1964 Bay of Islands Mystery Event

1964 Bay of Islands Mystery Event

The above photo is captioned – 1964, Ohio Bay, Rangihoua, Bay of Islands and comes to us via Lew Redwood’s fb.
There is an impressive collection of classic wooden motor-boats in the bay and quite a crowd assembled on the beach / sand dunes watching something to the right (out of screen). Interesting that in the middle of the bay is a commercial boat with passenger looking ashore.
So woodys two tasks today – what’s happening and can we name some of the Woodys?
Oracle Nathan Herbert reckons he can ID most of the launches so lets see how good the rest of us (combined) are 🙂
Input from Simon SmithIn 1814 S Marsden held the first Christian service in NZ here. Thus 1964 would be the 150th celebration of that event. I suggest the photo represents the celebration of that first christmas sermon.

17-07-2019 Update / Input from Graham Clifford:

“The day before the 1964 commemoration event which recalled Reverend Samual Marsden’s Christmas Day service in 1814, I assisted Norman Fuller in running a wooden barge ashore on the beach towards the eastern end, just out of picture to the left. This barge was to facilitate getting passengers ashore who had made the trip on various Fullers launches from Paihia. A wooden ramp was lowered to the beach and used as an accessway. I made three return trips from Paihia as skipper of Miss Ida, carrying about 40 people per trip in perfect weather.

In identifying the boats in the photo I can name only three : ‘Bay Belle’ – a Fullers boat – and ‘Penguin’ whose home was at Purerua, an inlet within Mangonui Inlet which runs north as far as Te Tii. The people in the dinghy are rowing out to Penguin and we could surmise that two of them would be owner George Hansen and his wife whom he always called “Mum” when radioing her when he was out gamefishing.

The boat which another correspondent suggested is Fuller’s Miss Brett, I would put down as Miss Russell. The two boats were very similar but Miss Brett just had the edge in looks. I skippered both in the 60s, more so Miss Brett including for gamefishing and many line fishing trips with the Italians who were building the oil refinery at Marsden Point.
1964 was the second year of my 42 years as a Fuller’s skipper.”

11-08-2019 Input for Hylton Edmonds
“As promised – photo and story scanned and attached taken from the December 30 1964 issue of the Weekly News of Christmas Day commemoration activities at Oihi Bay.
Fuller’s Kewpie and Knoxie IV (?) in attendance complete with one of their barges acting as a landing platform, and maybe Bay Belle in your photo was awaiting its turn?
Graham (Clifford) might be able to elaborate and confirm, seeing he was there with the Ida as well.
Being too young, my Mother “dragged” my older brother and sister over there, whilst the Old Man and I stayed at home and played with all their presents, hah,  – all things considered,  a great day.”

JOHN STREET ON FILM – a waitematawoodys exclusive
IMG_1662
Starting on Monday in addition to the daily woody story I will run each day a video from John Street’s recent speaking engagement that supported the exhibition – ‘One Man’s Treasures’ at the New Zealand Maritime Museum. For the overseas readers, John Street was at the helm for over half a century of Auckland’s historic ship chandlery – Fosters. Such was John’s influence on the New Zealand boating and marine scene, that the late Sir Peter Blake tagged John the ‘Waterfront Mafia’. These days John has a mighty passion for preserving New Zealand’s maritime heritage.  :
MONDAY –         Fosters The Beginning
TUESDAY –        History of The Breeze
WEDNESDAY – The schooner Daring
THURSDAY –     Amercias Cup
FRIDAY –            The steam crane ship Rapaki
SATURDAY –      Tug Boat Racing on the Waitemata

Kaipara Barn Find

Another woody spotted by Jason Prew last weekend.

We know nothing – can a WCW (West Coast Woody) tell us more about her?
RIP Tom Nesbitt
Noticed in the NZ Herald that Tom Nesbitt – WW’s first and only banned person has passed over the bar – we had some interesting banter…..

BEACHED MYSTERY WOODEN LAUNCH

I’m not sure how the above launch ended up in this situation and I’m hesitant to name the location as not everyone that reads this site is above a ‘souvenir’ trip. Let’s just say its down Clevedon way.
The absence of floor boards would lead one to think that she has joined the submariners club i.e. been submerged.
The ‘anchor’ I’m assuming has been put out by someone trying to secure the vessel in its present location. Thanks to T Foh for sending in the photos.
Anyone able to ID the boat and tell us where she may have come from?
Could be a project for ’Tom The Torch’ 😉

Hawkes Bay Mystery Motorsailer

Todays photos come to us fro Lew Redwood’s fb, the name of the yacht is unknown, but we know it was owned by J.A. Louis Hay.
Again the location is also unknown, but the photo is tagged MTG Hawkes Bay which is – Museum Theatre Gallery, Napier – so that might be a big help ID’ing the location.
Interesting ‘funnel’ , I assume for a solid fuel stove. And speaking of wood stoves on boats (my dream) Mondays WW story ticks a lot of my boxes – wood stove + a Ford Model T wheel / helm.
Harold Kidd Input – I’ve scratched my head over this one before. J A Louis Hay was a well-known Napier Architect and amateur musician. Just a guess, he designed he boat himself and had it built locally at Westshore by R. Farquhar, very possibly the unnamed one he built in September 1915 before Hay went overseas to France, She was 26’6″x6′ with a 4hp Monarch. The “funnel” is probably a dry exhaust.

I’m a big fan of the UK website Classic Sailor, it started out as a magazine, published by a past editor of Classic Boat magazine, but then after a few issues, went to a weblog format. They have some great articleds- check out this one on the restoration of the yawl – Wayward – see link below.

Classic Wooden Boat Project

It’s been the week of project boats – for some reason they just keep popping up, thanks to Ian McDonald for the trade me heads up.

Today’s woody was built c.1930, carvel planked kauri and 26’ in length. She has a Nissan TD23 diesels engine, not sure of the condition. The listing says the hull is in good condition – but its a bit hard to tell, that grey undercoat is a bit like black stockings e.g. hides a magnitude of sins 😉

Currently hauled out in Kerikeri, Northland.

Keen to learn more about this woody – name?, designer / builder? – anyone able to help out?

Auckland Anniversary 1919 Regatta

Auckland Anniversary Regatta 1919

Todays photo is a gallery of photos from the 1919 Auckland Anniversary Regatta (Jan 29th) . A great collection, including the Walsh Brothers (Mission Bay) flying boats – what interests me is the two launches, centre left and right. Both look like they have a good turn of speed.
Can anyone ID them for us?
Photos appeared in the Feb 6th 1919 issue of the ‘Weekly News’ and come to us via Keith Humphreys fb
.
Harold Kidd Input – Nathan Herbert was right when he commented about the right hand launch, she’s the Lane DEFENDER, formerly SCRIPPS III, now with a dodger over the cockpit. The left hand launch is clearly Bailey & Lowe and I’m sure is WINSOME (I) although I can’t figure out her racing number. She’s too small for MANU.

MYSTERY LAUNCH – MANUKAU HARBOUR

The above photos come to us via Lew Redwood’s fb and the caption reads “1920’s Bill Foots launch, Manukau Harbour”
I’m sure one of the woodys will be able to tell us who Bill Foot was and hopefully some details on his launch.
Check out WW tomorrow, a rather nice entry level woody has just come on the market, a perfect boat to enjoy the world of classic woody ownership 🙂

MYSTERY LAUNCH – Waiheke Island

Today’s woody is a newbie to me, the caption reads “All hands on deck – As we enters the channel to our secret bay near our campsite on Waiheke Island”
Looking at the photo I would say the location is Garden Cove, refer photos below
Can anyone ID the vessel & confirm the location?

Mystery Whangaroa Launches

WHANGAROA MYSTERY LAUNCHES

The above 1962 photo comes to us from Lew Redwood’s fb and shows several Woodys at anchor. The bridge decker in the centre looks familiar but I can not put a name to her, I’m sure Nathan Herbert will be able to ID her.
The smaller launch on the right  looks quick even at anchor – any ideas on her?
COOL REFERENCE TOOL
I was recently sent the link below by Australian woody – Andrew Christie. Its a register of Australian and New Zealand builders plates, a little light on kiwi content but its a start – worth a look.

Double End Clinker Launch

Screen Shot 2019-05-28 at 12.43.58 PM

Double End Clinker Launch

The above 21’ ex crayfishing clinker launch recently popped up on trademe (thanks Ian McDonald). Her age is little deceptive, she was in fact built in 1980 and is for sale by boat builder Robert Priest, who built the current cabin and installed the 18hp Yanmar diesel, thats pushes her along at a comfortable 6 knots. Robert has owned her for 35 years.
Her listing states that she is very well built and currently berth at Mana Marina, Wellington. Comes with what’s described as a beach trailer.

She looks a very salty craft and would be perfect to someone with a bach looking for safe, reliable transport and a spot of fishing. Anyone able to put a name to the vessel and who might have built her?

Looking For Info On Kiw Boat Builder – Rex Wright

Kaipara based woody – Greg Schultz is trying to track down info on a kiwi boatbuilder. He doesn’t have much to go by except the name Rex Wright and that he worked in Auckland post WW1, before moving to Cairns where he was reasonably well know around the yards.

Rex was born in 1888 and died in 1990. Can anyone help Greg with info on Rex’s past e.g. where he worked, the vessels he built etc?
