Mystery Yacht – Sailing Sunday

Who can ID this?

photo ex Rod Marler

Unless you saw her hauled out, ID’ing this classic yacht will be  a challenge 🙂 but we have some serious train spotters out there, so lets hear your picks.

The ww follower that gets it right will win a copy of Baden Pascoe’s great book ‘Launching Dreams – Percy Vos- the boats & his boys’

T&C’s

1. The owner is not going to win, you are already a winner 😉

2. Anyone that ‘hangs out/works’ around Westhaven is not going to win 😦

3. The judges (thats me) decision is the final  & no correspondence will be entered into 🙂

Sailing Sunday – Mystery Yacht

Sailing Sunday – Mystery Yacht
photo ex Keith Ottaway

Keith was having a clean out & found the photo below, he presumes it’s a contact print from one of the glass plates he has from his wife’s great grandfather Collins collection.

Not sure of the date – but the collection starts around 1895, looking at that ship that is dressed in the background – this looks later than that  – possibly up
to  1920.

So todays mystery is – name the boat and the date. The name most likely starts with a T or a W 😉

Sailing Sunday – Vanity V

Sailing Sunday – Vanity V

I know I’m bad for posting the above photo taken by Luis Rodriguez of 12M Vanity V from the Royal Danish Yacht Club, seen here at the Puig 12m world champs in Barcelona. But you would have to agree that there would be no problems motivating the crew to put the kite up 🙂

Sailing Sunday – Tango

TANGO

photos taken at the 2014 Classic Yacht & Launch Exhibition

Tango was Jim Young’s first keel boat – designed / built in 1954/1955 & launched in 1956. As Doug Reid commented at the 2014 Classic Yacht & Launch Exhibition – Tango was 20 years ahead to the pack, with her world first, on a cruising keel boat, ‘spade’ rudder & short keel. Prior to this keelers had their rudders faired into their long keels.

Constructed of heart kauri planking  – single skin, caulked on spotted gum ribs. Her specs are: LOA – 9.45m LOW – 8.06m Beam – 1.83m Disp – 3500kg.

Photo updates from Graeme Salter (owner)
The out-of-water photo really shows off her lovely lines, which most people do not get to see, also check out the keel rudder set up.
The second photo was at the Mercury Islands February last year (2013)

Week-end Crusiing Yacht Race to Waiheke Island
Photo ex Simon Smith, courtesy of the Sir George Collection.

A collection of yachts from both the Akarana Yacht Club & Ponsonby Cruising Club, in a combined race to Matiatia, Waiheke Island.
Photo taken on a Saturday shortly after the start of the week-end cruising race.
Whats the yacht in the forefront? Extra points if you can name the yachtsman stowing the tender 🙂

BONUS

And as a wee extra check out the link below (click blue type – The Racing Tender) to Classic Yacht TV & watch the newly restored American schooner Kelpie of Falmouth, designed by Francis Sweisguth, raced for the first time after her 17 month restoration in Cornwall. The event is the 2014 Pendennis Cup. http://www.thependenniscup.co.uk/
Note – Kelpie of Falmouth is ‘just’ the racing tender ……………….. the mother ship is the legendary schooner, Mariette.
