Classic Woody Boating Cruise

For all the wrong reasons I didn’t do a lot of boating (on my boat) this past winter, so the looming long Labour weekend was always going to see me leaving the dock even if the weather was ‘inclement’. Luckily it wasn’t and I slid away early Friday afternoon with the ultimate destination being Kawau Island. The boredom of mostly straight line motoring was broken up by Team NZ cutting up the gulf in their AC40, so so quick.

Decided to spend Friday night anchored at Moturekareka Island, the resting place of the wreck REWA (unsuccessfully scuttled as a breakwater) , not the most settled of spots but the sunset and the bird song made up for it.

Moved on earlier Saturday to Smelting House Bay and picked up a pre-booked mooring, now before you all call me a softy, we had the new dog onboard for its 1st trip and wanted to be close to shore – didn’t want an oops on board. I can report she was an angel – woke me at 5.30am for a row ashore. Sadly she also seems to think the #1 bunk is hers 🙂 The bonus of the dog pee row ashore is catching the sunrise, almost as fine as the sunset.

Mostly just relaxed mooching around, had a drink and dinner catch up with the crews off Meloa, Ngaio, Lady Adelaide and Golandrina at the Kawau Boating Club, which had just taken the shutters down after the annual winter hibernation. Food and service was first rate – if you are not a member – join, they need good support to keep doing what they do so well. The next day we dropped the pick in Vivian Bay – very quiet and later in the day several woodys arrived – seems to be the go-to destination for the Sandspit marina crowd.

I spied a stunning villa on the waterfront in Vivian Bay – photos below, will need to keep buying Lotto 🙂

Trip home on Monday was just about perfect for a straight stemmer e.g. wind and tide on the nose – 3 hours 45 min from KBC > Bayswater, that’s a good clip for my 94 year old girl.

SUNDAYS MYSTERY LAUNCH QUIZ WINNER

Woodys Riverhead Tavern Classic Launch Cruise

Saturdays weather forecast was a wee bit gnarly but with the promise of an improvement later in the day – Harbour bridge > Kauri Point – unpleasant. Kauri Point > Herald Island – average. Upper Harbour > Hotel Good.

The time ashore was perfect, great location, service and the food very good. Return trip ok, except for between the Hobsonville and Te Atatu area – SW wind was whistling thru from the Waitakere Ranges.

We had 10 woodys turn out, 4 of them being newbies to the creek – Awarua, Manu, Margaret Anne and Waione – nice boats, nice people 🙂

WAIONE AT MAHURANGI REGATTA

WW has followed the restoration / refit of the 32’ launch Waione since 2016, links below to the 3 stories tracking her progress.

Current custodian is Daniel Taylor, the 3rd generation family member to enjoy Waione. Daniel and his father Steve, have been at the helm of the 20 year project.

While mooching around the Mahurangi regatta I spotted Waione at anchor – she looked very impressive and I’m sure Daniel’s late grandparents, Jack and Missy McCabe – would approve 🙂 

Daniel shared the photos below from the launch day and her sliding into her temporary waterfront home for final fit out.

WAIONE RESTORATION UPDATE #2


Today’s story sees us taking a peek inside the boat shed at Quayside Marine, Mahurangi where Daniel Taylor is putting the finishing touches to his families launch – Waione. Daniel is the 3rd generation to own the boat. Taking over from his father Steve and grandparents Jack and Missy McCabe.

FREE TO GOOD HOME – BUT BE QUICK (>24HRS)

The Roy Parris launch (sub 20’) below has washed up on an inner harbour beach (broke her nearby mooring) and will most likely be salvaged and taken to the landfill within the next 24hrs. The photos are 2+ years old, but give you an idea of what she could look like again. The last photo is as of yesterday. Perfect opportunity for someone wanting a winter project. The engine is outboard in a well – I believe the intention is to sell the o/board (75hp) to re coup salvage costs. Contact owner on 027 254 9442 – but do it now.

RIP BERT WOOLCOTT

Sadly I report that Bert Woolcott, partner of Margaret, passed away last Friday in hospital, aged 76. While a lot of woodys that have had the privilege of attending the annual CYA Patio Bay, Waiheke Island weekend will be familiar with Bert and Margret’s legendary hospitality, most wouldn’t be aware of the volunteer work Bert did in the background – on Classic Race Committees, skippering finish boats at classic regattas and club racing. Bert always made the time to chat and would always enquire about your vessel and more importantly how you were.

Bert was a big man with a big heart and leaves a big hole in the classic boating movement. Fair Winds.
A funeral service for Bert will be held in the Main Chapel of the Morrison Funeral Home on Friday the 19th of February 2021 at 3.00 p.m 

Waione Restoration Update

WAIONE RESTORATION UPDATE
I was contacted recently by Daniel Taylor, the son of Steve Taylor who took over the restoration of Waione from Daniel’s late grandparents Jack and Missy McCabe . Daniel advised that his grandmother unfortunately passed away in September last year. 


Daniel has decided to help his father who took over the project as of the start of this year.  Waione is being finished by Daniel as he works in the marine electrical trade, also helping is the skilled team at Quayside Marine, Mahurangi  . As we can see from the above photos, the interior fit out is well underway.She measures 32’ in length and could have been (thanks HDK) built by Joe Wheeler.

ww has had a request from Gary Chaplin, who owns the yacht, Fidelity, see below & click photos to enlarge, based in Christchurch Gary has commented that she looks just like the Shiralee which featured on ww in October , (link below).
Gary would like to know if it is the same  vessel or possibly a sister ship . Gary believes Fidelity was built in Milford Creek by Allen Williams in 1960 .

WAIONE (LAUNCH) AT OMAHA- 28.6.16

During a recent visit to boat builder Colin Brown’s Omaha yard, Ken Ricketts was shown the launch Waione that currently shares shed space with Little Tasman.

Waione is approx. 32′ long & these days is cared for by Steve Taylor, the son-in-law of the  elderly owner Dorothy McCabe. Steve told KR, he thinks she may have been built by Baileys but is not sure, so input from other woodys would be much appreciated, to confirm or correct this.

Waione was bought by Dorothy & her late husband Jack in the mid 1990s, Jack passed away in 2001. Currently Waione is being refurbished for Dorothy by Steve. She has an 80hp 4 Cyl Ford diesel, the same engine when the McCabes bought her.

Dorothy  has advised that Waione was originally owned by  the Alf Court family & Dorothy has seen a  photo of Waione from that era, shown to her, by one of her own family, who is married to a member of the Court family.  Dorothy has also been told that the boat may have been intended to be taken to the Pacific Islands, which never happened.

When the McCabe’s bought her, she was at Gulf Harbour & they initially moored her after they purchased her, at Herald Island, but they later moved to the Warkworth area & took her to Mahurangi, where she is now moored, when in the water, however she has been undergoing her present refit for some time. In a past life she may have been moored at Milford Marina.

While its hard to get a good view of the boat from the above photo, KR commented that it appears  the present coamings are not original, although aesthetically acceptable & appropriate.
Interested to hear from any woodys that may know more about Waione’s past.

A former owner to c1985, Dean Silich, thought WAIONE was built by Joe Wheeler at Bayswater c1970 which is more likely than Baileys, frankly. Joe Wheeler died in 1972.

Whats The Coolest Yacht Club 10 Minutes From Queen St? Sailing Sunday

Its not the rnzys or ponsonby cc or even the dyc (ferry ride) – its the Herne Bay Cruising Club (HBCC) & yesterday they hosted the 2015 Sloanes Beach Regatta & Centerboard Cup. I dropped in for what I thought would be 5>10 minutes to take a few photos & ended up staying 90 minutes, the Santa shopping list got pushed out a day 🙂

The HBCC club rooms & its location would have to be one of the best kept secrets in the city, located off Marine Parade & tucked away amongst a stand of pohutukawas its a magic spot to sit on the grass & watch some good-old-fashioned kiwi boating. The kids were even selling home-made lemonade & coconut ice 🙂
Its also rather special – its got major boating provenance – the club rooms were built in 1913 as the Richmond Yacht Club & was a hub of wooden boating activity prior to RCC moving to the Westhaven area.

The location sort of (as in impossible) makes it hard to launch a biggish boat there so its mainly centerboard stuff but there is a very cool membership feature – the club as a few boats that members can use e.g. a couple of Lasers, a Spiral & a dinghy for rowing & fishing + storage for who wish to kept their boat at the club.

Conditions yesterday were ‘very fresh’ as in SW 20>25 knots with 35 knot gusts – this scared a few city boys & girls off but as always the mullet boat’s fronted up + one Idle Along (IA12)
The photos below are from the pre-start & start, I left after that but driving over the Harbour Bridge I could see them stonking down the Harbour, I might be wrong but I think I caught a glimpse of the IA getting into a spot of trouble.

21-12-2015 Results ex W. Muir

Yes it was a great day, thanks for the photos.  Mullet boat results were 1st on line, and on handicap,Orion.  2nd on handicap TaoToo, 3rd Rangi Manu. The IA broke her tiller while screaming down the harbour with her spinnaker up, she did a spectacular wipe out and was towed back by the PCC Rescue boat.
You missed another fab part of the day, music from jazz combo Hopetown Brown.
Looking forward to next year ( and a little less wind )
