Another drawing from Robert Brooke done by his father, Jack Brooke, again ww thanks Robert for making them available to ww followers. Jack produced a hand drawing on each cruise. Todays post is the 10th featured – again the detail is amazing.

The above drawing records the travels of Kiariki during the Xmas 1959/60 cruise to Kawau Island > Gt Barrier Island >back to  Kawau > Mahurangi.

Crew: John Brooke, Elsie Brooke, Judith Brooke, Robert Brooke, Gail Hall & Ross Duder. On the Kawau leg – Max & Bobby Walker. On the Mahurangi leg – Nick & Tim Gurr.

Kamalii – Sailing Sunday

Mooching around Waiheke Island over Labour Weekend 2014, I went for an early morning row & spotted Kamalii anchored in Onetangi. Quite a sight in the early morning (sun rise) light. Anyone able to supply some more info on this rather nice yacht?

The above drawing records the travels of Kiariki during the Xmas 1964/65 cruise to Gt Barrier Island, Te Kouma & Waiheke Island.

details & photos from Nathan Herbert, Papers Past & trademe
The trade me listing (photos below) states that this 26’ 6”, 8’ beam motorboat was designed / built in 1933 by Arnold Couldrey in Northcote.
Nathan Herbert has been sniffing around Papers Past & has uncovered that Linden was launched as ‘Eileen Patricia for a Mr W Naismith of Maraetai. In the b/w photos above she is undergoing her sea trials, in one the yacht alongside is the C-Class keeler, Mangawai, owned by G.B. Hogan of Devonport.

Powered by a rebuilt 55hp Fordson Major motor, she cruises at 8 knot & burns a gallon of diesel an hour.
Needs a couple of little jobs doing but not much as the current owner has done routine maintenance over the last 6 years.
The asking price is $7,500, thats not a lot of money for an entry level classic motorboat.
In my view as launched she is a very pretty small launch – hopefully someone will grab her & convert her back to ‘as launched’. Would make a great Lake Rotoiti boat 🙂

She has been bought by a CYA member (Peter Mence) & Peter tells me will be returned to her original configuration 🙂

Peter owns the rather smart K-Class yacht Jenanne & joins the ever increasing group of classic yachties that now own a classic motor launch. Welcome Peter to the ‘light-side’ 🙂

I know I’m bad for posting the above photo taken by Luis Rodriguez of 12M Vanity V from the Royal Danish Yacht Club, seen here at the Puig 12m world champs in Barcelona. But you would have to agree that there would be no problems motivating the crew to put the kite up 🙂

The above drawing records the travels of Kiariki during a May 1959 cruise to Kawau Island & onto Gt Barrier Island.

Crew: John Brooke, Don Brooke, Bill Mitch, John Chapple, Peter Walker, Rob Wallace. Must have been a boys cruise.

MATAHUI

Lindsay Aitcheson, the new owner of the motor-sailor Matahui would like some input from the collective brains of ww followers.

It is Lindsay’s understanding that Matahui was designed by Athol Burns & launched into the Waiwartu  Stream in Wellington in 1955 (refer above photo ex Turnbull Library). Lindsay understands she was built as a fishing boat to long-line in Cook Strait. The builder is unknown but ‘could’ be Frank Dellabarca as he built several Athol Burns designed fishing boats e.g. MV Cristina (featured previously on ww).

Anyone able to shed some light on Matahui & her past??

14/11/2014 Two photos of Matahui below ex Pam Cundy when owned by Tim Hall , he used her as a commercial fishing boat. He sold her to build another commercial fishing boat, ‘Skip Jack’ a 38′ Aztec. These days Skip Jack operates as a charter boat out of Gulf Harbour.

Sailing Sunday – Northcote & Birkenhead Yacht Club Regatta
Yesterdays (01/11/14) regatta marked the official opening of the Northcote & Birkenhead Yacht Club’s new clubroom. A selection of photos below – not my best, I took the wrong camera lens……………….. 😦
Nice to see the Idle Alongs in amongst the classic fleet, even had to help out one that had an oops 🙂

Mondays ww post is a goodie – the latest classic launch to join the CYA fleet – Arohanui, owned by CYA Chairman Rod Marler, a big day for the launch group i.e. the Classic Yacht Association’s top man is now a launch owner 🙂 Must be time for a name change –  Wooden Boat Club……………….. 😉

A Woody Labour Weekend

The weather split the CYA classic fleet in two this Labour weekend with some heading to Kawau for the opening of the ‘new’ Kawau Boating Club. From all reports it was a blast & well done to those that made the trip. The photos below of Kawau are from the camera of Margo & Jamie Hudson (Lady Crossley).
A selection of classic launches mooched around Waiheke Island & with the weather forecast –  Onetangi Bay was the most popular spot. We had to share it with a rather large number of plastic boats, I think every Rivia in Auckland was there, but for once they behaved & the hum of the gen-sets  was almost bearable 🙂
