CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH – LADY ALLISON NORLOCK + BOAT BOOT SALE

After yesterday bumper story on the 2025 Classic Woodys Boat Show at OBC Marina, I thought your eyes may need a rest, so a short one today.

The wooody launch NORLOCK recently popped up on tme, thanks Ian McDonald, in a previous life she was named LADY ALLISON.

The listing states that she was built in 1958 by Colin Wild, I suspect this isn’t correct as I’m told Colin Wild’s last boat was in 1955 and he died shortly after that. 

What we do know she is approx. 33’ and powered by a 140hp Lees Ford engine that has her cruising at 8 knots.

Interior looks quite smart and she appears to be another bargain buy at $9k ono.

Can we learn more about the vessel and clear up her heritage.

CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH MARINUS RE-LAUNCHED

The brief was for a Jason Prew Paint Job and to overhaul her running gear (driveshaft, props etc), well as is almost always the case the shopping list grows and approx. 9 weeks later MARINUS was re-launched yesterday.

The most visible highlights being her new colour and the removal of the 2 lower portholes.

Quick overview – Designed by A. Deeming, built by Barr Brown, 46’x12’4”x4’ , and powered by twin Cummins 85hp diesel engines.

CLASSIC 1923 DOUBLE END LAUNCH BONITA – GETS A BIRTHDAY

Over the last few weeks the 1923 Ernie Lane (Picton) built launch – BONITA has been getting some TLC at the Slipway Milford yard.

WW first spotted BONITA in Waikawa Bay, Marlborough Sounds in May 2022, at the time she was for sale, top photo below.

Fast forward to July 2024 and the launch was moored off the old Salthouse yard in the upper reaches of the Waitemata Harbour. Her new owner Chris Salthouse had transported her from the South Island to Auckland and given her a makeover which included a change of hull colour (blue) – as seen in the second photo below.

As part of the 2025 TLC the hull colour has changed again – this time a green sea mist colour. I like it but of the 3 ‘recent’ colours, the royal blue was my pick. I understand the dark blue was too harsh with the sun re seams opening up. TELL US YOUR PICK ON THE HULL COLOUR – VOTE BELOW

I understand that the next project is a new larger cabin.

There has been lots of chat on the correct spelling of her name – but it was BONITA when built and originally was working a Sounds passenger vessel.

CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH – MARINUS GETS A BIRTHDAY

Back in April 2023 we got to have a gander down below on the 1946 classic wooden launch – MARINUS. A link to that story below. As you will see MARINUS has one of the smartest looking interior in the woody fleet. https://waitematawoodys.com/2023/04/17/marinus-a-peek-down-below/

46’ in length she was designed by A Deeming and built by Barr Brown in Wellington.

In late April when helping relaunch Angus Rogers CENTAURUS, MARINUS was the next up the slipway.

Lots of TLC happening but the two projects that meet with my approval are:

1. The two lower portholes have been removed

2. The chosen colour of her Jason Prew Paint Job (JPPJ) – we kiwis are very boring in our chosen hull colours eg white>>>>>

You only have to look at the classic wooden boating movement in the USA for inspiration – well done to the owner for making the call.

And there’s another woody hauled out on the #3 slipway thats going to sport a splash of colour – details soon.

Given all the recent upgrades in the marina it seems wrong to refer to it as Milford Creek. Maybe the areas now fitting of the name that some of the mud berth dwellers use – ‘Wairau Cove’.

I spent some time there yesterday helping with the relaunch of Angus Rogers 1968 Bailey & Son built launch – CENTAURUS that had been out at the Slipway Milford railway slip for some TLC and a JPPJ (Jason Prew Paint Job) – a minor opps – flat batteries………. meant a delayed start, so plenty of time to pull the camera (phone) out. A 3.5m tide equalled a lot of activity at the Slipway and the adjacent Milford Cruising Club hard stand.

The standard of the woodys in the marina seems to be improving in the last few years , probably a combination of the new bridge , upgraded MCC yard and the big crew working at the Slipway Milford. 

Nice to see that the small berths along the roadside have almost exclusively been taken over by the Pied Piper fleet. The MCC yard was home to some out for early winter TLC.

I won’t disclose how many berthing attempts we had back at CENTAURUS’s marina but while Angus blamed the out going tide and wind – me thinks the new JPPJ was the reason i.e. skipper was a tad gun shy and didn’t want to mark the boat on the first outing 😉

In the Jan/Feb issue of the USA magazine WoodenBoat they ran a small feature on some of the best Youtube channels that focus on wooden boating. Most of them are on my watch / rotate list but I thought some of the WW readers might appreciate knowing where to look. I hope the links below work, if not given the weather forecast to have plenty of time to manually search 🙂

My favourites are – TALLY HO, Building a boat by the river, Travels with Geordie and Madison Boatworks. 

Also in the magazine is a great article on the re-building of TALLY HO by Leo Goolden, worth the cost of the mag just for this. As an aside Leo’s YouTube site has had over 113 million views and has been an amazing funding stream for the project.

And of course there has to be a boat photo – on Thursday I was at The Slipway Milford and both CENTAURUS  and AWARIKI are looking stunning. CENTAURUS has the final coat on her topsides and owner Angus has been leaving away on some of the brightwork. The varnishing work has also just started on AKARIKI’s coamings.

Dropped into the Slipway Milford yard yesterday and very happy to see two woodys hauled out on the railway slips for some serious TLC.

We reported in mid Feb (link below) that the 32’ 1967 Owen Woolley built and designed launch – AWARIKI was in the process of losing her flybridge (✔️), well woodys the work continues, the team are currently refurbishing the interior.

Alongside AWARIKI is the 42’ 1969 Bailey & Sons built launch – CENTAURUS, out for a JPPJ (Jason Prew paint job) that has turned into a back to bare wood effort. The starboard side has one coat on and already looks the bees knees. Owner Angus Rogers is onsite attacking the brightwork, so this old lady will be very regal when she relaunches.

Well done to both owners for investing in the upkeep of two of our finest classic wooden craft.

Bumped into a fried who is an antiques dealer and he showed me a recent find – the wording on the front of the gold medal / badge reads – Memorial Hewson Cup 1925, back – 14’ One Design Championship of Waitemata For Youths Under 21 – ‘Queen March’ – W. Rogers’. I bet W. Rogers had no idea the value of their medal in 2025.

INPUT ex ROBIN ELLIOTT – Queen March, sailed by Billy Rogers on that day, was owned by Eliot Davis, brother of Sir Ernest Davis, and named after Eliot Davis’ champion racehorse. The race was won on a resail because it was later revealed that the skipper of Joan, winner of the first race, was 2 days over the 21 years limit. Three medals were presented to each of the crew Billy Rogers, Doug Rogers and D. MacKay

Today thanks to tme and Ian McDonald we get to view the Wellington based canoe stern wooden boat – MOLLYMAWK, built in c.1930 in Nelson by Jack Guard.  Her original name was  – VALETTA.Built from kauri her specs are 31’6” x 8’4” x 3’. Powered by a 20hp Hupeh engine.Current owner has had her for 25 years and commented that he has made 50+ Cook Straight crossing in the boat.

A PRODUCT PLUG – (I bought it, no trade bribes) Recently discovered a great boat wax, called ‘Meguiars Flagship Marine Wax’. Not cheap $85 for 475ml but so easy to apply and no residue white marks on fittings etc. The photos tell the story. Just had my boat out for some TLC at the Slipway Milford, her bottom was the worst ever, a sad reflection on the amount of use in 2024 ……….

In a Dec 21st story we did a fly-by of the last minute, year end work happening at the Slipway Milford. I mentioned that the 36’1921 Arch Logan built launch – NGAIO was hauled out to have a set of davits fitted to accomodate the recently refurbished clinker (f/glass) tender. Fast forward to this week and the Slipway team, which included owner Jan Barraclough, are putting the final touched to the new set-up and the sinks got a ’sea-trial’ in the creek.

Well done to everyone – a stunning executed project.

CLASSIC WOODEN BOAT IONA II MAKES A SPLASH – NZ Restoration Of The Year

We have been following (link below) the refit the classic wooden launch IONA II at the Slipway Milford yard since late May. Last week she slipped back into the water , check out the video below – don’t you love a railway haul-out, such a gentle procedure.

IONA II was built in 1994 to a Bruce Askew design so sits very comfortably into the spirit of tradition category. The recent work commissioned by her owner has magnified her existing appealing looks and made her even more easy on the eye.

Probably the finest example of the Slipway Milfords work – so a big shout out to Cam, Jason, Jan and team. Easily the restoration of the year in New Zealand.

I’m pretty sure nothing on the boat has escaped an upgrade or replacement – the biggest being ditching the Nissan TD23 60hp diesel engine and installing an electric propulsion set-up.

A few finishing touches to be completed at the marina – we will do another update when completed.
