LOOKING FOR HELP IDENTIFYING THIS WOODEN BOAT

Todays woody story could be a long reach – but the woody universe is longer, so fingers crossedHarold Kidd was recently counted by Lindsay Woodward regarding the launch – MINERVA, that Lindsay believed was once her grandfathers (Charlie Woodward).    

Harold commented that he was pretty sure the launch in the photo supplied by Lindsay is not her grandfather’s MINERVA. Records show that the grandfather’s  launch was a 30 footer built c.1912 by Miller & Tunnage in Port Chalmers. The vessel pictured above is much bigger and a later build. Harold also is of the belief that the location of the photo may be Port Levy, Banks Peninsula, South Island.

So woodys can we put a name to the above launch and possibly learn more about her.

MYSTERY CLASSIC MOTOR-SAILER- YVALDA

Recently Alistair McRae sent in todays photos that a friend of his uncovered – unfortunately neither the friend or Alistair know anything about the boat,  and he wondered if any of the WW readers might recognise it and or the location. There is a name on the stern but I can’t make it out – maybe something like IWATO or IWATU.

Alistair commented that looking at the vehicle in the photos the date could be from the early 1960s’.

She is the Yvalda. Came to NZ in the 70’s from Scotland and spent some time in Sandspit at our yard. Yes now on Lake Wakatipu.

UNKNOWN CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH ON THE MOVE

Woody owner Mark Russell (MV KARANGA) sent the photo above of the launch he spotted in Te Hana heading north yesterday. No visual name, two props so most likely twin engined and in my eyes its got Oliver and Gilpin, Tauranga, written all over her.

Can we put a name to the launch and learn where she is heading.

HELP NEEDED IDENTIFYING THESE WOODEN BOATS – Lady Eileen
As mentioned on Tuesday WW has been contacted by Ted Armitage in regard to a collection of glass plate negatives he inherited. Ted had the photos digitised and has sent them thru to WW in the hope that we can identify the location / boats. Today we have two woodys alongside a wharf, the launch looks familiar, if my life depended on it, I would say it is VALSAN, the 46’ Bridgedecker built in 1948 by Lidgard.                                          

As to the sail boat behind – that is too hard for me, may be an early scow.  So woodys can we put names and a location to the boats in the photo.

UPDATE ex RUSSELL WARD – No question of it, its Lady Eileen (confirmed also by Nath Herbert). Look at the launching pic (below) – even got the drop down canvas cover side of the aft dodger.

MUSHROOM VENTS – x2 – vents are 6cm from the top of the deck to the top of the mushroom when closed. Diameter of the outer flange is 115cm


COWL 1/2 VENTS x4 – (2 portside / 2 starboard) ideally between 200 and 300 high. (photos below reference example only)

MYSTERY 1902 PILOT BOAT

Todays woody is very much a mystery boat – the photos were shared with WW by a potential new owner, not sure if the ownership transfer actually happened.

All we know is that its claimed she is a 1902 ex pilot boat. There is a nice hull beneath that more modern looking cabin addition. 

Reviewing the ‘duckboard’ addition that can be viewed in the photos, it does look vaguely familiar – one of the few negatives of the WW site is the search section works on exact wording eg if in a previous story I didn’t mention the words – pilot boat, it wouldn’t show a link.

So woodys can anyone enlighten us on this vessels past.

06-11-2024 UPDATE ex John Bullivant – an update on the boat in the storage yard, by the North Shore airfield. Still there, (now on its’ lonesome) and with a big for sale sign painted on the side. Haven’t heard anything more from the guy who was trying to buy it. Looks like a lot of work but maybe good for someone wanting an older style hull as a starter.

Looking For Help Identifying This Wooden Boat

Todays woody recent popped up on a Lester Oliver fb post and appears via Maurice Sharp reposting.Lester’s commented that the boat at the dry dock at Ahuriri, Napier. The gent on the left is possibly Napier architect Louis Hay. In the background is the Hawkes Bay Farmers Co-Op Assoc. building . The cowel on the cabin top looks very large relative to the rest of the vessel. Anyone able to put a name to the vessel.

I still can’t establish a name for the boat but have a little more information. She was built in Auckland, no builder known, and shipped to Napier in May 1936 as a hull. Later Louis Hay fitted a steam engine which accounts for the small funnel shown in the earlier images. My guess is that the steam plant was replaced with an internal combustion engine later, hence the large ventilator occupying the same hole as the funnel. As for her name, it doesn’t appear in any newspaper articles even those announcing that Louis Hay was the Commodore of the new Hawkes Bay Yachting & Power Boat Club in November 1936.

29-04-2024 UPDATE ex HAROLD KIDD – The hull was built in Auckland and was offloaded from the PUKEKO at Gisborne because of heavy weather.

MYSTERY MAHURANGI WORKBOAT – RURU

Todays woody comes to us from Dave Balderston via hid cubby Dave Stanaway. 

Dave B. spotted the boat hauled out at the Cement Works Marina up the Mahurangi River in Warkworth.

The Daves and myself are keen to learn more about the boat and what the plans are for her.

18-04-2024 Input ex Ari at the Quayside Boat Yard – Yes, Ruru was designed and built by Chris Robertson for John Spencer to help them transport gear and maybe the odd animal between John’s island farms in the Coromandel and the mainland. As can be seen by her condition, she had been left unused for years, with the Spencer’s having larger barges to do this kind of work nowadays. One of Chris’ Son’s, Martin, has since acquired her and collectively with the crew here at Quayside Boatyard, plan to bring her back to her former glory and utilise her as a river/harbour work boat.

Todays woody photo comes to us from the Tauranga City Library collection via Dean Wright.

Based on the photo tag – the date is probably April 1966. The fishing ‘license’ # (someone remind the correct term please) is TA 74.

Anyone know more about the boat and what became of her?

MYSTERY NORTHLAND LAUNCH

ID’ing todays woody will either be very easy eg someone will know all about the launch or it will need the input of many. 

The launch is located in a paddock in the Kaeo / Kerikeri area – on the Takou Bay Road. 

The ‘photographer’ was Murray Deeble, who apologised for the photos – he couldn’t get better pic as Murray had no desire to be shot and fed to the owners dogs 🙂
So woodys what do we know about this craft – given the location, maybe Nathan Hebert will have seen the boat and been braver than Murray.

MYSTERY WOODY ON THE WAITEMATA – Aenone > India

Todays woody photo is slightly familiar but I could fine any previous reference to it on WW.

The photo comes to us from a Frank Hellsten post on the ‘Friends of Vintage,Classic & Traditional Boats’ fb page. Frank restored and colorized the photo, which was taken by a William Leonard Fletcher and resides in the Auckland maritime museum archives. No dates.

Frank commented about the gent wearing a tam o’ shanter hat (a Scottish bonnet worn by men)

I tagged a yacht but she’s really a launch 🙂

Any idea of the boats ID

UPDATE – Nathan Herbert ID her as Aenone, then Roy Jones advised she now named India and resides in Blenheim as a steamboat.
