CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH VIVEEN – A PEEK DOWN BELOW

CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH VIVEEN – A PEEK DOWN BELOW

The classic wooden launch VIVEEN is one of Colin Wild’s early landmark motor launches, built in 1924 for W.G. Rapley of Devonport. A vee bottom bridge-decker VIVEEN has always had an impressive turn of speed.

Her original  power plant was a 35hp Kermath but that was upgraded to an even more high-powered Winton. Her early owners raced her consistently until launch racing died out during the Depression when feeding such monsters with benzine became impracticable.

Berthed in the Milford Marina for many years, she relocated to Thames marina in early 2000’s.
Todays photos are a gallery from 1938 to more recent times. Recently she appeared on tme and thanks to that listing we get to have a gander down below.

1960’S NOSTALGIA – CLASSIC WOODEN BOATS AT WARKWORTH TOWN BASIN

Same day – different angle

1960’S NOSTALGIA – CLASSIC WOODEN BOATS AT WARKWORTH TOWN BASIN

Todays woody photos popped on the Warkworth NZ Old Time Photos fb and comes to us from Alison Wallis via Maurice Sharp. The photo was tagged – Warkworth wharf late 1960’s, around Christmas time.

The classic wooden launch alongside the wharf, pointing downstream has to be TASMAN , the 1927 Colin Wild built beauty.

The bridge-decker anchored mid stream is a mystery – at first glance I thought – LADY RAE the 1948 Chas Bailey design, but a quick WW search proved once again I was wrong.

So woodys can we put a new to the bridge-decker.

LABOUR WEEKEND WOODY ACTIVITY

Time to start thinking about boating for Labour weekend (Oct 24>27). The Kawau Boating Club’s Spring Splash Regatta is a great event and there is something for everyone. Details below. Next week I’ll supply details on the motor launch activities.

WOODEN LAUNCH ROYALTY – ROYAL SAXON & LUANA AFLOAT

Last week WW was contacted by Tom Rowling in regard to a story we had run on the yacht BEACONLIGHT. Tom reminded me that he was the owner / custodian of the 33’ classic wooden launch – ROYAL SAXON, built in 1930 by one of New Zealand’s best boatbuilders – Colin Wild.

Now I didn’t need to use the WW search box because ROYAL SAXON is one of the most beautiful woodys afloat and has been on my radar for a long time. ROYAL SAXON is just perfect to the eye, which is a challenge in a sub 35’ craft. She is also probably one of the most photographed classic woodys in NZ, due to being moored off Kaiteriteri Beach, Nelson, most summers. Kaiteriteri is the gateway to the Abel Tasman National Park and all commercial tourist craft go past her as they head to the national park.

The top photo above of her at Kaiteriteri, I took in March 2019 while holidaying in the area – WW story & more photos at this link https://waitematawoodys.com/2019/03/08/royal-saxton-varlene-a-trip-to-abel-tasman-national-park/ . In the 2nd photo, ex Tom, we see ROYAL SAXON  last summer off Fisherman Island in the Abel Tasman National Park.

Tom sent in several photos and commented that the bow-on photo was taken by reporters in 2003 when he retired as Master of the Golden Bay after 30 years in their employ.

The photo of the two ‘gents’ shows the previous ROYAL SAXON owner – Rick McCay (on the left), handing over the register of the ROYAL SAXON in Tom’s cabin aboard the GOLDEN BAY in Auckland on the 5th August 1995. Copies of the register at the bottom of todays story.

Now Rick McCay esq. is a charmed man having owned and owning two of the most elegant classic wooden launches in New Zealand- ROYAL SAXON and LUANA, I would have questioned his sanity selling ROYAL SAXON if it wasn’t to buy LUANA, built in 1920 by M T Lane and seen below in the two Bay of Islands photos.

Back to Tom, he has owned ROYAL SAXON for 30+ years and commented that she is 95 years old and still continues to give pleasure to family, friends and visitors to the bay.

Tom also shared with us another in the Rowling fleet, a vessel he had built in 1994 at the ‘The Boat Yard’ which was attached to the Maritime Museum in Auckland at the time. Tom named her after the first commercial tourist launch that started operations at Kaiteriteri in 1955. The vessel is kauri planked, red gum ribs, teak gunnel strip, masts and spare dragon. She’s rigged as a gaff rigged sloop. In Tom’s words – all old looking to fit in with its owner. She sails beautifully and reasonable dry unless you drive her hard. The plan is similar to the sea scout cutter but reduced in length by 2 feet to make it easier to sail single handed. Photo below on the beach at Karterteri.

CLASSIC LAUNCH RUAMANO – A JOURNEY GONE WRONG

CLASSIC LAUNCH RUAMANO – A JOURNEY GONE WRONG

Over the years there have been several mentions on WW of the loss of the 43’ Collings & Bell built launch – RUAMANO launched in 1925 at Freemans Bay, Auckland.

Let us not pussy foot around – loss is the wrong word. At the time maritime authorities used stronger words e.g. ‘crew abandoned it’ / ‘questioned the need to abandon’ / ‘vessel was not in a life-threatening situation’ / ‘crew appeared to have simply had enough’ / ‘lack of experience may have been a factor’ / they bit off more than they could chew’.

On New Years Day 2001 the NZ classic boating community lost one of its finest craft, and reading the reports it appears it did not need to have happened.

Recently WW was contacted by Denis O’Callahan, past co-owner of the wonderful Colin Wild built woody – TASMAN. Denis commented that he had been working on preparing a summary of the logbooks from the TASMAN. Nine volumes from 26 December 1971 to 12 December 2020.

In the back of Volume 6, 24 October 1998 to 27 July 2002 Denis found taped in the clippings from the NZ Herald, dated 2 January 2001, the front page and an internal page telling the story of the loss of the RUAMANO.

In the TASMAN log, dated Tuesday 02-01-2001 while the launch was cruising the Mahurangi area a note was added to the log book that read “Newspaper from Warkworth reported loss of RUAMANO on fool hardy attempt to repeat 1925 circumnavigation of NZ (see clipping at end of log)” . The photos above are scans of the original NZ Herald press clippings ex the TASMAN log, given to Alan H at WW.

I encourage WW follower / readers to take the time to read the NZ Herald news stories and make your own decision on the sad event. As always you can enlarge the photos by clicking on them.

CLASSIC WOODEN BOAT SPOTTING IN THE BAY OF ISLANDS

CLASSIC WOODEN BOAT SPOTTING IN THE BAY OF ISLANDS

Last week I received a note from Denis O’Callahan, past owner of MV TASMAN, Denis commented  that he had been sailing in the Bay of Islands with his son Logan on his Farr 10.20 “Drums of Time”.

Logan wanted to explore the KeriKeri inlet in his newly refurbished wooden dinghy so they rowed up to the Stone Store, observing the many boats on pile berths along the way.

In the top photo we see the Brooke families Colin Wild launch LINDA, which resides in Kerikeri these days.

Later they were at Paradise Bay, Rangapukapuka and photographed the bridge-decker TAMAROA – link here to previous WW story on her https://waitematawoodys.com/2020/09/21/tamaroa/

Later in the trip they were at Matauwhi Bay anchored near the ketch/yawl – OKERE. History unknown, can we learn more.

Finally, as Denis was preparing to go ashore for the bus trip home they were anchored at Paihia near an old gaffer named FROLIC.

Logan later leant that FROLIC is from Hobart and is preparing to head up into the Pacific soon.

CLASSIC 52’ WOODEN LAUNCH – TRINIDAD – A Peek Down Below + A Call For Expressions Of Interest – SOLD

CLASSIC 52’ WOODEN LAUNCH – TRINIDAD – A Peek Down Below + A Call For Expressions Of Interest – SOLD

Regular WW readers will recall the owner of TRINIDAD, David Cooke, died in late 2024. David and Barbara were the custodians of this magnificent motor yacht  for over 25 years and the decision has been made to find the next custodian.

There are only 5 classic craft in New Zealand that I would rate as A1 standard and TRINIDAD is pretty close to the top of the list. None of the other 4 are likely to come on the market in the foreseeable future – these craft only change hands in the 25>50 year time frame e.g once in a generation.

TRINIDAD has benefited from a succession of caring owners that have all maintained her in consistently exceptional condition.

The quality of materials, construction and craftsman ship is evident throughoutand attests to the fact that she has been well loved and cared for by her owners, past and present. Reflected by the fact that she always gathers admiring looks and comments when underway or at anchor.

She presents in suburb condition and retains her original aura, character and pedigree. At the same time careful integration of modern systems and technology ensures the very latest in comfort afloat.
TRINIDAD just ticks all the boxes: • 50’+ • Triple skin kauri planked • Built by John Salthouse, design influences from Colin Wild • Gardner engine • Off shore / NZ circumnavigation history • Fitted out for extended cruising • Diesel cabin heating  • Rigged for motor sailing

And the price – $400,000 – So woodys is a vessel like TRINIDAD on your bucket list – and if the answer is yes or even maybe – now is the time to act. If it’s not you, please forward todays story to friends and colleges that need TRINIDAD in their life.

Initial expressions of interest via email to garethcookenz@gmail.com

SOLD – sub $300k – The bargain of the last decade. New owner named Ian Walters. Anyone know his background ?

CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH TRIP REPORT #2

MANUIA

05-01-25 INPUT ex PAUL DRAKE – In support of the pic of MANUIA above, here she is below in the 1970’s? with original dodger. No doubt the higher dodger improves the liveability of these old timers (ALBERTA – LADY ADEAIDE etc) but it does not enhance their looks. Sometimes I wonder if lowering the cockpit sole could be an option if more headroom is required. There is nothing quite like a straight stem flush decker!

MARISE
REHIA

CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH TRIP REPORT #2

Today we get to visit a few of the bays and check out the lucky woodys that have managed to escape the marina. The first photo comes to us from Simon McMullen and we see MANUIA at anchor at Ponui, the unmarked bay next one around from Chamberlains. I love the sheep on the beach, Simon commented that there were three donkeys also roaming the beach at times.

The second photo shows Sarah and Peter Wren’s Salthouse 37 – MARISE at anchor at Man 0 War, Waiheke Island.
Peter also supplied the gallery of photos of Amanda and Joe Telford’s Colin Wild launch – REHIA.

CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH – OKAREKA – A Peek Down Below

CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH – OKAREKA – A Peek Down Below

The classic wooden launch OKAREKA popped up recently on tme (thanks Ian McDonald for the heads up) The listing states she was built in 1952 by Colin Wild, is 36’ in length and powered by twin 75hp Ford 2704 diesels.Being sold as-is-where- is.
Can we learn more about her past.

Morning woodys – there was a typo in the spelling of the boats name it wasn’t Orareka its OKAREKA, previously named FERG AND FERGY. Sorry for the confusion – you can view and read more about her here https://waitematawoodys.com/2015/08/17/okareka-2/

30-01-2025 INPUT ex BARRIE ABEL – photo below of OKAREKA moored off Brooklands Boating Club on the Clevedon River.

THE REAL REASON FOR TODAYS STORY –   Sadly plans are a foot to close the winter haul out area at Little Shoal Bay, Northcote.  Yeap another one under the axe of Auckland Council. THE REVAMP OF REHIA

THE REVAMP OF REHIA

Early last month we ran two stories on the 1938 Colin Wild built launch – REHIA and her upcoming refit at {the} Slipway Milford yard. Links to those stories below. 1st Report  https://waitematawoodys.com/2024/05/03/classic-launch-rehia-gets-a-birthday/

2nd Report https://waitematawoodys.com/2024/05/10/rehia-2024-refit-report-2/

Jump forward to last Saturday morning and she is sliding down the rails looking rather grand. It is always a big ask ($$) to bring these craft back to better than as launch presentation. But the feel good factor when you walk down the dock or row away from her in a bay is priceless.

There is a saying that I believe originated from Frances Herreshoff that goes like this “if as you walk away or row away from your boat, you do not look back at her, you own the wrong boat”

Over the last 2 years her owners have had one major focus – to retaining/ restore all her classic characteristics and charm. Well done to the Telford family and the team at the yard.

A few minutes before REHIA was launched my RAINDANCE also splashed after a brief haul-out for a face wash and bottom shave. Sitting for 2 months on her marina and with the engine not working, RD had a very impressive beard + a plastic bag around the prop 😦

REHIA 2024 REFIT – Report #2

REHIA 2024 REFIT – Report #2

Last we we reported in on the 1938 Colin Wild built launch – Rehia and its xxxxx underway at the Slipway Milford. Today we get an update on the work-in-process. With the current good weather Auckland is experiencing the team at the Slipway have not been holding back, in fact even Cam Malcolm has emerged from his engineering workshop to get ‘on the tools’ 🙂

Sometimes it is quicker to build new than try and save – so a new cabin door has been added to the work list.

The wonder finish Uroxsys (Alwood) always repays attention to prep, so the 100% back to bare wood will look stunning when it gets the treatment. Her owners will reap the rewards of this work for years to come, and as I said last week, you can’t spend too much on a Colin Wild craft 🙂
