KERIKERI INLET MOOCHING

Bay of Islands woody, Dean Wright snapped the above gallery of photos on his iPhone in early August whilst mooching around the Kerikeri Inlet. 

From the top down, left > right we have – Alma G > Shalom > Te Honu > Dareen > Tranquila > Pearl Diver > Westerly > and the very salty looking yacht – Cameo

Input ex Belinda Moss – Cameo is Eric Cox design built by Lionel Jeffcoate for himself. He sailed her with his family in the Pacific, and to the Chathams and Auckland Islands. Sister ship to Encore (sloop rig) which he built after selling Cameo. These are two of the 57 boats Lionel built on his own.

Job opportunities in the marine industry are few and far between even in the current times, particularly in the better companies. Regular WW readers will know I’m a big fan of the crew at Moon Engines, so when James Mobberley mentioned that he was on the hunt for mechanic to join the team, I volunteered to help the search – So woodys if you or someone you know is considering a change of scenery – give James a call, you will have to leave a message, we all do – too busy on-the-job, to take calls- thence this ad 🙂

Shalom – A Peek Down Below B4 She Is Sold

If you blinked and looked again you would think that Shalom the 48’ Atkinson designed and 1973 built classic sport cruiser was a Ray Hunt designed craft. Hunt was one of world’s leading marine designers – from motor boats to Americas Cup yachts. So we can safely assume Atkinson was a good reader of USA boating magazines 🙂

Shalom has been very lucky in terms of owners, built by T K Atkinson as his own personal boat, her next owner kept her for approx. 30 years and these days she is owned by a renowned NZ boat building family.

Yes she is for sale – and as you can see above – superbly presented and professionally maintained. In recent years her owner has refitted Shalom for extended family cruising, she comfortably sleeps five. The work includes – new deck (2016), master cabin refit (2017), new saloon and galley (2018), new paint job (2019), new rudder tubes + drip-less seals (2021), new steering cylinder (2021), new batteries (2021). As presented the vessel is ready for immediate enjoyment. And the X factor – twin Yanmar 370hp engines – giving a top speed of 25 knots and cruising speed of 17 knots. With a beam of 14’6″ she has an abundance of living space across five zones – cabins, saloon, cockpit, fore deck and flying bridge. Construction is kauri double skin and finished (glassed) to require minimal ongoing upkeep.

The selection of woody photos above was sent in by Bryce Strong, details and links to previous WW stories below. I hate Digital dates on photos but it is a very simple way to record when the photo was taken – two are dated 2013, interesting to see how the vessels have faired in the last 13 years.
The top photo of the steamboat – Duke of Marlborough, is a newbie to me. I’m looking forward to Russell Ward chipping in with her history 😉

I have been contacted by Richard Winthrop looking for information on a boat builder named Sutton Malcolm & Co. Ltd of Mt Roskill, Auckland. Many years ago Richard had a Mason Clipper that had the sticker below on it.

Woodys Cruising the Far North – Xmas – NY 2016/17

Bay of Islands based woody & professional photographer Dean Wright as always had his camera handy during his Xmas / NY cruise on board his classic Arethusa.
The vessels featured above are listed below, doesn’t Arohanui look a picture, wonderful advertisement for the team at Greg Lees Sandspit yard 🙂
Valerie is my pick, but I have a soft spot for straight stem tram-tops 😉

SHALOM B.O.I. CHRISTMAS 2014

During the recent CYA meet-up at the Salthouse Boat Yard at Greenhite, we got to see Greg Salthouse’s own launch ‘Shalom’ up close. She was built in 1973 in Browns Bay by local boat builder T K Atkinson as his own personal boat. When launched she was approx.  42′ but while in the ownership of her 2nd owner, Howard Collier, she had an extra 6′ added on by a now non-existent company, in Whangarei.
She is powered by 2 x 350 hp Yanmar diesels & has a top speed  of around 25 knots & cruises comfortably at 17/18 knots. A wee bit faster than his father-in-laws magnificent classic – Trinidad.

Greg & Delayne Salthouse have owned Shalom for 3 years & commented that although T K Atkinson built her for himself, she was owned by Collier most of her life e.g. 25>30 years. Collier kept her at Whangarei during this period. Greg believes she was built to a design ex the American designer, Ray Hunt.

A while ago I (Alan H) was aboard & Greg has sprinkled some of the Salthouse yard magic on her, mainly modernizing the interior to better suit his young family. For 48′ she  is a very big boat. When I was aboard I was in company of Colin Pawson, one of the marine trades most fastidious technicians & he was impressed enough by the T K Atkinson’s workmanship that he was heard to mutter ‘I’d own her’, enough said 😉
While she is sporting a penthouse, it is very ‘light’ in appearance & almost gets a tick 😉
