Back in Oct 2015 we ran a ‘mystery launch’ story – the boat was ID’s as Miss Picton (later named Mitre Peak) thanks to Harold Kidd we learnt that Miss Picton was built by Collings & Bell for a Captain M. Steele of Picton and was launched in December 1933.

Miss Picton was a replacement for Steele’s 45’ launch Tinopai that was also built by Collings & Bell and launched in November 1932, sadly Tinopai was destroyed by fire in Marlborough Sounds just on month after being launched.

Today thanks to a NZ Herald press clipping, sent in by K Ricketts we get to view the short-lived – Tinopai

LYNETTE – A Peek Down Below

Regular WW readers will be familiar with my view that the builder of f/glass L33 launches, 20 years ago was decades ahead of their time – the market is ripe for low maintenance classic looking launches that has a degree of mast/sail to keep the older sailors happy and tell themselves they have not really moved over to the dark side 🙂

Lynette would be one of the top fitted out and maintained L33’s in the fleet. Her price on tme reflexes this but like most things in life – you get what you pay for 😉

Standard specs – 34’4” in length / 7’10” beam and draws 1’11”/ 35 hp Lomdardini engine  and lots of bells and whistles.

Lady Colleen + Mystery Tug

LADY COLLEEN 

Todays woody the 30’ Lady Colleen was launched in December 1933, built for a Mr. W.D> Burns of Devonport, Auckland. The photo angle / compression isn’t helping the look of the boat.

Sadly 5 months late in May 1934 she was destroyed by fire at Bayswater, Auckland. A gogle search comes up with zip on who built her and the cause of the fire.

Any one able to expand the story more.

INPUT EX HAROLD KIDD -LADY COLLEEN was a “bridgedecker” built by the Invincible Boat Co (Sam Ford) in December 1933 for W.D. Burns of Devonport and that’s what she did best, unfortunately.

I have been contacted by a gent named Phil Doyle who has recently purchased the below painting and would like to know the vessels name and anymore details. Phil commented that the flag may help with the ID.

MYSTERY 1939 LANE LAUNCH

A recent addition to tme this 27’ Lane, 1939 built launch is powered by a Perkins 40hp diesel engine, and that woodys is all we know, other than current home is Whangarei. 

Can we put a name to her and maybe learn where she has spent the last 80+ years.

29-10-2023 Input ex Mark Sorrenson – Looks like Lyrebird. I bought her from Brian Juers in 2004. She was on a swing mooring at that time off McLeods Bay. Brian believed she may have been a Lanes and that she had spent time on the Hokianga Harbour. My late father Graham helped me bring her down the coast to Milford marina. It was a great journey.
We sold her to a couple of gals that lived at Mangawhai Heads. They motored her over the bar and she was on a mooring in the Mangawhai Harbour for a number of years.
She featured on W/W in 2015.
She is very hard chined and would be quite a speedster with a higher powered modern lightweight engine. I had a dream that I would buy her back and repower her, but I’m in the final throws of refurbishing my current boat Manapouri and I will have to wait for the next time she comes up for sale.

NGA KIWA (Ngakiwa) Update

Back in July Dean Wright sent in some photos of the launch – Nga Kiwa being relaunched at Opua in the Bay of Islands, link below to that story. At the time we learnt from Russell Ward that she was designed and built by Percy Vos and the original spelling was Ngakiwa. The launch had previously appeared on WW back in June 2013, link below) – lots of details and photos at both links + read the comments section.

Fast forward to September and I was contacted by John Oates a previous owner of the launch, John was ordering a WW burgee and made comment that he was a previous owner of Nga Kiwa. John offered up some photos of her during his ownership. Then yesterday an envelope arrived in the post with todays photos. I had a chuckle, not often these days you get sent prints and negatives 🙂 

In an accompanying letter John mentioned that he is not sure of when he bought and sold her but the photos show her at the Slipway at the bottom of Roy and Irene Parris’ property Rawene Ave in Westmere. Roy did the boarding platform, the 2 poles on the transom, the rails forward and rebuilt the mast.

The photo on the grid is most likely taken during a pre-purchase inspection.

Hauraki Gulf Mooching

Bay of Islands woody Dean Wright reversed the trend over the Labour Day holiday long weekend and pointed the car south for some Hauraki Gulf cruising aboard his friend’s classic 33’ launch Waikaro. Waikaro was designed and built in 1978 by Roy Parris and later underwent a major refit at the hands of boatbuilder Geoff Bagnall.

Waikaro’s owners, the Smit family have given her a new lease of life with system upgrades and a return to varnished coamings.

Dean also spotted several other woodys out over the weekend – in the photos above Waikaro, AC/DSEA and Hinewai are anchored off Ocean Beach at Motuihe Island. Kowhai is in Waikalabubu Bay at Motutapu Island.

Fair Winds – Simon Smith

No boat story today – one of lifes finest blokes has left us as the result of an accident during the Coastal Classic yacht race – fair winds Simon Smith ⚓︎

WW does not normally do memorials but Simon Smith was not normal he was a rare free spirit in todays grey world – called a spade a spade and kept his friends close.

Amazingly Simon taught at West Lake Boys for 35 years – loved and admired by all – a touching note below from a past pupil – Logan Stevens

RIP SIMON SMITH

I was saddened tonight to learn that the yachtsman accidentally killed during the Coastal Classic was Simon Smith, one of the finest men I have had the pleasure to meet via the classic boating movement. From the first meeting – Simon a true blue yachtie, made me a launch owner, very welcome, we continued to converse regularly and he wore his WW cap well.

I’m sure there are many woodys readers that have rubbed up against Simon and will band together to offer condenses to Simon’s wife and family.

Why is it always the good buggers that we lose way too soon 😦

Condolences also to Simon’s twin brother – David , another good man who I had the pleasure of spending time with in Hobart at the 2023 Australian Wooden Boat Festival.

A note- when my dog of 16 years died Simon wrote me a wonderful, touching letter, as only someone that shared the friendship of a four legged pal would do – he was lots of things but first and foremost he was a gentleman.

MILADY – A Peek Down Below

Todays woody is the Billy Rogers designed and built launch – Milady. Milady was launched c.1955 , approx 38’ in length she is powered by a Ford 130hp diesel engine. In recent times she underwent an extensive refit, in my eyes a tad too modern in places, but certainly a very well presented craft.
