Hungry?

Two of my favorite boat food photos, sent to me by CYA member Zach who is based on the Kaipara Harbour. Simple kiwi seafood, the BBQ’ed mussels are to die for & I can almost smell the hot smoked fish & mussels.

This ones a blast from the past, Aumoe the 1913 Tom Le Huquet designed launch rafted alongside Radio Hauraki’s pirate radio ship – ‘Tiri’. One has to wonder what she was delivering………………….

Bruce Tantrum - artisan model boatbuilder

Boats have been a passion of Bruce Tantrum for more than 6 decades, and building model boats has been part of that passion.

In addition to models he has twice built keel boats for family sailing, for racing and cruising offshore.

In recent times, he has built complete fully rigged models from scratch using the original lines and construction plans. These models include work and leisure, power and sail boats, and include designers George Steers, Charles Nicholson, William Fife, Olin Stephens, Robert Logan Snr, Arch Logan, Percy Vos, Arthur Collings, Bailey and Lowe, Bruce Farr, and Laurie Davidson.

Bruce has also built 5 models for Team NZ of race yachts for the America’s Cup, the TP 52 class and the Volvo Round the World race.

Maroro

Maroro

Maroro – built in 1907 by the Matheson brothers at St Mary’s Bay for themselves. Her plans came from Rudder magazine and she was therefore rather unusual in design in the local context. For example she has a “spoon” bow and a vee transom. She gained fame from being the winner of the RNZYS Rudder Cup Ocean Race of 1908. A foray was made to Great Barrier on Saturday 22nd August 2009 by Colin Pawson, Alan Houghton and Harold Kidd to inspect Maroro at Okupu and make decisions as to whether the launch was worthy and capable of restoration and the logistics of doing so. The launch is in extraordinarily original condition. The only major additions to the hull are a very sensible dodger which was built on to her in 1920 by the Lane Motor Boat Co. and sponsons both sides.
Late 2009 Maroro was barged back to Auckland & is now in storage awaiting restoration.
