Juliana @ the 2014 Lake Rotoiti Classic & Wooden Boat Weekend

Juliana was built in 1930 by Sam Ford & now resides on Lake Rotoiti, the pride flag ship of Lake Rotoiti commodore Fraser Wilson. Fraser bought her as a bare neglected hull, with no bulkheads, engine, underwater gear, mast or anything else & undertook a major 3 year restoration /rebuild at the hands of Lake Rotoiti boatbuilder Tony Mitchell. The attention to detail & standard of workmanship is second to none. I was fortunate to go on board & on Friday night & see her up close – stunning.

Lady Crossley

I had the good fortune last week to be aboard the newly restored 1947 Colin Wild launch Lady Crossley.

She had just returned to Auckland from Craig McInnes  Opua yard – via a xmas BOI cruise & the Mahurangi Regatta.

Craig did his apprenticeship with Jim Ashby of Ashby’s Boatyard in Opua.  But like all good people Craig had a great crew and painters helping him on the project. The end result a restoration to a standard that even the demanding Col Wild would have signed off on.

The attention to detail is amazing – check out the rope work on the control levels.

The Musket Cove Fiji, 1985 decals confirm that Lady Crossley has seen some blue water under her keel.

I spotted Moana at anchor in Coromandel Harbour between Xmas & New Year. A little digging resulted in a trademe listing so if you believe that, she was built by Lanes in 1954 & is a kauri carvel planked, large volume displacement launch at 42.5′. Powered by a 6LX Gardiner. Appears to by well fitted out in terms of modern day comms & navigation toys etc.

Just a pity about the block of flats on top 😦  , but as they say – each to their own.

Now my bitch of the day – why do people selling classic boats (both the public & brokers) almost never include the boats name in a listing. Makes it bloody hard to find the listing & only drops  the value, as the serious potential buyers are most likely to know the boat or know someone that knows her.

Harold Kidd Update

Ted Gilpin told me that she was built by Lane Motor Boat Co. for game fishing in at Mayor Island by Alan Hunter and that Peter Parsons had a hand in her design and construction.

Currently for sale on trademe, this bridgedecker could be a good buy for someone wanting to get into classic boating.

She appears to be very well presented & excellent value for money.

The listing says she is a 1952 Collings & Bell but HDK advised this is incorrect & she was built by Charlie Filmer. She sleeps 6-8, 10m (32.8′) long, with a 2002 90hp motor. While Picton based, thats not a big issue, ‘Boat Haulage’ are not that expensive, if you are prepared to wait for a return trip.

Harold Kidd Update

Stuart Findlay of Paunui Road, St. Heliers owned her in 1957 and may well have been her first owner. He was followed by Solicitor Arthur Bourke of First Ave, Stanley Point in 1959. Her original engine was a 100hp Scripps-marinised Ford Mercury V8. 

I can’t fathom why she is now claimed to be a Collings & Bell boat. The APYMBA records show her as built by Charlie Filmer. She doesn’t look Collings & Bell to me anyway. 

Probably some oracular shellback advised an owner that she was C&B. That’s the process that has given us today more Logan, Sam Ford and Lane Motor Boat Co launches than they ever built.

Waimiga Re – fit /launch

WAIMIGA

Now Waimiga always was a very special launch, she would feature on a lot of classic owners bucket list. Her pervious owner looked after her like one of the family & now Shane Anderson has taken her to another level, on Wednesday she emerged from Wayne Olsen’s Horizon Boats shed in Stillwater after 4 months of man love. This was a total make-over & unless you knew the boat you would not notice the extent of the project. There is still a few wee jobs to finish on the marina & ‘bits’ to be add, so when she is 100% I’ll post a lot more, in the mean time enjoy.

Yesterday (10/12/2013) saw the 1921 Arch Logan 36′ motor launch Ngaio relaunched after a extensive re-fit & you will note that she has returned to her original colour scheme, a dark (black) navy blue 🙂 To view Ngaio pre-refit click this link to view a youtube clip from the 2013 CYA Riverhead Hotel Cruise. Her owners Ian Kohler & wife are CYA members & Ngaio is a spectacular addition to the classic launch fleet in Auckland.

I again quote CYA duty chairman Bruce Tantrum on Ngaio “Her beauty out of the water, as one would imagine, is complete, simple and beautiful. The hull’s multi layered accumulation of many decades of paint has been removed revealing the symmetrical artistry of master craftsman Arch Logan’s full length bare kauri planking, all in absolutely perfect condition. In the next few days, she is going to be splined and fibreglassed above the water line to preserve her.

Never again will this particular definitive testament of material, form and craftsmanship be seen, never”

I myself have a soft spot for her as she has such wonderful lines, but she is a Logan & they were rather good at knocking up these things of beauty.

Boats are like houses & everyone has their own sense of style & taste – & sometimes thats a worry, but I can happily report that the Kohler’s have enhanced all the original features in a way that Arch Logan would have approved of. As you will see from the photos, as she sits on the marina, she is still a work in progress but only needing the final touches to complete the project.

CADEAU – Logan 33

Now its not often that you will see a fibre glass boat on WW (or a 4 sale listing) but this one is just such an outstanding example of the Logan 33 replicas & for sale at the best price I have seen in a long time, I had to post her. Plus there is enough kauri in her interior to almost appease a purest like myself 🙂

If you are looking for a low maintenance classic retro style boat, at $115,000, ono, this is a bargain.

Construction: 2004,  Fibre glass, Kauri interior,. Length: 10.9 metres ( 35,7 feet) Year:build, 2004 Engine:, 40 HP Lomdardini.

Seafarer

I last posted about Seafarer when she & her ‘owner’ Richard were my haul out neibours at the Devonport Yacht Club in 2013 winter.

Seafarer was built at Opua by Walter Deeming in 1963 to a John Brooke design.

This year Seafarer got an even bigger fright than 2013, mostly based around a new motor & all the bits that go with that – new fuel tanks, new exhaust system etc etc.

You can see from the exterior photos that the standard of workmanship is faultless. Below, it would pass the Colin Pawson test with flying colours 🙂

There is a little bit of me on her, I did the name boards (I’m not that talented, I pulled a favour with a mate) as a thank you for all the advice Richard gave me in 2013.

The new wooden mast replaced an ugly stainless steel ‘thing’ left over from the days when she was a motor-sailor.

Seafarer was relaunched on Sunday 24 November at the DYC . Photos show her, on the club mooring, post launch looking very smart. In my opinion she would be one of the prettiest & ‘biggest’ 28 footers on the harbour & with a 9’6″ beam there is no shortage of living space below.

05-11-2016 UPDATE

Owner Richard Darke has had Seafarer out again at DYC this winter & the biggest item on the to-do list was to strip the coamings & re-do the Uroxsys. A wee oops a few years ago when doing it resulted in a finish that did not meet Richards standards, so off it came & this time the result is stunning – see below.

1. Update from Ken Ricketts – The Leitner was owned by the late Trevor Davis who’s father Sir Earnest Davis bought her for him, in the later 1920s & sold her when he bought the Glenifer for his son, in 1932. — Ken’s father Ralph Ricketts sailed on her on most trips.

2. Update from Adrienne – Built 1913 by Harvey & Lang with a Buffalo engine supplied by David Reid.

Research in the NZ Past Papers, reveals that she regularily raced around the Auckland Harbour (Ak Anniversary Regatta) from around 1913 thru to early 1930’s and the skipper was a certain Colonel White.  She raced as a Bona Fide Cruiser in the 8 to 10 knots division and on one occasion finished a 10 nautical mile course in 3hours 41 minutes and 46 seconds.

3. Harold Kidd Update

The Buffalo didn’t last in her long. It was replaced by a Mason & Porter-built 5″ x 7″ 4 cylinder 50hp engine in January 1914. F Restall and H L Rees owned her from 1926 to 1937. She spent a while at Paremata before she came back to Auckland and was owned by Dr. P A Restall for several years from 1959.

Leitner is currently owned by Roger Clark and partner and cruises out of the Whangarei Cruising Club. At some time she was ‘converted ‘ to a sort of bridge decker-type. The hull and trail boards are still original and some of the windows were used in the conversion.

Leitner is presently owned by Roger Clark of Whangarei & is moored at Kissing Point. Roger purchased her approx. 5 years ago from Half Moon Bay, Howick. She has a Perkins 6-354 which is an identical replacement fitted about 3 years ago, of the engine she had when Roger purchased her.
