Last weekends NZ Clinker exhibition at the Viaduct has ‘flushed’ a few clinker tales out of the bottom draw. 

Yesterday I was contacted by Rob Walker whose old friend, Colin Belcher, sent him the above photos of the 18’ clinker named Colin B. 

Colin believes that the boat was built for his father, Jack Belcher, c.1950/51 by a small boatbuilder (size of boat not height 🙂 ) in Ponsonby, possibly named McGeady. When launched it was powered by a Morris marine engine.

It was moored in Hobson Bay, nearest to the dinghy lockers in Ngapipi Road.

At Christmas time it was moored at Waiake Bay, to be close to their camping spot at Long Bay.

Colin commented that she was a seaworthy boat, & may have been involved in a tragedy when a man was drowned returning to Waikeke during a storm. Apparently the boat was purchased from his estate by the Takapuna Boating Club as a rescue craft.

So woodys – can we help Colin out & supply some more details on what became of Colin B. Back then she was a pretty looking clinker so hopefully a TBC member will recall her.

Classic Yacht & Launch Exhibition 2017 – The NZ Clinker Boat

Over the weekend the Tino Rawa Trust hosted the 10th Classic Yacht & Launch Exhibition at Karanga Plaza on Auckland waterfront Wynyard Quarter. If you missed the event, you really did miss something special. The feature this year was the New Zealand Clinker Boat.

I went to the opening commemorative (Tony Stevenson, likes flash words) morning tea on Friday, if you were looking for a wooden boat builder or a fountain of knowledge on wooden boats, you would have been stunned at the guest list, it was the who’s who of NZ classic wooden boat movement. If you weren’t there you must have done something really bad in a past life to not be invited 😉

Above is a selection of the boats on display, taken on Friday when the crowds were light. Enjoy 🙂

Talking to Tony Stevenson, Jason Prew & Baden Pascoe last night & this years event was hands down the most successful in terms of attendee numbers, Saturday being huge. Well done guys.

Ugliest Clinker & A Spot of Clinker Envy

My recent photos of clinkers prompted Don MacLeod to send in the two photos above – the top one in Don’s eyes wins ‘most ugly clinker’ hands down , the planking is a fright. I know Jason P would nominate another one, but we all need to play nicely Jas 😉

Don was not sure when the picture was taken, but believes it is on one of the rivers at Lake Taupo. Possible choices are the Tauranga Taupo, the lower Tongario or the Waihora in Western Bays.

Don’s second clinker photo shows a clinker powered by a Seagull south of Mana Island, going fishing in Cook Strait. Those are the radio masts at Titahi Bay behind.

This photo was taken early 1960’s Don believes, and it is a smart looking clinker getting along at a great clip.

Now Clinker Envy – I was dropping my clinker, Peg, off at the Classic Yacht & Launch Exhibition on Thursday night & spotted the beauty below, size & design wise, perfect for my launch Raindance – I wonder if the owner would notice if I swapped 🙂

Back in early August I posted photos / details on the restoration / rebuild of the 1947 27’ Chris Craft Super Delux – Slainte at Craig Maine at Lake Rotoiti (link below).

Yesterday Alan Craig sent me photos from last Friday’s relaunch on the lake. Alan’s a man of few words e.g. “ It floats, all went well” J

Slainte is a stunning addition to the Lake Rotoiti woody fleet – well done Alan & the brave owner that commissioned the project.

Baden Pascoe sent the above two photos of the Rockfort skiff that Percy Vos built in 1926. Baden commented that it has the most attractive planking of any boat he has ever seen – big call 😉

These days it is owned by the Percy Vos Charitable Trust & resides at the, maybe one day it will be restored – Vos Shed.

The real reason for today’s post is to remind you all about this weekend’s Clinker Boat exhibition at the waterfront / viaduct – details below

The Vos clinker will be on show, so you can check out if Baden is right re the planking 🙂

Back in Feb 2015 I did a story on the 1960 Snow Waters built launch ‘Poaka’ & questioned where she was today. Nathan Herbert gave us a heads up in Feb 2017 that she had popped up on trademe & she is still there today.
Looks like she has had some TLC & being a Waters craft she should be a solid ship. Interesting the difference between the painted cabin, versus the ‘as launched’ varnished finish (photo below), certainly looks sharper with the varnish (in my eye)
Powered by a 72hp, 4 cyl. Ford Diesel.
A nice entry level woody that with a little more work, could be a pretty classic.

Well a least for me, my first boat was made from  corrugated roofing iron like the above ones. The old nail holes were filled with road tar. Some would say I have not progressed far 🙂 (photo ex National Library collection)

Sorry for a somewhat lame post today, I’m laid low with food poisoning – not pleasant.

Kiwi woodys Jenny and Malcolm McNicol sent me the below photo essay from the Port Townsend 41st Classic Wooden Boat Festival from The Puget Sounds in Washington State USA. They were holidaying in the Sounds and got to enjoy the festival.
The McNico’s are members of The Rotoiti Wooden Boat Association and are the proud owners of Tauraka, which has featured on WW.

OMEGA BY QUALITY BOATS - 24.11.15 - 1

I received an email a couple of weeks ago asking for info on the launch Omega. A search of my files turned up the above photo, ex Ken Rickets that was tagged ‘Omega by Quality Boat 15-11-2015’. Never made it onto WW back then because it was a solo photo & did not show much. Given Ken’s abode, the photo is most likely to be taken at Gulf Harbour.
She looks a little racey, so with the right engine I imagine she gets along.
Interested to find out more Omega.

12-05-2018 Update ex Matt Hambrook – I bought Omega in Dec 2016 she is currently berthed at West park marina.
We reconditioned the 150 hp Ford engine in June of 2017. She cruises at 9-10 knots, and has a top speed of 15 knots.
Omega is 35 feet by 11 feet and was built by Quality boats in Tauranga in 1965. Designed by Carl Augustin.
We’ve many miles around the Hauraki with our 3 young kids and plan to do plenty more.
Any more information on her history would be much appreciated.

Built by one of NZ’s leading bespoke furniture makers ‘Rose & Heather’ – its design was inspired by the structural elements of a classic yacht & is handcrafted using traditional tools – the spokeshave & drawblade. A friend of mine owned a house in Ponsonby that was once owned by one of the Rose & Heather family – had a one of kitchen made by the firm – rather nice 🙂

KIRI MOANA – A Zoom Zoomer

Woody, Rod Prosser has the bug, he owns several classic woodys, mostly for use on Lake Rotoiti (Nth Is).

Whilst chatting recently he mentioned his go-fast woody. Rod bought Kiri Moana a couple of years back and has been slowly doing her up. Rod was told it was originally a North Island Ski Club boat but he hasn’t found out any more on that front. Rod originally had a 350 Vortec Mercruiser in the garage for the project but he got a little carried away when he went to an open day at the Toy Shed in Rotorua. The Toy Shed guys specialize in building hot rods and long story short is he swapped the Vortec for an early 1960’s small block Chev 327 V8, next things he’s on eBay sourcing all the shiny bits from the US. Rod commented that she has a ‘mother thumpa cam & is kinda loud 🙂

The interior’s come up well after scraping the orange paint off and the boats now with Sam Dorotich at Superior Boats in Manurewa getting glassed and painted (bright yellow!!). Rod will bring her home and widen the cockpit then back to Sam for the deck.

I have asked Rod to send us photos as the project proceeds & will update this story when he does.

10-11-2019 UPDATE – Boat dropped off at the upholsterer’s in Rotorua last week. Definitely in water this summer. Hopefully before Christmas 🙂

I like the new mudguards & wheels on the trailer – very retro. Alan H
