Unknown / Mystery Boat 20-07-2017

I was sent the above photo by Ray Morey, Ray is hoping to be able to ID the vessel.  It was on the Waikato River in the mid 1950’s operated by ‘Henry’s Sand Co.’, until being replaced by the steel tug “S.P.”  – Ray has no idea where she came from nor where she went.

Can any of the woodys help out with any details?

Woody Brett Evans sent me a link to a feature on a sleepy seaside village in France with a small fishing port, a population of less than 3,000 and some very peculiar-looking houses. At a moment’s glance, they could almost appear to be an unfortunate pod of beached orcas, but look again carefully at those unusual roofs. Yes, those are boats … upside down! Local fishermen of Équihen-Plage have lived under scavenged boat hulls here for over a century and today, many of these upturned vessels now serve as a unique holiday accommodation for travelers visiting the French coast. Today’s ww post shows an unknown launch anchored in the Warkworth River, date unknown also. Given the location I suspect it could be a Tudor Collins photo. Ken Ricketts who emailed me the photo thought it could possibly be a lost sheep from the Allan Coggan photo collection.
Anyone able to ID her & supply more details?

The above launch has just appeared on trademe & according to the listing the owner due to health reasons is unable to continue with the project. The owner states that he believes she may be called ‘Leigh on Sea’, can anyone ID / confirm a name / more details.
She is 39’4″ in length & powered by a 120hp diesel, it states the engine year is 1920 but I suspect that wrong, more likely the build year?

That is one impressive cradle, built for the Queen Mary 🙂 Thanks to Ian McDonald for the heads up on the listing.

Today’s photo was sent to me last year by Gavin Bedggood. While she could be one many ‘HQ Holdens’ i.e. general transport for the gulf, her size might make ID’ing her possible.

The photo below ex Baden Pascoe puts a new twist on the term ‘from tree to sea’ – in this case the opposite 🙂

Ngapuhi – Help Wanted

Today’s post features a launch that is most likely named Ngapuhi. In fact Harold Kidd is 95% sure of that & we are pretty confident she was owned by S.B. (Hoki) Williams the manager of Shipbuilders post WW2.

But the big questions are – who built her?, when? and what happened to her at Shipbuilders?. One thing for sure, she is a fine looking ship. So woodys can anyone help out on her provenance?

Today’s post features two Tudor Collins photos of an unnamed yacht beached at Baddeleys Bay, on the Tawharanui Peninsula, photos ex the TC collection at the Auckland Museum emailed to me by Ken Ricketts.
Anyone able to ID the yacht & how she came to end up on the beach ?

Few things in life scare me – but I do have a thing about snakes – if it had of been me working on the electrics of this boat, an underpants change would have been on the cards 🙂 Click link below to watch the video

Morning woodys – the above photos were sent to me by Peter Mence, Chairman of the NZ Classic Yacht Association. Peter spotted the hull ‘resting’ in Pine Valley Road, Dairy Flat, Albany.
Someone must know who she is & how she ended up.

The question of the day is – how many boats can we ID? The launch, center right, is obviously the RNZY’s tender Colville

I have recently been sent details on a couple of old girls that look like they need a home &/or some love.
The photo above was sent in by Murray Deeble & in his words is ‘currently pretending to be a dairy cow & needs saving as she has quite a history’. Just what that history is, Mr Deeble has not disclosed, so can any woody enlighten us? She is located at Kakaramea, in South Taranaki (near Patea).

The vessel below, we are told is a 1930’s kauri built launch that has been sitting in a dry shed for the last 10 years as an unfinished project. Her interior has been gutted out & there is no engine. Sadly as a result of a deceased estate she is available for the sum of $1. Pick up is ex Wiri in Auckland. From the photos we can see there is a nice hull – anyone looking for a project or some kauri? Thanks to Greg Skinner for the head up.

Comet Speedboat

COMET Speedboat

I was recently contacted by Tim Dudek who had brought an old speedboat from the back of Makarau to the north of Auckland. Tim was told by the previous owner it was built in 1927 and goes by either the name or make of ‘Comet’ – unfortunately the previous owner knew little about her history.
She is made of kauri and Tim is currently restoring her & has his fingers crossed his father is gathering an interest 😉

Hopefully Tom will keep us in the loop on the rebuild, in the mean time, can any of the woodys help out with her history ?

18-03-2017 – Input from John Bullivant  –  I have the drawing below from the D.N.Goodchild  (Penn USA, website (no longer running it seems) of a boat which looks like it, the plan being named ‘Comet’. If it is a boat built from this 40s? plan it would be a pity as a plan could have been obtained for around $20 to work from. Not sure if the site is ever coming back as the chap who ran the company which reproduces these old plans has apparently been ill, sold his house and may have given it up. I bought a set of plans for my Schock 15ft day-sailer and a number of others from him a while back and they were very professionally done.
