THE CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH JULIA – HOW DID SHE END UP HERE

Back in May  2017 one of the roving woody crew, Ross Dawson, reported in on the classic wooden double-end launch – JULIA. Ross spotted JULIA berthed at Nelson Marina (first 3 photos above) 

Fast forward to Jan 2018 and John Burland reported that she was still berthed in Nelson.

Then in December 2022 Bay of Islands woody, Dean Wright snapped a photo of JULIA in Havelock Marina.

Sadly each time we were unable to learn anymore details on the vessel.

Then mid-week I get an email from Alistair Rowe reporting that while on a walk he spotted JULIA looking very sad lying in a bit of wasteland behind Sanford’s mussel processing plant at Havelock.

Hopefully this isn’t the end of the road for JULIA- can anyone enlighten us on the vessel and how she ended up in this sad state.

Probably The Best Classic Cruising Story Ever

Over the last 2+ years I have religiously followed a YouTube series put out by Madison Boatworks. Sounds very corporate but its the total opposite – a youngish couple named Jonathan & Whitney who refurbished a 1960 37’5” (on deck) ‘Ingrid’ ketch designed by William Atkin named Julia. After 4 years of working on the boat they left Seattle, Washington, USA and pointed the bow towards Mexico. After this the big call was made and they were off to the Pacific. There are 21 videos in the series that have clocked up over six million views and each one is gold. 

The cinematography and narrative is just outstanding. Jonathan is a wonderful storyteller and one follower commented that his voice is semi tranquillising – it is, the man should do sleep videos 🙂

Classic Wooden Boats At Havelock Marina

Back in late October 2022 Dean Wright was in Blenheim attending John Gander’s significant birthday, all birthdays are significant but the ones with ‘0’s’ in them are more significant.

While down south Dean did some marina mooching and todays photo gallery comes to us from the Havelock marina. Nice to see a couple of our bigger northern woodys now safely tucked way down south – Turongo and Durville. Sad to lose them from the Waitemata but if we were keeping score I think we win more than we lose 🙂

A lot of craft unknown to WW and will probably morph into WW stories in their own right. As always click on photos to enlarge.

PEGGY BAWN – 1894 G.L. Watson Cutter

Today thanks to the UK site ‘My Classic Boat and Bob Aylott we get to have a peek at one of the best classic yachts ever – Peggy Dawn, her owner Hal Sisk shows us around his beautiful 1894 G.L. Watson 36ft Cutter. Filmed in Cowes and The Solent on a day with not a lot of wind.

Hal Sisk also gives us a great insight into the genius of designer G.L.Watson.

Mooching Around Nelson Marina

A friend of mine, John Burland was recently mooching around the marina at Nelson & snapped the photos above.

Great to see that Lady Karita’s make-over is coming along nicely – I expect nothing less of Murray Shaw

Back in May 2017, I was sent some photos of Julia from Ross Dawson, the story did not un-earth any more info on the vessel, hopefully John B’s photo above will.

Today’s story features another boat that caught Ross Dawson’s eye.  All we know about the double ender Julia is that she calls Nelson Marina home.

It would appear that Ross has a ‘thing’ for a nicely constructed ‘rear end i.e. a double ender. Ross commented that there is much published information about them…both pros & cons, but aside from all that, he just thinks they look good, further proof is his ketch Delight, which yes, it has a pointy stern 🙂
