CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH – FLORENCE – Getting Some TLC
The classic wooden launch – FLORENCE has made several cameo appearance on WW, mainly via Dean Wrights camera as he has been cruising the Bay of Island.
Back 2013 we had a peek down below and then in2014 we had a wonderful insight into her past – links to this two stories below
Last week while in Opua for the re-launch of ALMA G II, I spotted FLORENCE hauled out.
Florence was designed and built in 1910 by H N Burgess, Parnell Auckland – as was yesterdays woody ALBERTA – that man had a very good eye for designing good looking craft.
The question of the day – what’s happening on the bow with this two small section cut out, both port and starboard sides.
CLASSIC 1927 WOODEN GAME BOAT – ALMA G II RE-LAUNCHED
For the last 18+ months WW has been following closely the refit / restoration of the 1927, Collings & Bell built game boat – ALMA G II.
On Wednesday I pointed the car north and attended the re-launching celebration at Opua, in the Bay of Islands.
Today is about sharing the day with all the WW readers – In previous WW stories (links below) we have extensively covered her past and how she progressed to what we are viewing today.
Tomorrow on WW we will run the videos I recored of the speeches, Waiata and blessing.
Co owners (brother & sister) Shelly and Brett Arlidge, grand children of the original owner – E C Arlidge, are to be commended for ensuring ALMA G II will still be cruising the Bay of Island waters in 100 years time.
I really like the interior fit out, its a take on the old school look and she even sports a reconditioned Ford Lees 130hp diesel engine, no ‘black box’ electronics connected to this engine.
Boatbuilder Craig McInnes and the team at CMC Design have excelled themselves with this project.
The game chair and salon table are original 1927 items.
The gallery of photos comes to us from the cameras of yours truely and professional B.O.I. photographer Dean Wright. As always click on photos to enlarge 😉
THE PEOPLE – A fantastic number of people turned out to celebrate the re-launch, seems anyone and everyone with a link to the boat or game fishing in the Bay of Islands was there.
CLASSIC EX GAME BOAT – SAPPHIRE – A Peek Down Below
Back in August thanks to Dean Wright uncovering a launch day photo (see below) of the 48’ Oliver & Gilpin built ex game boat – SAPPHIRE, we got an insightcintohow she looked back in 1972 and we also uncovered a recent out-of-water photo.
How thanks to Ian McDonalds hawk eyes searching tme we get to have a gander below. Enjoy.
WAIMARIE – CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH – A PEEK DOWN BELOW
Last September Dean Wright shared with us photos of the Oliver and Gilpin launch – WAIMARIE on launch day, link below to that story. At the time it was recorded that the date was Sept 1964 and she was 32’ in length. WW Sept 2023 https://waitematawoodys.com/2023/09/22/waimarie-ii-2/
Now thanks to a recent tme post we get to have a gander down below – interestingly the launch date there was given as 1960 and her length being 34’4”.
Built from kauri planks in the carvel technique. Forward motion is via a Ford 80hp Diesel engine that gives her a cruising speed of 8 knots.
Today thanks to the eye / camera of Dean Wright we get to have a virtual Fiordland woody cruise aboard the launch – MONOWAI III.
Lets start with some background – Dean and partner Deb are ‘frequent flyers’ when it comes to these cruising grounds. They were back there last in May 2019. As before guests of Andy and Brenda Bell aboard their launch – MONOWAI III for a week in Fiordland mid July.
This time they flew into Dusky Sound and worked their way North, Breaksea, Charles Sounds before flying out of George Sound a week or so later. They aced it with brilliant, calm weather and just a bit of rain. The photos above show a few of the amazing anchorages down there.
MONOWAI III is a 47’ Saunders, built by Harold Saunders in 1976, carvel kauri construction. Her beam is 11’10” and she draws 4’6”.
CLASSIC WOODEN BOAT CAROUSEL – Launch Day & Present Day
Bay of Islands based woody and professional photographer Dean Wright and his partner Deb have just returned from a couple of weeks afloat in Fiordland, thats another story.
Today we see the 1967 Oliver and Gilpin launch – CAROUSEL, on her mooring in Te Anau. Dean also sent in the b/w photo from her launch day (Nov 1967) on the Wairoa River. Which solved a mystery for me, I had the same photo but no reference to the boat name.Links to previous WW stories below.
CAROUSEL resides these days on Lake Te Anau and operates as a charter boat.
Being a professional photographer, BOI woody Dean Wright is seldom without a camera near by, which is a bonus for us. Over last weekend (Kings Birthday) Dean was out enjoying the bay on his classic woody – ARETHUSA and took the above photos.
First up is a stunning open day boat that Mike mentioned that he had seen out a few times on the Kerikeri River and at last got close enough to take a photo.
The Gladden yacht – is WINTERLUDE, owned by Bram Cone. I’m told she is as impressive down below as what we see in the photo.
Lastly the very smart Salthouse launch – TAPUI, owned by Mike and Robi Quilter. Mike is a life member of my good bastards woody club, having taken a chainsaw to the flying bridge that was on TAPUI when purchased . See and read more here https://waitematawoodys.com/2015/09/04/tapui/
The launch Miss Lidgard appeared on WW back in May 2013, at the time we learnt a lot about her history and generated good chat in the comments section – see the story link below. Lots of photos and details. https://waitematawoodys.com/2013/05/05/miss-lidgard/
Miss Lidgard started out as a work boat, built to transport light cargo to the whaling station on Great Barrier Island. Then c.2013 she was converted for game fishing work out of Whitianga. The photo above is from that time frame and comes to us from the Tauranga City Library collection via Dean Wright.
On Friday, Bay of Islands woody Dean Wright sent in the two photos above that he had taken in Pipi Bay on Thusday early evening. The top photo is the the 39’ bridge-decker Pathfinder, previously named Eunice K. Pathfinder was possibly built c.1948 and her design is a tad dubious so I won’t speculate. Lots of photos and details in the two previous WW stories – links below and remember to read the comments section. In early 2023 Pathfinder was for sale on tme, looks like she has found new owners and the pose of the individual in the cockpit tells me they have found their happy place 🙂
The second photo is of the schooner Rat Bag, an unknown to WW so keen to learn more. Again the two geezers onboard appear to be very content with life. I wonder how many seagulls have been caught in that web of lines 🙂
UPDATE ex JASON PREW – photos below of Rat Bag
Input ex K Ricketts – The EUNICE K > PATHFINDER was also called & known as the LADY VI when used by Pam American Airways at Mechanics Bay in the later 1930s or 1940s – photo below of her showing an identical bridgedeck & porthole layout along with an identical mast (edited)
Input ex Nathan Herbert – very early photo (date unknown) at Mechanics Bay, Auckland. Thats her center front. Middle boat is Rautangi.
