Classic Woody Boating Cruise

For all the wrong reasons I didn’t do a lot of boating (on my boat) this past winter, so the looming long Labour weekend was always going to see me leaving the dock even if the weather was ‘inclement’. Luckily it wasn’t and I slid away early Friday afternoon with the ultimate destination being Kawau Island. The boredom of mostly straight line motoring was broken up by Team NZ cutting up the gulf in their AC40, so so quick.

Decided to spend Friday night anchored at Moturekareka Island, the resting place of the wreck REWA (unsuccessfully scuttled as a breakwater) , not the most settled of spots but the sunset and the bird song made up for it.

Moved on earlier Saturday to Smelting House Bay and picked up a pre-booked mooring, now before you all call me a softy, we had the new dog onboard for its 1st trip and wanted to be close to shore – didn’t want an oops on board. I can report she was an angel – woke me at 5.30am for a row ashore. Sadly she also seems to think the #1 bunk is hers 🙂 The bonus of the dog pee row ashore is catching the sunrise, almost as fine as the sunset.

Mostly just relaxed mooching around, had a drink and dinner catch up with the crews off Meloa, Ngaio, Lady Adelaide and Golandrina at the Kawau Boating Club, which had just taken the shutters down after the annual winter hibernation. Food and service was first rate – if you are not a member – join, they need good support to keep doing what they do so well. The next day we dropped the pick in Vivian Bay – very quiet and later in the day several woodys arrived – seems to be the go-to destination for the Sandspit marina crowd.

I spied a stunning villa on the waterfront in Vivian Bay – photos below, will need to keep buying Lotto 🙂

Trip home on Monday was just about perfect for a straight stemmer e.g. wind and tide on the nose – 3 hours 45 min from KBC > Bayswater, that’s a good clip for my 94 year old girl.

Following along from last Sundays post, the photo above shows the 1904 Logan built Eva paying a visit to Charlie Hansen in 1936 on Moturekareka Island, the wrecked hull of Rewa can be viewed in the background.  Robert Patterson is standing at the end of the wharf and his crew Keith Penny in the white pants standing on the sailing vessel. On their return trip from Auckland they delivered supplies to Hansen and he gave them the wheel and other items off the Rewa. Baden understands it is now/was in the Onerahi Cruising club.
Eva was steamed to Auckland as Robert had installed a new K3 Kelvin diesel of 66hp. The agents were Vivian and Leo Walsh who had their business above Fosters in the AET building (Fosters). The brothers insisted that they inspect the installation so the warranty would be honoured.
Shame the government did not back them when they requested funding so they could set up an aircraft manufacturing business. The Government thought they were just silly young men mucking around with a vision that had absolutely no future 😉

Todays ww task is – what happened to Eva & anyone able to ID the yacht alongside?

“I’ve been told by the owner of the 28ft Mullety (Logan Circa 1910) Cora, that she was once owned by the owner of the Island Moturekareka at the time of the scuttling, and that the principal reason for the ‘seawall’ was to provide him with an anchorage for Cora.
Cora’s now in the Bay of Islands, in good shape with a close-to-original gaff rig on her.
Whether this is her in the photos, I’m not entirely sure, but when the present owner bought her, she had a similar profile to the vessel in your photo.”

Lady Cynthia – a bit of a mystery

Harold thinks the photo above of Lady Cynthia rafted up alongside the wreck of Rewa is c.1937. He also suspects that she only had the name Lady Cynthia for a brief period around this time, so the big question is what was she named before & after?. There is speculation that she  could have been a big flushdecker pre-1914.

The above photo is of the Rewa hulk and as you can see the masts are still standing. Dave thinks it’s before the WW2.

Harold commented that it looks like a Navy Liberty boat, cutter alongside Rewa.

Rewa was bought for a fiver by Charlie Hansen who lived a hermit’s life at Moturekareka . Rewa was a beautiful ship with a lot of life left in her but alas, there was no need for that sort of ship any more.
She was towed to the exposed bay intended as a wave break. She sank in the wrong place but still continues to meet her intended purpose.
Parts of her rigging went into Johnny Wray’s boat Ngataki in exchange for provisions (read South Sea Vagabonds –a ripping yarn).
She was slowly leveled off over the years. Farnsworths tore a lot of steel out of her in the ’60s.
And there she lies, making the ultimate sacrifice. I shudder to think of the prospect of getting a resource consent to do this these days!
