Mistletoe 228 – Sailing Sunday

When I first saw the above two photos from the Tudor Collins Auckland Museum collection I had a chuckle, there has to be a story behind these photos. Venue most likely is Great Barrier Island. Photos emailed to me by Ken Ricketts.

Do we know any more about her?

Photos below ex Dean Wright of Mistletoe at Whangaroa Marina 2007. Nice to see she survived 🙂

25-10-2016 Update ex Alice Morrison

I recall seeing a very similar vessel called ‘Mistletoe’ in Houhora on 11 February 2016 (picture below). I wonder if she is Mistletoe I or Mistletoe II?

A Couple of Mulletties – Sailing Sunday

A Couple of Mulletties – Sailing Sunday

The 2 photos above were sent in by Kevin Cassidy (Mulletty Mick) via Gill Bouzaid. The top one is of Bob Ewing’s Buona Sera in the 1969 Lipton Cup & lower photo is of Ron Copeland’s Taotane at Russell, New Years Day 1968.

In the comments section of ww yesterday, June Kendall was asking what became of her fathers mulletty – Celox, which he co-owned in the 1920’s >30’s. It was reported on ww that back in Feb 2015 she had sunk in the Bay of Islands & while salvaged her owner was offering her ‘free to a good home’ – June   was wondering what became of the yacht & if the she was still in Opua? So woodys – can anyone help out with an update?

AK2177 – Sailing Sunday

The first photo above is one of my favorites, its from the Tudor Collins Auckland Museum collection & the location is possible Russell in the Bay of Islands. Emailed to me by Ken Ricketts.
Can we put a name to her & possibly some history ?

Remember the Classic Yacht & Launch Exhibition is on today – details below.

Harold Kidd Input

It would be good to get the place established and we could work back from that by matching known boats in the vicinity. The time period is 1928-1935 when registered fishing boats were issued with four figure numbers. I haven’t been able to find out why this occurred but it lasted only until c1935 when all boats were renumbered starting from (probably) 1 in each port.
All the registers have disappeared bar a couple, Mangonui (MGN) is the only one I’ve been able to get at the National Archives. Most were burnt in a Wellington archive fire. A pity because they contained an enormous amount of info on each boat and owner.
So you have to painstakingly build up a new register from evidence such as this. Tudor Collins probably photographed this scene for a newspaper where it may appear with a caption such as “the opening of the duck shooting season in the Far North”.
The boat is clearly a 24ft mullet boat of the working type,; it is important to find out her name to fill another blank in the fishing boat register.
Any clues out there?

p.s. the boat’s number is AK2177, an Auckland registration, which rather rules out a Far North site. Maybe just off George and Pam’s yard and workshop at Whangateau? That was Collins’ home patch anyway.

p.p.s. Pam Cundy has asked around the Leigh/Matakana area and the consensus is that it’s Whangateau all right. A strong possibility is that the mullet boat is IDAHO owned by Huru Ashton, according to his nephew W. Finnigan-Douglas. IDAHO was altered by Harvey & Lang in 1914 so there’s a strong chance they built her.

SHIRALEE E64 – Sailing Sunday

Todays photos are from Sian Perrott the daughter of Roy Kendall & show the launch & sailing of his back yard built 28′ E class keeler, Shiralee.

I know nothing about the design or what happened to her i.e. is she still around?

Robin Elliott Input

Shiralee was built from a Gerry Breekveldt design featured in Sea Spray in May 1955.

Took NZYF number 464 in 1969.

Known owners: Roy Kendall 1958/67+?; R. Haysom 1965+? C.R. Kendall 1970?/71+? (Still Registered as Owner NZYF 1999);
Currently unregistered and no any clues to her whereabouts.

Registered dimensions in 1958 28’x 22’8″x 7’4″x 4’2″, 380 sqft, 1.5tons outside, 28hp

The small yacht in the group of 4 pix is the M-class Morere M-32 designed and built by Roly Moreland.  Roy Kendall bought Morere off John Morrison in 1963 and (his sons?) raced her for the 1963/64 season.

AH – photo added of M32

Harold Kidd Input – Confirm Breekveldt design. She was rebuilt by Don Roberts and renamed JUMEIRAH. Steve Cranch knows all about her. Roberts owned her still in Auckland in 2012 still with sail number 464.

The Mullet Boat – Buona Sera

The Mullet Boat – Buona Sera

Chris McMullen sent me the link to this cool little youtube movie on the mullet boat – Buona Sera.

Chris commented that there is a slight oops in the commentary in regard to his involvement in the build – Eric had the boat half built before Chris met him 🙂
Chris believes Eric used the moulds received from Morrie Palmer who had just built the first cold moulded diagonally planked mullet Boat. He called it Controversy as that what it caused. He was barred from racing her for a time!
Buona Sera was the second diagonally planked boat. Chris’s Tamatea L-10 (featured already on ww) was the last boat built using carvel construction.
Enjoy the movie.

On the topic of mullet boats – this years Classic Yacht & Launch Exhibition at the Karanga Plaza (in front of Viaduct Events Centre) celebrates THE MULLET BOAT’s. As always with the Tino Rawa events it will be a not to be missed classic wooden boating event. So put a circle in the diary for the weekend of October 8>9th, 10.00am > 4.00pm. More details closer to the event 😉

Mystery Launch & A Few Yachts

I’m hoping that I have not published this photo before, its from the Mac Taylor collection. Interested in ID’ing the launch.

Sorry for a rather lame post today but I’m laid low with the man flu, feeling very average, in fact didn’t even watch the All Blacks test last night.

OSTKUST – Sailing Sunday

Ostkust (means East Cape in Norwegian) was built by Colin Brown & his twin brother Stan, to an American Al Mason design, she measured 24′ LOA.

She was originally powered by a 3 hp 1 cyl., Yanmar diesel & the Brown’s built her almost entirely in the traditional single skin, ribbed copper nailed, red lead concept, with only the smallest bit  of glued work in her.The brothers started her when they were 15 years old in 1965, when Colin was a new apprentice boatbuilder & launched her when they were 17. They kept her for 15 years.

The Brown’s don’t recall who she was sold to, but she disappeared until she popped up at Pine Harbour, where Colin Brown saw her one day in 2000. She then disappeared again until 2009, when Colin had a call from the person Colin believed is probably still the present owner, an American, living in the Bay of Islands.
Colin is in fact correct – the American being Bill Sellers  who’s lived in NZ for many years & is  presently living aboard at Orongo Bay BO.I. Ostkust has had a name change to Ludique & been lengthened her to 28′. Photos & details ex Colin Brown, emailed to me by Ken Ricketts.

Lots of details & photos of other Ostkust’s here http://forum.woodenboat.com/showthread.php?117266-The-Ostkust-Thread

12-09-2016 photos below of the vessel currently moored in the Bay of Islands. Taken by John Grant, emailed in by Ken Ricketts

Markson > Pacific Sunrise > Last Vintage

Markson > Pacific Sunrise > Last Vintage
I have been contacted by Samuel Wayne who has been working under a shipwright in Tasmania. They recently did many months work on the 110 ft ‘Last Vintage’ which has been renamed twice; originally it was ‘Markson’ & before that ‘Pacific Sunrise’. The reason Sam emailed ww was because this ship was purchased by the New Zealand Government and refitted circa the year ~2000 & Sam was wondering if ww knew any information as to where and who did the work.
While working on Last Vintage they replaced some planks, refastened the hull and rebuilt the rear living area / saloon walls (frame + exterior) to provide solid anchor points for the mizzen mast.
More information on the work done and many photos can be found at lastvintage.com.
Sam will be flying in to Auckland next week and driving around the northern island with his girlfriend and would appreciate the chance to look around and meet some of the people doing similar work on wooden boats or people that worked on the ‘Last Vintage’  while he is in the country. New Golden Hind at Kawau Island – Sailing Sunday

Today’s photo is another from the Auckland Museum’s Tudor Collins collection, this one emailed to me by Ken Ricketts. It shows the ‘New Golden Hind’, designed by Chas. Bailey Jr. & built at the Deemings Opua yard. She is  anchored off Mansion House Bay, Kawau Island c.1940’s.

Any one able to ID the launches?
You can see more photos & details on her here   https://waitematawoodys.com/2016/06/22/new-golden-hind/
