CLASSIC WOODY 1913 BEACH PICNIC

CLASSIC WOODY 1913 BEACH PICNIC

Now if you haven’t managed to get afloat this Labour weekend, I hope you are at least close to the water.

One of my overseas based progeny sent me the top photo recently, it popped up on her Devonport residents fb feed.

The location is Cheltenham Beach, Devonport and was taken by A H Jones in 1913. Source is the Auckland Libraries Heritage Collection. Obviously the image has been colourised, a common habit back in the old days.

I sent back the 2nd photo that I took earlier in the week – same beach and one of the reasons I live in Devonport. The other reason is Cafe Santini (63 Lake Rd), owner and barista Alessandro makes the best coffee in Auckland and if you ask nicely he will sell you the legendary TONI’s pizza dough – perfect for the home pizza oven (photo below – its been a while since I did a food photo 🙂

What do we reckon the yacht is.

SINABADA – A CLASSIC HALVORSEN EX GAME BOAT

SINABADA – A CLASSIC HALVORSEN EX GAME BOAT

Todays photo recently popped up on one of the many classic boating threads that I follow, and the 44’ SINABADA is just too stunning to not share.

She was originally built in Sydney, Australia as a sports fly game boat and used extensively for big game fishing, note the out rigger poles.

Built by the famous Sydney wooden boat building family – Halvorsen, she was later modified by extending the flybridge roof after more Shae in summer (major consideration in Aust).

At 44’ SINABADA must be one of the largest Halvorsen’s built, the family cut their teeth on building smaller (28>32’) launches. A lot of which were hire boats on the Sydney Harbour.

Back in Nov 2023 we run a WW story on the history of the Halvorsen dynasty – link here https://waitematawoodys.com/2023/11/04/the-halvorsen-story/

CLASSIC EX WORKBOAT WAI-ITI

CLASSIC EX WORKBOAT WAI-ITI

The ex 38’ workboat Wai-iti was built c.1960’s, kauri hull and powered by a Detroit 471 Diesel engine.

That woodys is all we know, would be nice to fill in the blanks, she still retains a very salty look.

BUSY DAY ON THE WAITEMATA TODAY – The Coastal Classic is starting off North Head around 10am, then we have Kawau Boating Club / Ponsonby Cruising Club Spring Splash Regatta staring at 12pm at Westhaven. Could be a long race for the Coastal Classic boys, no records this year 🙂 To the classic woody skippers heading to Kawau , see you there, check out yesterdays WW story for full details.

WOODEN LAUNCH NICOLA  + LABOUR WEEKEND WOODY DETAILS

WOODEN LAUNCH NICOLA  + LABOUR WEEKEND WOODY DETAILS

Todays woody photo was sent in by Ken Ricketts who ‘uplifted’ the image off fb.

The 36’ launch in the photo is named – NICOLA and from the NZ Herald press clipping (29th August 1930) we learnt that NICOLA was referred to as a ‘Hired Launch’, which I assume means she was in charter eg day cruises / trips.

She drifted from her mooring at Devonport and came ashore on the new city side waterfront road, again assume in the Orakei area.

The press clipping stated that NICOLA was extensively damaged – do we know what became of her and who designed / built her.

READY TO UNWIND THIS SUMMER – CLASSIC MOTORBOAT – VANESSA TICKS ALL THE BOXES

READY TO UNWIND THIS SUMMER – CLASSIC MOTORBOAT – VANESSA TICKS ALL THE BOXES

Get first glance you would think that the 49’ motorboat -VANESSA , falls into the converted ex-workboat group. But not this girl, she is a purpose built spirit of tradition woody. Designed and built in 2005 by Devonport boat builder – Rob Roberts as a custom passage maker. Her hull has two layers of 15mm ply over 150×150 mahogany ribs, and laminated kauri stringers, then glassed .

Powered by a Caterpillar 3160, 210hp diesel engine that was reconditioned in 2005, the Cat will see her comfortably cruising at 8+ knots and she slips 8L an hour, very impressive for a 20 ton wooden craft. Combine that with 3,200L of fuel tankage + 1,600L water, she really lives up to the passage maker tag.

In the interests for low maintenance , long haul cruising – her systems are very ‘old school’ i.e. no turbo, no ‘blackbox’ engine electronics etc. But no money has been spared on her navigation and house systems.

VANESSA has just returned to the water after her annual maintenance work (photos below) and is now for sale and presents in hop on > sail away condition.

A wonderful craft that visually has all the feel good vibes of a classic boat but with the low maintenance benefits of a 2005 build date utilising the best materials and construction methods.

Interested parties to initial contact the Wooden Boat Bureau at waitematawoodys@gmail.com for more details

CLASSIC LAUNCH – NANA – SAVED AGAIN

CLASSIC LAUNCH – NANA – SAVED AGAIN

The classic wooden launch – NANA started life in 1934, designed by C.Bailey Jnr and built by C. Bailey & Sons. 35’ in length she was very quick in her early days eg 17 knots.

Fast forward to 2014 and she was hit on her mooring and took on a lot of water. The wonderful shipwright- John Wright stepped up and rescued the boat and restored her (photos below c.2017/8 when relaunched.

Fast forward again to June 2023 and WW was running a SOS story looking for a new custodian, not sure the outcome but one of my woody spotters John Dawson saw a fb story by John Woodcock advising he had purchased NANA and had commenced a refit on her – as seen above.

Hopefully we can follow the project and keep you updates.

MYSTERY CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH AT MILFORD MARINA – NGAHI

MYSTERY CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH AT MILFORD MARINA NGAHI

On a recent stroll around the Milford Marina on Auckland North Shore I spotted the classic sedan launch seen above. No name so hence todays story.

Looking a tad too perfect so must be a recent restoration, hopefully the topsides haven’t been given a coat of that thick paint (eg f/glass).

Also a question for the purists – what’s the kosher direction for coaming planks – N > S or W > E, struggling with the upright grain look.

INPUT ex NATHAN HERBERT – The launch is NGAHI and its been glassed and the coamings are teak overlay.

View details on the refit here https://waitematawoodys.com/2023/04/10/ngahi-gets-a-makeover/

BIG SHOUT OUT TO THE CREW AT TEAM NEW ZEALAND – WELL DONE. Not only are they #1 in the Americas Cup world, several of them have very good taste in pleasure craft – classic woody of course 🙂 The old WW merch was seen to be making an appearance in the cup village

SOUTHERN WOODY MASON MARLIN RUNABOUT + Riverhead Tavern Lunch Cruise Details

SOUTHERN WOODY MASON MARLIN RUNABOUT

I was contacted about todays woody earlier in the year, at the time the boat was based in Queenstown and was looking for a new owner.

Her then owner had spent a lot of money on her, the Honda 50 hp 4-stroke would have broken most peoples budget.

No name visible – keen to learn if she sold and where she ended up.

EXCITED ABOUT THE UPCOMING LABOUR WEEKEND WOODY SPRING SPLASH AT KAWAU ISLAND. Below are details on the next woody event after Kawau – circle the calendar.

CLASSIC GAME FISHING LAUNCH – BLUE SKIES

CLASSIC GAME FISHING LAUNCH – BLUE SKIES

During the week I was sent the b/w photo of the game fishing boat – BLUE SKIES, a quick search on WW and we see the photo appeared in a Oct 2021 story, we learnt the photo of BLUE SKIES in Whangaroa Harbour, Northland was used by the Marlin Hotel in an publicity advertisement in the #4 issue of the Northlander published in 1964.

The photo triggered my memory that I had photographed a launch named BLUE SKIES berthed at the Thames Marina. Check out the winch set up, very OTT 🙂

Back in the 2012 story we never uncovered details on the designer / builder – any new input?

IF I WON LOTTO – WHAT CLASSIC WOODEN BOAT WOULD I OWN

Deal Island 50

IF I WON LOTTO – WHAT CLASSIC WOODEN BOAT WOULD I OWN

Well woodys the first thing I would do is jump on a plane and fly to Melbourne , Australia and go and see Tim Phillips at The WoodenBoat Shop in Sorrento. I met Tim in Feb 2023 aboard his 100 year old ’cruising smack’ – STORM BAY at the Australian Wooden Boat Festival in Hobart, Tasmania. Tim, family and cruising buddies had sailed over for the festival. Fresh crew attire was supplied via the waitematawoodys merch bag. (Photo below of Tim aboard STORM BAY)

At the time I just thought Tim was a genuine good bugger but unbeknown to me Tim is the powerhouse behind Australis’s leading wooden boat yard – The WoodenBoat Shop. And that woodys is who I would trust to build me my dream boat. Visit the website here to view / read more about them www.woodenboatshop.com.au

The TWBS team have just launched their latest creation – WINTER COVE, the Deal Island 50, on display this weekend at the Melbourne International Boat Show at Docklands Marina.

As well as building and restoring wooden boats, the WBS have their own custom range of bronze chandlery.

In the photo gallery above, most of the photos are of the WINTER COVE the Deal Island 50, but I have included a few workshop and other TWBS craft images to help set the scene.
