HELENA

Helena was built by Shipbuilders c.1960. 28’ in length & kauri planked. The zoom zoom is via a 150hp Ford diesel giving a cruise speed of 7 knots.

Her trademe listing states that she is ‘priced to sell’ but at $35k she might hang around for a while + you have to wonder at people’s desire to actually sell a boat when you see how they present them in the photos.

Do we know any more about Helena?

Harold Kidd Input – In 1966 she was registered with APYMBA and owned by A.R. Martin of Palmerston North but kept at Auckland.

Very Cool Classic Sailing Clinker Dinghy 4 Sale

I was contacted last week by CYA buddy Dan Renall who pointed me in the direction of a woody that was looking to off load one of his dinghys. Wise man, very few that get bitten by the bug are able to let them go.

Owner Drew Hayward has a classic launch that he keeps in the creek on the way out of Kawakawa Bay. He also has another clinker so has decided to part with this one. 

Details are – 14’, built by boat building tutor, Keith Aitkenson of Carrington Tech. Kauri planks with steam bent hardwood ribs. Her sails are by Boyd & McMaster. Mast is solid Oregon, as is the boom & gaff. Drew commented that as pictured above the hull needs a little clean up – mainly mould.

Anyone interested in this woodys should initially contact Drew Hayward via email  drew1949@icloud.com A very cool gift for a young woody, so come on dads & grandads – its the perfect way to start the kids off in woody boating.

STARDUST

Stardust is a 36’ Athol Burns Kauri built woody. 

Her trademe listing states she was built in 1962 & zoom zoom is via a 80hp diesel.

Home is Motueka, Nelson.

Anyone able to tell us more about Stardust?

KINGFISH

Anyone looking for a bargain classic woody? Kingfish is listed on trademe (thanks Ian McDonald) with a $1 reserve & an oh to familiar tale “its leaking and sinking and due to a marriage breakup its not getting the love it needs” 

I can tell you she was built in 1914, is double skinned kauri, measures approx. 33’ in length, & powered by a 120hp diesel.

I’m certain KINGFISH has been on here before. She was built by H.N. Burgess at Judges Bay in 1914 as a hybrid yacht/launch, expressly for game fishing and spent her early life based in Gisborne and Tauranga. Unrecognizable from her original configuration with quite a big rig.

27-05-2018 Input from Dave Butler – Kingfish was owned by Jack Peat from Te Puna who had it moored in Tauranga harbour in the 60’s. He was a member of the Tauranga game fishing club and I have numerous photos of him and crew with marlin, makos, and threshers caught near mayor island. Kingfish was powered by a Gadyver engine? which Jack replaced. He gave me the old prop because the new engine revolved the drive shaft in the opposite direction. Jack sold her in 1972 and she was moored at the new marina in Tauranga harbour for several years after that.

11-06-2018 – Update. I can report that Kingfish has joined the Pollard fleet & has already been given some TLC , refer photos below hauled out + photos of her being retrieved for the trip ‘home’.

AWATEA – Sailing Sunday

The above photos of Awatea come to us via Bruno Redwood’s facebook page – & show the yacht Awatea in a tributary of the Henderson Creek c. November 1931.

Awatea was but in 1886 by Charles Bailey Snr in Auckland. She was sold to a Henry Swan c. 1897, & there is an urban legend that in1901 Swan reputedly told his friends that he was embarking on a solo world navigation, when in fact he sailed Awatea to the creek & spent the next 30 years living aboard or nearby. Harold Kidd has advised the story is “total bollocks” – Swan being a wealthy, retired solicitor, who owned a large property on the banks of the Whau River, on which he had large commercial orchards. He was also chairman of the Roads Board.

He died in November 1931.

Jason Prew had advised that these days Awatea is in storage at Whangaparaoa.

04-07-2018 Input from Colin Brown – Colin was a part owner of Awatea for a few years with Pete Mcurdy & his wife. Colin is in the process of building a scale sailing model (photos below). Colin confirms Jason’s comment above re her current whereabouts.

WOOLLACOTT Looking For A Home

I have been contacted by Phil Parks the Dockmaster at Sandspit Marina about a little Woollacott (photos below) on the hard at the Sandspit Yacht club.

Her present owner inherited her but has come to the realisation the project is too big for him so she is for sale for giveaway price.

She is complete, 6 winches, solar panels, alloy rig. Phil commented that she is a pretty little boat. She needs to be saved. So woodys – any one want a project?

Aorere

AORERE

Aorere was built in 1965 & is 18’ 6” in length, & her 18” draft allows her to mooch into a lot of spots most boats can’t.  A 8hp Yanmar diesel engine pushes her along at 5 & by the look of the rig on her stern she is a good scallop boat. Currently located in Riwaka, near Motueke at the top of the South Island.

She is for sale on trademe (thanks Ian McDonald).

Anyone know who built her?

WANDERER

Wanderer has appeared on WW (link below) before when she was berth at Milford Marina & crying out for some TLC, refer photo below.

I happy to be able to say that she has received the TLC & is for sale. Currently she calls Half Moon Bay home. The photos today are ex trademe (thanks Ian McDonald)

Wanderer past is a wee bit of a mystery & this is debated in the WW link. We do know that she is approx. 28’ & is powered by a Perkins diesel, her hull is kauri .

Mistral

MISTRAL

Mistral’s trademe listing does not tell us much other than she was built in 1947, measures approx. 23’, is powered by a LD 28 diesel engine (is that a Lombardini?).

She was refitted 5 years ago at an approx. cost of $30k. Home is Dunedin & there is a trailer, so would make a cool lake boat.

Any southern woodys able to tell us some more about Mistral?

 

Waitanguru

Waitanguru was built by Allan Williams in 1953 & measures approx. 33’ & has a 9’10” beam.

She is kauri carvel planked, & powered by 39 hp Yanmar diesel. You’ll see from the trademe photos (thanks to Ian McDonald) that she is very well fitted out, & has been in survey.

Do we know anymore about her?

Input from Harold Kidd – WAITANGURU was built by Alan Williams for Petersen of Te Awamutu. She is 31′ x 11′ and had a 4cylinder Ford originally. She went first to Taupo then to Tauranga in 1966. Gerry Dawson of Caster Bay owned her in the 1970s and kept her at Milford. By 2001 she was owned back in Tauranga by Les and Pam Dawson and used for charter game fishing. A very able boat.

13-05-2018 Update from Ron Dawson 

Waitanguru was built in 1949 I beleive on spec and bought by Frank Peterson of Piopio in the King Country. He finished the boat and kept in Milford. My father bought the boat in 1967. In 1968 dad raised the dodger and kept Waitanguru in Milford until he sold the boat in 1988. The boat originally had a Coventry diesel motor which was replaced with a 60hp Ford diesel in the early to mid 60s. Dad replaced that motor to a 72hp Ford diesel late 60s.  Waitanguru went to Gulf Harbour for a couple of years and then to Taupo about 1990. I’m not to sure when the boat was moved to Tauranga. I do know Waitanguru had an outboard motor on the  stern trolling for trout on Lake Taupo. The boat length was 28 feet plus boarding platform. 

Waitanguru’s name comes from a place on the road from Piopio out to the coast at Marokopa in the King Country.

Wakatu – A Peek Down Below

Wakatu was launched in Dec 1976, her hull was built by Des Scott & then finished off by her first owners – Ron & Mary McGehan.

Now if she looks like a Roy Parris design, that would because her designer, Graeme Bronlund had worked for Roy 😉
