Bay Of Islands Woodys

Over the last month Bay of Islands photographer Dean Wright has sent in a selection of woodys that he has spotted in the BOI. The last two are of small launch, going past Otehei Bay, the owner is obviously very handy with rope, thats an impressive collection of fenders on display.

As always I’m vert taken with Te Honu that Brin Wilson built in 1963. Always looks a bigger boat than her specs – 34’x 10’6”. I believe she is still powered by the original 100 HP 6 cyl. Lees converted Ford diesel. You can see and read more about her here   https://waitematawoodys.com/2015/08/25/te-honu/

Woody Cruising In The Bay of Islands #2
Today’s gallery are again from BOI woody and pro photographer Dean Wright’s camera, Dean snapped the photos above of – Centaurus, Lady Ellen, Mana Rose, Kualani and his own classic woody – Arethusa seen at dusk. The gent in the very smart sailing dinghy is Angus Rogers, owner of Centaurus.

The 50’ Kualani is a newbie to WW and the BOI – Dean did some sniffing around and learnt that she was built by P. Jorgensen & Sons boat builders of Picton. When built she was powered by twin Gardner 5LW engines, looking at the photo of her, there are two very impressive exhaust pipes up top, which might suggest something with a tad for HP than the Gardner’s delivered. FYI – link here showing some (not sure if its all) of the Jorgensen built fleet https://jorgensenboats.nz/boats/

Below is a spec sheet of Kualani as she was built (no mention of the year), we have moved on a lot in terms of being PC, the reference to the bollards in the ‘ Deck Hardware’ section – would get you in a lot of trouble there days 😉 Also below is a photo of Kualani in Waipiro Bay, Gisborne – dated January 2020.

Woody on Tour

Ken Ricketts sent in the selection of photos above from a recent trip (car) up North to the Bay of Islands.
An eclectic mix of craft – some known, some not – we see Manuia in the Waitangi Inlet, Mana Rose hauled out on her owners Opua front lawn, the salty wee ship Weitox.
Anyone able to ID the unknown below?

MANA ROSE

Bay of Islands professional photographer & woody (MV Arethusa) Dean Wright emailed me the three photos above of the launch Mana Rose, Dean took them last Sunday morning. A very cool looking boat & looks very capable of handling most things that the ocean could throw at her. Dean commented that Mana Rose lives on a mooring close to the Russell side of the car Ferry.

Her anchor winch would get the tick of approval from Dick Fisher 😉

Can you of the woodys supply more details on her?
