HIDDEN FOR YEARS – HELP NEEDED IDENTIFYING THIS WOODEN CLASSIC

HIDDEN FOR YEARS – HELP NEEDED IDENTIFYING THIS WOODEN CLASSIC

Recently WW was sent the above photo from Gabrielle Marris, who was looking for help identifying the craft. Gabrielle’s father had recently passed away and as part of the ’sorting out belongings’ there was a rather large belonging e.g. the boat, stored in a shed. Gabrielle commented that it had been there a long time and her dad had once worked on it with her grandfather.

I shared to photo with a few WW readers and all were in agreement that in another life she would have been a sail boat , this view is supported by the presence of chain plates on her hull.

Anyone with sharp eyes and a good memory able to tell use the design of the vessel.

TAREE – OWEN WOOLLEY CLASSIC LAUNCH RECEIVES SOME TLC

TAREE – OWEN WOOLLEY CLASSIC LAUNCH RECEIVES SOME TLC

While walking the docks at the recent Classic Woody Boat Show at the OBC I bumped into boatbuilder Colin Brown, who mentioned the recent work his son-in-law Josh Hawke (Kauri Classics ) had undertaken on the 1966 36’ Owen Woolley built classic launch – TAREE.

TAREE was in the Kauri Classic shed for work to her running gear e.g. new shaft log and floors + some planking work.

CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH – LADY ALLISON > NORLOCK + BOAT BOOT SALE

CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH – LADY ALLISON NORLOCK + BOAT BOOT SALE

After yesterday bumper story on the 2025 Classic Woodys Boat Show at OBC Marina, I thought your eyes may need a rest, so a short one today.

The wooody launch NORLOCK recently popped up on tme, thanks Ian McDonald, in a previous life she was named LADY ALLISON.

The listing states that she was built in 1958 by Colin Wild, I suspect this isn’t correct as I’m told Colin Wild’s last boat was in 1955 and he died shortly after that.

What we do know she is approx. 33’ and powered by a 140hp Lees Ford engine that has her cruising at 8 knots.

Interior looks quite smart and she appears to be another bargain buy at $9k ono.

Can we learn more about the vessel and clear up her heritage.

CIRCLE THE CALENDAR – ONLY 10 DAYS UNTIL THE BOAT BOOT SALE AT THE SLIPWAY MILFORD YARD – AUG 2nd

We already have a great group of boaties looking to off load their treasure , details below. Still not too late to secure a spot, or just rock up on the day.

BONITA  – Only In The South + Boat Boot Sale

BONITA  – Only In The South

Cameron Pollard sent in the top photo of – Bonita, seen here in the Marlborough Sounds c.1985. Bonita was built in 1923 by ER Lane in Picton, her specs are 36’ in length with a beam of 8’6”.

The second photo is from the 1960> period and the last from 2022 when she had just had a major birthday prior to selling.

There is a wonderful history of the vessel in the WW links below.

UPDATE 30-08-2023 – Input ex Cameron Pollard. Photos of Bonita as launched and later pics from the 1960’s.

Westhaven Marina 1969 – Who Owned the RR

Westhaven Marina 1969 – Who Owned the RR

The above 1969 photo popped up on fb back in June of this year – it would appear that the photographer is G Riethmaier and its ’saved’ in Archives NZ.

Quite a few woody yachts hauled out at the long gone area thats now board-walk – to me the stand out is the Rolls Royce casually parked amongst the cradles and trestles.

Any guesses as to the owner and which yacht it was linked to?

THIS SATURDAY – 26TH NOV – WOODY BOAT BOOT SALE – 10AM – DETAILS BELOW CASH ONLY + $2 GOLD COIN SAUSAGE BBQ

Waipa + Boat Boot Sale

WAIPA + BOAT BOOT SALE
Baden Pascoe recently sent in the above photo of the workboat – Waipa and commented that she was owned by Ray Bronlunds and if his memory is correct, Logan built. Wait brings back many memories for Baden, having helped his father, Howard, and Ray cut the box shed off her. This would have been back in the days Baden wore short pants i.e before school days and he was helping them do odds and ends. Then Howard Pascoe built the configuration as in the above photo. Back then s.he had a Perkins P4 and went like stink. With in a year Ray and Waipa were no 1 cray boat in the Bay taking the crown off Ronomor and Norma. Do we know what became of Waipa?

Left, A young Ray Brondlund and Don Ross on
board coaster Lady Jocelyn . Without any question two cornerstones of
Whitianga commercial boating and absolute gentlemen. Just to add Ray is a
former owner of the lovely Waione.

Rehutai + Woody Boat Yard Boot Sale

REHUTAI + Woody Boat Yard Boot  Sale

Sunday night I was scratching the head thinking what Tuesday’s WW story would be and ping – I get an email from Sally Verbiest inquiring about her grandfather’s, Roy Barton, Sam Ford built launch – Rehutai. Roy lived in the Wairarapa when he owned the boat, unfortunately Sally doesn’t know the dates, but Roy dies in 1968, in his early eighties.

The photo above is from an old family album and Sally thinks it was taken in Queen Charlotte Sound. The rather lovely cartoon, was drawn by a friend of Sally’s father – a depiction of Roy, whose main retirement hobbies were boating and polo. He must have been a great guy 🙂

Sally has asked that if current owner Tony Whyman? or anyone that knows him, could contact WW (via the comments section) as Sally would like to see these items reunited with the the boat.
You can see and read a lot more on Rehutai here   https://waitematawoodys.com/2019/04/12/the-restoration-of-rehutai/
