Is It A Boat – Is It A House

Is It A Boat – Is It A House

Some doozies have recently popped up on the web – the top photo I had to treble check to make sure it really was an actual boat. Would get very ‘interesting’ in anything over 2 knots of wind. It does win the WW competition for the boat that most resembles a block of flats award 🙂

The 2nd photo is a boat converted to a land based dwelling.

The last is an architects (I use the term loosely) attempt to include a ship into a new build.

Take your pick woodys 🙂

AROHA Weekend Cruiser Build
Our friends over at Off Center Harbor have just given us a heads up that the Brooklin Boat Yard in the US have purchased an Aroha kit and will be filming OCH (& BBY) guru Eric Blake setting up the kit. Should make for a very interesting video series.

Also in the OCH news, is the Aroha build by John Pratt, the photos above are from John’s home workshop in North Carolina. Below are two photos taken by Dean Wright of the ‘mule’ for Aroha – the kiwi designed and built – Whio. Dean took the photos in Deep Water Cove, B.O.I. in 2014.
You can read more about Whio and Aroha here + details on purchasing her building plans / kits https://www.offcenterharbor.com/plans-och-aroha/

Paihia Wharf Launch Hire

Photo above of the shed on the wharf at Paihia advertising the various boat rides available, most likely taken in the early > mid 1940’s.
The signs lists Korora, Aroha, Moana for hire. I have photos of Korora & Moana – do not have one of Aroha – any woodys able to help out & also confirm the correct boats/photos?

Another photo from the Jack Brooke collection. Son Robert thinks the location is North Harbour, Kawau Island, but not positive.

What do we know about Aroha ?

Input from Harold Kidd

I have always thought that this image was at Lidgards’ property at Shark Bay in Bon Accord. The launch is the 23’9″ x 6’3″ AROHA owned by T H Scandrett of Mullet Point about this time. She was built about 1907 in Auckland but I can’t tell you who built her. She had a 4hp Standard marine engine and reverse gear.

Aroha

AROHA

Aroha is a kauri carvel planked 6.4m launch designed & built by C E Thompson, Dargaville, for Frank & Millie Macklow. She was fitted with a ‘Kelvin Ricardo E 4cylinder petrol (or paraffin) engine , featuring 2 sets of 2 cylinders with separate carbs, this enabled either pair of cylinders to be switched off. I have heard her running & she sounds rather ‘sweet’. This motor was designed by Anton Bergius of Glasgow & was fitted to a lot of Scottish trawlers. As an aside his nephew, Conrad Bergius lives in Auckland & is a diesel mechanic.
Amazingly Aroha is still powered by the same engine & maintains its original colours, accessories, trim, tools, stripped canvas cushions, manuals & warrantee.

In 1950 Aroha was hauled from Dargaville by road to Lake Rotoiti & launched at Mourea. She has spent the last 64 years on lake at Otaramarae Bay.

Her owner Warwick Henderson, purchased her in 2002 & renamed her Aroha after his mother, Aroha Avis Hutchinson.

Anyone able to expand on her year on build, original name & her life pre 1950 ?
