Over the weekend Lake Rotoiti’s favourite boatbuilder – Alan Craig (Craig Marine) held an open day at his workshop in Paengaroa (Te Puke) , the first three photos above are from the day. The blue hulled launch in the first photo is the 1930 Sam Ford built launch – Marjorie Rosa in for deferred maintenance, will be looking shipshape again very soon.

A new convert to the wooden boating world is Geoffrey Fiebig, who recently purchased off Jason Prew a Frostbite named Meteor, sail #13. Geoffrey as you will see has started the thank less job of stripping the interior planks. 10/10 for attire, the new WW cap completes the look 🙂

30-05-2023 UPDATE – a nameless woody drew to my attention that many (30+) years ago a Tauranga newspaper article appeared about a young man/teen named Jason Prew who dragged Meteor out of a derelict shed on a lake and restored her to go sailing. Note the miss spelling of the surname Brew -see below

A few weeks ago I was tipped off by Adrian Pawson that one of his buddies – James Ledingham, had ‘acquired’ a very special Frostbite named Classico, one of things that makes her special is that she was built but never launched, so effectively is a new boat. Adrian is the owner of – Kiteroa, the ex Brooke family boat, which Adrian has restored and ’tweaked’ a little, thats her in the photos with the orange hull.

I was onto James quick smart to get more details. But before that I have to say how cool it is to see these ‘young’ sailors getting into the classic wooden dinghy sailing scene. The guys sail out of Taikata Sailing Club in West Auckland (Te Atatu), on a good Sunday there are upwards of 15 Frostbites racing. Both Adrian and James would be too modest to say this – but both work at the very pointy (high tech) end of world sailing, which makes their passion for these woodys even more special 🙂

Adrian also supplied for our review (see below) a copy of Doug Sharp’s secret copy of the ‘Frostbite Go Fast Tips’ by Kevin Lidgard.

I’ll let James tell the story –

“Recently I was fortunate enough to purchase ‘Classico’ a wooden frostbite dinghy.

What made this boat unique, aside from her immaculate timber detailing, was that she was brand new and had never been sailed. Something of a rarity in the frostbite class these days.

‘Classico’ is the result of a labour of love by her builder and previous owner David Strickett (Brother in law of Rex Maddren – a well-known Frostbite sailor and champion in his day). Looking for a wooden boat project and with a love of the clinker style, the Frostbite dinghy was a natural choice for David to get stuck into. Having picked up his wooden boat building skills at Carrington Tech under the guidance of Robert Brooke (son of Jack Brooke, who designed the original frostbite back in 1937) he was certainly well equipped to tackle such a build. Robert helped him source some temporary frames from Wakatere Boating Club and he got stuck in.

The boat is built in kauri, the majority of which was sourced from a farmer in Mangamuka, just south of Kaitia. The exception was the single piece transom, which came from a kauri slab that David already had in his garage.

Many hands make light work and during the build David sought help with the planking and ribbing from Robin Dew, who had built several wooden Frostbites himself. Whangarei boat builder Nick Rodokal also lent a hand in constructing the gunwhale, having previously built David a Lotus 9.2 (Pursuit).

David kitted the boat out with modern aluminum spars, a Quantum Mylar sail, and the latest Harken deck gear. Adding a touch of performance to the classic kauri hull.   

It was a bittersweet moment to launch ‘Classico’ down at Taikata Sailing Club on the first Sunday of March 2020, ahead of the regular afternoon sailing. She would have been equally at home in a museum (or the lounge!) and once wet and raced, unlikely to ever be quite be as immaculate again. However, they are such great boats to sail I was looking forward to getting out and seeing what she could do. She was appropriately blessed by another frostbite legend, Doug Sharp, and champagne was poured. A successful first sail ensued with minimal leaking.

While the quality of the boat couldn’t be faulted her performance was an unknown. However, she certainly seems to be fast (when the skipper sends her in the right direction) so far grabbing a 2nd in the first race of the Taikata Sailing Club winter series held earlier in March.

I plan to race her regularly down at Taikata Sailing Club, where the Frostbite fleet is thriving – with 12+ boats on the start line every fortnight. Wooden boat enthusiasts are welcome to come down to the club and have a yarn. There are a good number of well-kept and restored timber Frostbites amongst the fleet, and no shortage of stories! 

The name ‘Classico’ stems from a holiday dinner in Tuscany where David and his wife were enjoying a bottle of traditional Chanti wine – Chianti ‘Classico’.”

2018 Classic Yacht & Launch Exhibition – The New Zealand Sailing Dinghy

This years Classic Yacht & Launch Exhibition, hosted by Tino Rawa Trust, at Karanga Plaza in Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter, was a 3 day celebration of the New Zealand Sailing Dinghy.
The event showcased many of the successful designs that created our world class sailors & formed the backbone of your sailing clubs.
I went along on Friday morning to the opening morning tea 🙂 & rubbed shoulders with some of our wooden boating legends, these morning teas are always a special treat. We were entertained by another of Robert Brookes talks – always beautiful delivered & an entertaining insight into Auckland’s sailing past. If you have not seen Robert’s & the Brooke families latest book ‘Memories – Roads of Destiny’ (WW link below) grab a copy at Boat Books in Westhaven – its a must have / read.

When I picked up the Jan/Feb issue of the uber cool kiwi lifestyle magazine – NZ Life & Leisure, I discovered that there is someone else out there that’s been bitten by the classic boating bug, big time 🙂 Enter Charlotte & Richard Stevens, their menagerie of boats includes – ‘D’Urville’ a 70′ kauri, Laurent Giles designed motor boat, built by McMullen & Wing in 1975 – ‘Mickey Mouse’ a 1967 Ford 10 powered Albatross Motors speedboat – ‘Carvel’ their exquisite 1962 Norm Keen designed & built lake boat – a Frostbite, a Lazer, numerous canoes/kayaks & paddle boards AND a 45mph V8 powered ski boat. That ww followers is an impressive collection.

The article is a both a great read & a wonderful visual insight into the life & boats of Charlotte & Richard & we thank them for sharing it with us.

The Frostbite – Corsair

At the recent Classic Yacht and Launch Exhibition  at the Viaduct, the 2013 event  showcased the acclaimed designers Jack Brooke & Bob Stewart. One of the outstanding boats on display was Paul Baragwanath’s exquisitely restored Frostbite ‘Corsair’, the attention to detail was just amazing, even featuring her original restored 1945 trailer. Corair was built by Jack Brooke in 1945 for Don Winston.

“She was built in 1946 for my grandfather, Don Winstone, and named after the planes he flew in WWII. The Frostbite class was designed in 1938 by Jack Brooke, and Corsair was built by him too. A few years back I tracked her down – derelict, but pretty much whole, in Nelson. We knew it was Corsair from the name let / inlaid into the middle thwart and the Corsair aeroplane profile in the for’d thwart. Teak in Kauri. Kauri hull. Oregon spars. Pohutukawa knees. Mahogany cappings. Teak and kauri floor grate. Australian hardwood rudder stock and kauri rudder. Kahikatea centre-board (from her time in the Waikato?). Mahogany mast supports. Brian Kidson who had owned did a good deal of work preparing and restoring the hull before she came north to Auckland for the woodwork to be completed by Jack’s son, master wooden boatbuilder Robert Brooke.

We restored the chrome hardware (Onehunga Electro Platers / Bumper Repairs – brilliant), re-created missing elements (Morris Sheet Metal and another engineer) including the lettering on the stern, restored the original 1946 mast, Frank Warnock created a traditional sail by hand, and I did the low-skill bits, and brought it all together. Ropes from Classic Marine in the UK. Other parts from Harken Fosters.

Robert designed a period road trailer with 1939 pressed steel Standard 10 wheels that I found on Trademe (Marlborough Sounds), and a friend who is a sculptor, David McCracken, made the trailer. I believe the Frostbite was NZ’s first specifically-designed trailer class – with it’s split / gunter rig – so a period trailer and launching trolley are part of it. It was the last class designed that you sit in, rather than on.

Robert’s lifetime of experience and eye resulted in what you can see – from the handmade wooden blocks, fine plank lines, floating thwarts, the traditional flick-bailer, right up to the pheasant feather pennant / wind vane atop the mast.

The colour is Eau de N’il – Water of the Nile – with a forest green waterline. My grandfather liked green – he also had a runabout named Amber (1950s 17 foot Greymarine engine) with a green waterline. Traditional white below the waterline. The interior is white house-paint up to the thwarts which sets off the varnish above that.

We don’t tend to race – wooden blocks, wooden grate, 1946 mast and rudder… but do sail off Narrowneck in Auckland, and Tutukaka, Ngunguru and Whangaumu Bay up north.

I put together a small book on the restoration – a few years ago now. The aim was to get her to A level condition – which we did, and she won the best restoration at the Lake Rotoiti (Nelson) classic boat show – and then to just enjoy her. She’s a delight to sail. Predictable, responsible and beautifully balanced. On the wind in a chop a for’d hand is useful for bailing!”
