Whats Happening With Caprice

Whats Happening With Caprice

The launch Caprice has made numerous appearances on WW over the years – back in 2013 she was for sale for approx. $30k and again in 2018 for $10k. In January I was contacted by Brett Stanaway who sent me the two photos above of Caprice moored in Mill Bay, Mangonui, Northland. At the time Brett commented that he found the tumble home in the stern quite pronounced for an old timer like that. I believe she is 34’ in length and powered by a 60hp Fordson diesel. Type Caprice in the WW search box & to see more photos, there has been a lot of speculation as to her designer/builder.

In the photos she is looking a tad neglected and crying out for some TLC. Do we know if she sold back in 2018 or still with the same owner? The bones are there of a nice woody – it would be a shame for her to deteriorate to a condition that would rule out anyone taking her on as a restoration.

Can we get an update on her status – if its still for sale, would be nice to find a new owner.

MOATA & CAPRICE

Todays photos are from Bruno Redwood’s facebook page & show the 1937 Moata anchored in the Clevedon River c.1965, the river was ‘in flood’ at the time. The 2nd photo also shows the 34’ launch Caprice, built in 1916 by the Grandisin Bros.

The last photo, just of Caprice c.1966, again on the Clevedon.

Want To Get Into Classic Boating, For Less Than $10k?

CAPRICE

Woodys – Caprice has to be the buy of the year (so far), was previously listed at $30k, her owner (last 35 years) needs to sell her. Price dropped to $10k. Will someone buy her. She measures 34′ , has a 60hp Ford & as you’ll see in the photos below – is a lot of boat for the price. More details on her here https://waitematawoodys.com/2013/11/17/caprice-2/ Thanks to Nathan Herbert for the trade listing heads up

A CAPRICE was built by the Grandison brothers in 1916 and looked a bit like this eventually but was longer at 36ft. For many years she was owned by John W Andrew, the Ford agent. Around 15 years ago she was at Mangonui owned by Les Barclay of Redan Motors, Kaitaia. Ken Ricketts knows her well. Same boat or just same name?
I reckon PATERANGI wasn’t built under that name. Any clues as to the original? She sank in Shoal Bay in April 1973.

The launch Caprice & Silver Bay, Waiheke Island

In the 1950’s the Guthrie family leased a beach house + 10 acres (the only house in the bay) at Silver Bay, Waiheke Island. According to Roger Guthrie it cost one pound a week on a 20 year lease. The house sat right on the foreshore & still stands there today (& still the only house in the bay). The family would haul their launch Caprice out on the beach, right in front of the house. In the photos above the starboard side is being cleaned in Silver Bay, then a few days later the port side is done in Arran Bay, Wirihana is seen in the background, its a great photo of both boats with Ruth Passage seen in the background.

Thanks to Roger Guthrie for the photos & background info.
