Percy Vos Dory

Waitematawoodys follower Sam Leijen, has asked for some help, In 1964 Vos built an 18ft dory at a cost of 300 pound, that was used in the Waitomo Caves for many years, it was retired in 1990 and now sits at the Waitomo Museum under the lean of the roof. Photos above, including the plans.

Sam is keen to get a better understanding of the plans so that one day he can build a replica. He is looking for a better understanding of some of the plan details & asks for any comments to clarify the meanings in the plans.

Hopefully a ww follower can help Sam. I can email the plans if anyone wants a better ‘view’.

Tuatea

TUATEA

photos ex trademe, details ex Ken Ricketts.

39 ft 6 inches built by the Lane Motor Boat Co. in Riverview Rd Panmure in 1954. She has spent much of her life game fishing out of Tauranga, initially, then Whitianga & to the B.O.I., & back to the Whitianga region, as at now.

Present owner Colin Orr has owned her for 11 > 12 years & previous owners include Ron Elliott in 1950s & 60s who sold her to Morris Mitchell who initially kept her at Whitianga, in the later 1960s or early 70s, & he owned her until the mid 1980s. During this time he relocated to the B.O.I. where he sold her.

She presently has a 6 cyl. 135hp Ford diesel. She is of the era & stable, of Sou East, Nor West & Tangaroa, with her distinctive coamings styling, especially in the mid section.

Some classic boats end up with a block of flats on top, this old girl has an apartment building 🙂  Ken & I agree that her cabin top / open flybridge, as shown in the early B & W photo, suits her perfectly.

Liberty

Stephen 46′  – USA Classic                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     Liberty was built in the USA & imported into  NZ from California last year (2013).

She is for sale on trademe for $275k & in my eyes is great value for money – to build her would cost 3x that price & then some.

Other than the motors – she has been extensively refurbished:-

New fridge and freezer, New hot water cylinder, New electrics, New switchboard, New LED Lighting , New engine room insulation , New anchor winch motor, anchor and chain, New batteries 700 amph, New inverter – shore power, New stove and hob, New upholstery and carpet’ New toilet’ New Large Raymarine chart plotter – fish finder.

Achernar

Achernar

ACHERNAR

Todays post is another boat from the 2014 Lake Rotoiti Classic & Wooden Boat Parade, Achernar is rather special, being the only launch designed by R L (Bob) Stewart & built by Collings & Bell for Bob’s father. You can read more about her past by entering her name in the ww search box.

I post her for another reason, her owner Don Atkinson is a star in my world, when he purchased Achernar in 2008 he removed the flybridge – give that man a cigar 🙂

Achinar after makeover by Lanes

Suzie

SUZIE

NZ built (kauri)  in approx. 1935-40, Suzie is 16′ & based on a Chris Craft design. She has been in the same family since 1955 & underwent an extensive restoration in 2011.

Pictured here at the 2014 Lake Rotoiti Classic Wooden Boat Parade.

Echo

ECHO

details & hauled out photos ex Ken Ricketts, editing & on the water photos ex Alan H

Echo was built in 1935 in Onehunga by Coulthard & is an excellent example of an almost totally unspoiled original 32′ classic tram topper of the early to middle 1930s era.

Her present owner, John Rea, a retired boatbuilder himself, has had Echo for approx. 10 years & keeps her in the Wade River. She is powered by a 4236 Perkins Diesel, which was fitted in the 1970s.

During his stewardship, he has put a lot of time & effort in splining the entire hull, hence the permanent eggshell finish, a job, of which, she is well worthy.

John told Ken he bought her in Totara North, Whangaroa, where the previous owner, Graham Armstrong, had kept her for a good number of years (at least 10 he feels). Armstrong owned or leased a small shop on the foreshore by the boat ramp. Previous to this she belonged to the Ashby’s, a boatbuilding family in the Bay of Island, they upgraded the original dodger, which was lower & ‘squarer’ than the present raised version, which is a very practical modification & in Ken’s view, is still aesthetically balanced & acceptable.

John believes at one stage she was owned by a man of the cloth – a Reverend (name unknown) & that she was possibly on the Kaipara Harbour for a while. This possiblility is backed up by the fact she still has the same marine grade high quality carpet from way back & when vacuuming John is still getting black sand in reasonable quantities out of the carpet, which he thinks is West Coast sand.

A lovely boat, which must have an interesting history, so hopefully there will be some additions to this story from others to fill us in on the original owner & confirm the build date  & maybe even ID the ‘Reverend’ 🙂

Harold Kidd Update

This launch was advertised for sale by Serena Armstrong of Totara North in 1999 as being built by Les Coulthard in 1935. I had serious doubts about that at the time because she’s clearly much older than 1935. I cannot imagine Les building such a launch in 1935 as his launches of that period were much more up to date eg LUCINDA.
I can track an ECHO on the Manukau from early 1912, a flushdecker, which Les could have built because he was living at Mairere Road, Onehunga at the time but was only 23. That ECHO was built for Stan Vause who was killed in WW1.
My pennyworth.

Lady Margaret (Oliver & Gilpin)

LADY MARGARET – WHANGAROA

photos ex Dean Wright

There have been numerous Lady Margarets featured on ww, it was a popular name & must have been a good luck charm, as most as still afloat.

The above LM is 42′ in length & was built in Tauranga by Oliver & Gilpin c.1958. Harold would say ‘she has the typical O&G flair for dramatic style’.

She spent a lot of her life chasing game fish. The photos above were taken by Dean Wright in the Whangaroa Harbour.

Silver Dollar

SILVER DOLLAR

In the last week my spies have sighted Silver Dollar at Great Barrier & Kawau so as my mother used to say “she gets around”. All I know is her stern says Scotts Landing, Mahurangi & was built in 1958. Keen to learn more about this launch with an unusual cabin.

Update from JohnWicks

he and her sister-ships were built by Bob Swanson at Blackwood Bay in Queen Charlotte Sound in the 50s. Bob later moved his boatbuilding operation to Picton, at what had previously been Ernie Lane’s yard. As a small boy I was at either her launching or that of “Maritza”, one of her sisters.- memory not wot it wuz :-)
She hasn’t been lengthened, though that dodger over the cockpit is a later modification.
Neat that she still has her original 2 cylinder “Jimmy” shoving her along. Those hulls are easily driven, and don’t need a lot of power.
I’ve always thought those boats were very handsome; my admiration is tempered by the difficulty of getting from the helm station at the forward end of the house to the foredeck. My father had the slightly smaller “Palomino” which had a more conventional sedan layout and was easier to work single-handed..

Updated Photos  (20/03/2014) from Paul Stichbury (ex Ken Ricketts)

The b/w photo was taken c1958 at the launch at Blackwood Bay, Picton. According to John Wicks (who was there with his father, but not in photo) the gent centre stage with the braces & hands in pockets is Bob Swanson . The photos also show her original (& still there) engine at the time of being reconditioned in 2011, all that was required was new sleeves, pistons & bearings (there was no wear on the crankshaft).

2014 Lake Rotoiti (Nth Island) Classic & Wooden Boat Parade – Snapshot

This collection of photos is my attempt to record the entrants & the venue of this spectacular event. The team behind the whole weekend also deserve a big shout out as it was all pretty slick & the hospitality showed to the out-of-towners was first-rate.

Enjoy the show, sorry its a bit long, but there are just so many wonderful craft on the lake. I have included a few bits of ‘eye candy’ (close ups) 🙂

More photos here, including from the launch picnic at Wairau Bay
