mac Taylor collection) & shows the RNZYS fleet at anchor in Mansion House Bay, Kawau Island for the annual squadron weekend at Kawau, which continues to this day. Its a very impressive line up of classic’s that includes most of todays premier classic woodys.

Weather Bomb Hits Whangateau Boat Yard

Early Saturday morning, a weather bomb hit the Whangateau boat yard & the 1926 classic launch Nereides, moored there for some seasonal maintenance,  has been damaged. I’ll let the words & photos on the yards facebook page, link below, tell the story.

Update- seems the internet fairies are playing games & the ability to view the facebook link is missing, so sorry folks – no link.

Nereides owner, Mark, is a good bloke & doesn’t deserve this (again) but Nereides is probably in the best spot possible for the repairs, the work that Pam & George are doing at the yard on a collection of our classic’s is 2nd to none.

Mark – if you need a hand, just ask 🙂

A pictorial history of New Zealand’s mighty P Class yacht

Whilst trolling around the Wellington Classic Yacht Trust facebook page I uncovered the above gem that utilizes the two formats of a slide show and video clips to showcase the history New Zealand’s mighty P-Class featuring images and footage from the 1920s to 2013.
The clip has been assembled by P Class expert and historian Gun Caundle, from photos collected while researching for his book ‘Our Secret Weapon’, a history and stories about the P Class. While 15 minutes long its great viewing & I’m sure most woodys will bothe relate to it & probably recognize some of the people featured. Enjoy 🙂

Saturday saw the CYA host a visit to Greg Salthouse’s Greenhite boat yard, members had the choice of arriving by water or road. Given the deep water anchorage at the wharf it was ideal for some of the yachting members to join in. Fiona Driver & Rod Marler buddied up with Barb & David Cooke to provide a BBQ lunch that disappeared very quickly 🙂
Greg S gave the attendees an intro to the yard & the work that was being undertaken & then thru the yard open to members to explore at their leisure.
Salthouse is one of the few remaining classic wooden boat friendly ‘railway’ haul-out slips in the Auckland area, so folks to quote that old saying – use it or lose it 😉

And on Sunday, while most of you rested I spent the day picking olives at a friends Ti Point property. Bumper crop this year made the day fly by, helped by a longish yum lunch featuring local produce & wines. If we got bored the view was pretty wow.

Hard to believe sometimes that we are such a young country & as proof look at the above photo from January 1864, which shows the Queen Street Wharf. The view today is very different, the angle is from Smales Point at the foot of Hobson St. The occasion was the Auckland Anniversary Regatta, you can see Fort Britomart at the extreme right.

Personally I was doing a double take looking over at Devonport & the ‘humps’ of Mt Victoria & ‘North Head’ did not look right, with a 3rd hump visible in the middle. Then I remember that what today is called Mt.Cambria reserve was once in the middle & was quarried for scoria & thus disappeared 😦

I have another copy of Roberts book up for grabs, so the first woody that can supply the boat name, designer, builder, year & photo location for the above launch will win a copy of Robert’s just released book ‘ Beautiful Boats’. The first reply in the ww comments section with all 5 answers correct – wins. This will be the 3rd of the four copies of the book I have to give away. Previous winners were  – Bruce Tantrum & Martin Howson.

Some Background On The Book

Robert has been collecting classic yacht designs for over 50 years, amongst his collection is work from our most talented & recognized designers – Arch Logan, Chas Bailey, Charlie & Alex Collings, Colin Wild, Bert Woolacott, Bob Stewart, Des Townson, Alan Wright & Robert’s father – John Brooke.
From his collection Robert has chosen 50 & redrawn each design, tracing off the original drawings to present them in a similar format. To add to the wow factor, Robert used the drawing equipment & ships curves that were once used by either Arch Logan, Charlie & Alex Collings or his father.

The 105 page, A4 size book allocates 2 pages to each vessel with specs & photo/s on the left & the drawings – hull lines, profile, half breadths, sections, diagonals & sail plan on the right hand page (refer Rainbow drawing example below). Its a must have in all serious woodys library.

Robert has very generously donated 4 copies of the book to waitematawoodys so over the next few weeks I will be giving them away as prizes. In addition I also have a framed 380 x 300 rendered copy of one of the Beautiful Boats. I have not decided yet how this will be ‘won’, details soon.

There are thousands of ww followers out there so do not get your hopes up on winning a copy 🙂 I would suggest you visit Boat Books at 22 Westhaven Drive, Westhaven, Auckland & grab a copy for yourself, cost is $60.  A little bonus today – if you can put up with the corny accent – this video of the Lake Tahoe Concours D’Elegance 2015 show features some amazing classic powerboats – the favorite for me being Henry Ford’s 1923 33′ Hacker Craft that was named ‘Evangeline’ after his girlfriend 😉 She is powered by a WW1 V12 Liberty aircraft engine.
