Woody Trip Down South

Woody Trip Down South

Nathan Herbert has just returned from a trip to Dunedin & snapped a collection of woodys that he saw – the first one to be shared on WW is the lovely wee clinker day boat above.

Can anyone enlighten us on her provenance ?

And I’ll use the post to segway into my next topic – The 2017 Classic Yacht & Launch Exhibition, on Oct 7>8th, refer below for full details. This year the focus is on the classic New Zealand clinker boat.

So woodys get the pen out & put a big circle around the weekend in the diary. The team at Tino Rawa Trust do an amazing job hosting these events & 2018 will be a cracker, I understand there will be over 30 clinkers on show. I’ll be reminding you closer to the date;-)

Also I have some tickets for this weeks On-the-Water Boat Show, so to be in to win – check out Wednesday’s WW post 😉

Mystery Launches – 25-09-2017

MYSTERY LAUNCHES 25-09-2017

A couple of mystery launch questions today. Last year Robin Elliott sent in a collection of photos from the Whangarei Cruising Club Collection, as far as Robin knows, all are from the 1940’s early 1950’s & and were taken by Palmer Photography in Whangarei (1910-1999). Most by the late Graeme Palmer and possibly some older ones by his father.

So woodys who can ID the one above?
Now the photo below – I suspect it is Jason Prew’s My Girl at full chat 😉 but the photo shows only 3 portholes versus the 4 seen in most photos. Jas ?

Beats A Day At The Office

There is a saying I like – “Some days you are the dog & some days you are the tree” – all week Friday was shaping into a tree day, so when David Cook called & asked for a hand taking Trinidad to the Greg Lees Boatbuilders, Sandspit yard – the answer was yeap I’m in 🙂

90% of the day = the 1st day of summer, the other 10% was wet, but that is greater Auckland for you.

Trinny, below, was being hauled out for some TLC before her upcoming circumnavigation of NZ (again).

Spotted a few classics at the new marina – scroll over photos to see names, most have appeared on WW before so a quick look in the WW search box will show / tell you more.

Caroline

Coroline

CAROLINE
Caroline was built by Roger Carey for Gilbert Rivas of Whitianga in 1951. She still has her original 3LW Gardner & measures 36’L x 10’B x 4′ 6″D. She still has her original 3LW Gardner. She was maintained by Howard Pascoe.

The photo above shows her berthed at Whitanga, Baden commented that it was nice to see an old girl return to her home port.

Do we know anything about her past life?

UPDATE 07-10-2019 Movie below, ex Allen Heatlie,  showing Caroline underway after painting inside and out.

JOANNE

Another photo from Dean Wright’s recently scanned collection – this one shows the charter boat Joanne steaming down the Whangaroa Harbour. Dean recalls skippered by Laurie Ross.

Any of the woodys able to shed some more light on her design / builder & where she is today?

Update 17-01-2023 – photo below ex Eric Sanderson, date unknown

20-09-2023 UPDATE ex Barry Ogilvie –  I bought Joanne from Gene Jacobson back in 1999. Despite the considerable deterioration in timber that was found post purchase and the subsequent cost to bring her back to a safe working standard it has been a pleasure to be her custodian for the last 24 years.

Omega

OMEGA BY QUALITY BOATS - 24.11.15 - 1

OMEGA

I received an email a couple of weeks ago asking for info on the launch Omega. A search of my files turned up the above photo, ex Ken Rickets that was tagged ‘Omega by Quality Boat 15-11-2015’. Never made it onto WW back then because it was a solo photo & did not show much. Given Ken’s abode, the photo is most likely to be taken at Gulf Harbour.
She looks a little racey, so with the right engine I imagine she gets along.
Interested to find out more Omega.

12-05-2018 Update ex Matt Hambrook – I bought Omega in Dec 2016 she is currently berthed at West park marina.
We reconditioned the 150 hp Ford engine in June of 2017. She cruises at 9-10 knots, and has a top speed of 15 knots.
Omega is 35 feet by 11 feet and was built by Quality boats in Tauranga in 1965. Designed by Carl Augustin.
We’ve many miles around the Hauraki with our 3 young kids and plan to do plenty more.
Any more information on her history would be much appreciated.

BAILEY TABLE

Screen Shot 2017-09-15 at 4.27.48 PM

How if Steve Horsley or Harold Kidd win Lotto tonight, I have the perfect first purchase for them – the Bailey Table. Built by one of NZ’s leading bespoke furniture makers ‘Rose & Heather’ – its design was inspired by the structural elements of a classic yacht & is handcrafted using traditional tools – the spokeshave & drawblade. Youtube link below to see more.
A friend of mine owned a house in Ponsonby that was once owned by one of the Rose & Heather family – had a one of kitchen made by the firm – rather nice 🙂

Waimarie II

WAIMARIE II

Waimarie II was built by Oliver & Gilpin. The photo above was taken in 1984 & comes from Dean Wright’s recently digitized collection.

Dean commented that she was bought by Gerard Fitzgerald in 1986 and run as a charter boat in the Bay of Islands for two years, then someone bought her changed her name to Kiwi Cruiser and ran her for many years. Sadly Waimarie II hit Tapeka Point (B.O.I.) one night and was a total loss.

Do we know any more about her?

NUKUTERE – Part 1

The owners of Nukutere have asked if the WW readers can supply anymore details / history on their launch. We know that she was built by A. Sang & Sons, of Wellington in 1942 & she is 46’ in length & kauri planked.

Currently powered by twin 80hp Ford (Lees) diesels – installed in 1979 that push her along at between 9>10.5 knots. Home these days is Onahau Bay, Queen Charlotte Sound in the South Island.

She may have been used as a patrol boat in Wellington during the war.

WW understands she is 4sale – would be nice to see her head north & join the CYA cruising fleet 😉

Mystery Lidgard Launch

Mystery Lidgard Launch

The above launch is only a mystery because the broker has not revealed her name.

I can tell you that she was built by Lidgard’s in 1955, is 35’ in length, with a 10’5” beam. She has a kauri planked hull. The zoom zoom comes from a 120hp Ford diesel & home is the Marlborough Sounds.

Any southern woodys able to ID this launch?

Rangi – Wanaka

RANGI – Wanaka

According to her trademe listing, Rangi built in 1908, measures 33’ & is a double ender made from kauri. She has been moored at Lake Wanaka for the last 15 years and previously in Te Anau for 40 years. With her length, shape & powered by a Ford 86hp diesel, she must get along at a good clip.

Do we know know anymore about Rangi?
