AWATEA – Sailing Sunday
The above photos of Awatea come to us via Bruno Redwood’s facebook page – & show the yacht Awatea in a tributary of the Henderson Creek c. November 1931.
Awatea was but in 1886 by Charles Bailey Snr in Auckland. She was sold to a Henry Swan c. 1897, & there is an urban legend that in1901 Swan reputedly told his friends that he was embarking on a solo world navigation, when in fact he sailed Awatea to the creek & spent the next 30 years living aboard or nearby. Harold Kidd has advised the story is “total bollocks” – Swan being a wealthy, retired solicitor, who owned a large property on the banks of the Whau River, on which he had large commercial orchards. He was also chairman of the Roads Board.
He died in November 1931.
Jason Prew had advised that these days Awatea is in storage at Whangaparaoa.
WOOLLACOTT Looking For A Home
I have been contacted by Phil Parks the Dockmaster at Sandspit Marina about a little Woollacott (photos below) on the hard at the Sandspit Yacht club.
Her present owner inherited her but has come to the realisation the project is too big for him so she is for sale for giveaway price.
She is complete, 6 winches, solar panels, alloy rig. Phil commented that she is a pretty little boat. She needs to be saved. So woodys – any one want a project?

She appears to be a very well cared for classic. Any of the southern Woodys able to shed some light on her?

Awatea is 11.5 meter and designed by Bruce Askew for me in 1993 .
She was built by Chris Morrison in Christchurch and launched in Lyttelton in 1995.
The hull is strip planed with Totara cabin sides , silver pine lined coach roof , kauri trim.
Power is from a Yanmar 4JH2UTBE 100 hp diesel.
She cruised comfortably at 8 knots
I cruised her round Banks Peninsula for a season then steamed her up to Havelock where we used her as a sounds commuter. She was sold in 2000 and relocated to Mana marina.

Check out the mud berth, these guys must get a few seasons out of their anti-fowl paint, 1/2 the day they are high & dry 😉
The above photo was sent in by Nathan Herbert & we have no details on the launch. Aside from the luggage rack on top of the cockpit roof , she is quite a pretty ship, in my eyes.
Anyone able to tells some more about the vessel?
Update – a collection of photos below from Nathan Herbert & Ken Ricketts from over the years – my question is – whats the current name of the launch, can a Thames woody confirm she is named ‘Awatea” ? (It is – thx Jason P)
Updated Details (ex Ken Ricketts) Her original name was Flolaine after the owners wife Flo & daughter in law Elaine, & was built by & for Major (a Christian name) Bailey, in a shed, a behind his Caltex Service Station, (Southdown Motors), in Penrose, in 1958. She is now Called Awatea. – She is powered by a 6 cyl 80/100 hp Ford diesel .
She was not built with a flying bridge but one had been added by an owner somewhere along the way, back around the 1970s/80s, when she was living at Westpark Marina.
The Baileys owned her for several years & replaced her with another 34′ launch Major B. built in the 1960’s called Christine (photo below)
