Kiwi woodys Jenny and Malcolm McNicol sent me the below photo essay from the Port Townsend 41st Classic Wooden Boat Festival from The Puget Sounds in Washington State USA. They were holidaying in the Sounds and got to enjoy the festival.
The McNico’s are members of The Rotoiti Wooden Boat Association and are the proud owners of Tauraka, which has featured on WW.

AROHIA – A Peek Down Below

Given that in the first photo above the A-class keeler, Arohia is flying a Logan flag I assume that she is a Logan design, odd that her owner would leave that out of her 4sale listing……….. We do know that she was built in 1949 by Colin Wild for John Seabrook. The timber was supplied by Gordon Pollard on the proviso that he would get first option to buy if ever it was sold. As a result the best NZ kauri was used, hand picked by Gordon Pollard. Full length (47′) planking, triple skin kauri.

Arohia has an impressive racing history both local & off-shore & is now for sale by her owner of 34 years.

OMEGA BY QUALITY BOATS - 24.11.15 - 1

OMEGA

I received an email a couple of weeks ago asking for info on the launch Omega. A search of my files turned up the above photo, ex Ken Rickets that was tagged ‘Omega by Quality Boat 15-11-2015’. Never made it onto WW back then because it was a solo photo & did not show much. Given Ken’s abode, the photo is most likely to be taken at Gulf Harbour.
She looks a little racey, so with the right engine I imagine she gets along.
Interested to find out more Omega.

12-05-2018 Update ex Matt Hambrook – I bought Omega in Dec 2016 she is currently berthed at West park marina.
We reconditioned the 150 hp Ford engine in June of 2017. She cruises at 9-10 knots, and has a top speed of 15 knots.
Omega is 35 feet by 11 feet and was built by Quality boats in Tauranga in 1965. Designed by Carl Augustin.
We’ve many miles around the Hauraki with our 3 young kids and plan to do plenty more.
Any more information on her history would be much appreciated.

Built by one of NZ’s leading bespoke furniture makers ‘Rose & Heather’ – its design was inspired by the structural elements of a classic yacht & is handcrafted using traditional tools – the spokeshave & drawblade. A friend of mine owned a house in Ponsonby that was once owned by one of the Rose & Heather family – had a one of kitchen made by the firm – rather nice 🙂

Lady Eileen the 48′ Shipbuilders / SupaCraft launch, built in 1947 is currently undergoing an extensive & very impressive restoration by owner Hylton Edmonds. Now Hylton needs no motivation but to just keep him on the straight & narrow I have published the above photos from the Tudor Collins collection that were emailed in by Ken Ricketts. Apologies for the condition of a few of them, a little ropey – but worth publishing.

A Mystery Launch Quiz – Win A WW T-Shirt

I was sent the above photo yesterday & its tagged ‘Westhaven 1981’ – the first woody that can ID the launch wins a WW T-shirt. Entries have to be via the WW Comments section. I have delayed the ‘going live’ time on the post till 6am to handicap the night owls 🙂

On the subject of WW T-shirts its almost two years (Nov/Dec2015) since I offered up the shirts for sale on WW, the response was amazing & I’m always chuffed to see where they pop up around NZ & the world. I have been getting steady enquiries from people wanting to order shirts & have a back order list. I have contemplated a new design but the existing is just a winner, even with the younger set – ownership of a WW T is big in my sons flat, so much so that they won’t hang them on the washing line, as they steal off each other. The old ‘1st up best dressed’.

What I would like is some feedback on the colour of the shirts – previously the bulk of the shirts were dark (royal) blue, but I’ve done brown, black, white, grey & even pink – In a few hours I’m going to follow up this post with a quick survey on colour preference, would really appreciate if you completed it – will only take 30sec.

In a few weeks I’ll send out details on ordering so you get them before Xmas.

A Cool Day Out @ Motuihe Island – Sunday Oct 8th

von Luckner Centenary Event – Sunday 8th October

On Sunday 8th October Motuihe Trust is commemorating 100 years since the daring escape of Count Felix von Luckner from the First World War internment camp on Motuihe Island. There will be guided walks and interpretive talks while you stand at the locations where the events happened. You will also have the opportunity to visit the regenerating native forest  areas where more than 400,000 trees have been planted and many endangered birds, including little spotted kiwi, plus skinks and geckos and the iconic tuatara have been released and are thriving.

This is a free event but you need to register so we can plan the day.

If you are taking your own boat, register at volunteermotuihe@gmail.com  or phone 0800motuihe.

Bring a picnic and there will be a sausage sizzle and ice creams for sale (bring cash) and tea/coffee for a donation. Wear comfortable walking shoes. You need “walking fitness’ and the walk is not suitable for small wheeled pushchairs.

WAIMARIE II

Waimarie II was built by Oliver & Gilpin. The photo above was taken in 1984 & comes from Dean Wright’s recently digitized collection.

Dean commented that she was bought by Gerard Fitzgerald in 1986 and run as a charter boat in the Bay of Islands for two years, then someone bought her changed her name to Kiwi Cruiser and ran her for many years. Sadly Waimarie II hit Tapeka Point (B.O.I.) one night and was a total loss.

Do we know any more about her?

NUKUTERE – Part 1

The owners of Nukutere have asked if the WW readers can supply anymore details / history on their launch. We know that she was built by A. Sang & Sons, of Wellington in 1942 & she is 46’ in length & kauri planked.

Currently powered by twin 80hp Ford (Lees) diesels – installed in 1979 that push her along at between 9>10.5 knots. Home these days is Onahau Bay, Queen Charlotte Sound in the South Island.

She may have been used as a patrol boat in Wellington during the war.

WW understands she is 4sale – would be nice to see her head north & join the CYA cruising fleet 😉

A Lot Of Boat For Not A Lot of Money

The 1934 Cox & Filmer (Speedcraft Boat Co.) built Robyn Gae has had a very interesting & colourful life – you can read all about it on the WW link below. Robyn Gae has been ‘hanging-out’ on trademe for a very long time waiting for a woody to takeover her ownership, I in fact gave the sale a plug on WW just over one year ago, but still no takers.

It is rare these days to find an almost original condition classic that is just in a run-down condition. On face value, mechanically she is good, she has just suffered from a lack of exterior maintenance – in my eyes nothing that could not be fixed by a wooden boat enthusiast with the basic skills. Her interior is very ‘as-built’ but that is all good,most woodys have had square edged MDF cabinetry fitted & need to be gutted, give RG’s interior a good scrub with sugar soap & a lick of paint & you could go boating this coming summer & start a rolling restoration next winter. I suspect the right buyer could own RG for not a lot on money. Take a look at the wonderful old photos of her in the WW link & you’ll see the potential she has to be a stunner.

So woodys, we must know someone thats looking for an entry level classic……………..
