CLASSIC WOODEN BOATS ENJOYING SUMMER CRUISING

Over the 2025/26 xmas / new year period a couple of woodys have been sending in photos of classic craft that they have seen out and about. Angus Rogers onboard the motor launch CENTAURUS has been mooching around the Coromandel / Bottom End of Waiheke Island and Murray Deeble on his Townson yacht MORGANA in the Bay of Islands.

The evil weather we had around the 27th >31st keep a lot of boats in the marina and those out were not moving around much . Angus recorded winds of 68 knots in Te Kouma at anchor.

Quite a few washed ashore and sales of SaltAway will be high this month with a lot of dinghies / outboards flipped over in the high winds.

Southern Seas., previously named South Seas, last appeared on WW back in 2014 (link below) At the time she was for sale at an asking price of $85k, currently she is for sale with bids starting at $25k and a ‘buy now’ figure of $65k, which includes marina (I suspect, rental only).

Back in 2014 we were not able to successfully ID the designer / builder and from her tme listing, thanks Ian McDonald, still can not. Possible build date is c.1963. We know that she is 34’ in length and built of 3 skins of kauri on opposite diagonals and powered by a Lees converted 6 cyl. Ford D series diesel.

As always keen to be able to confirm her provenance.

Southern Seas (South Seas)

SOUTHERN SEAS (South Seas)

photos & details ex Ken Ricketts
The present owner was told SS was a ‘Shipbuilders kit set’ (was there such a thing?) & possibly built at the Wade River c.1964. She is a 34 footer built of 3 skins of Kauri on opposite diagonals & is powered by a Lees converted 6 cyl. Ford diesel, with an underwater exhaust, & by the size of the propeller, possibly has a 1 to 1 gearbox.

When purchased 14 years ago she was called South Seas but the owner has extended the name to Southern Seas.

She is presently kept at Gulf Harbour & was previously moored at Westpark Marina.

She was out of the water for several years for a fairly extensive refit & including substantially rebuilding the cabin top, which had been in bad shape.

SS is for sale at around $85k & the owners can be contacted on 027 696 2700

A little too modern for my taste but a nice little ship that appears to be well presented.AH
