CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH TEINA – A Peek Down Below

CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH TEINA – A Peek Down Below

Recently the 41’ classic wooden launch – TEINA popped up on tme (thanks Ian McDonald) she last appeared on WW back in July 2024 https://waitematawoodys.com/2024/07/08/classic-wooden-launch-teina/ Great selection of photos here from the past.

TEINA was built in 1922 by the McLeod Bros. In Bayswater, Auckland to a Glad Bailey design. Current engine is a 60hp Isuzu c240

Probably best described as a work in process / project boat, but as the architects say – its got good bones (see photo below), so at the asking price of $8k ono she has the makings of a good woody.

CLASSIC LAUNCH ARIZONA

The classic launch – ARIZONA as made a couple of brief appearances on WW – back in Dec  2022 we were trying to track her down – link below to that story and then in May 2023 we learnt that there was a rolling restoration underway on her- that story also linked below.

Fast forward to last week and ARIZONA popped up in a link ex Nathan Herbert to the McLeod collection at the Auckland Libraries Heritage Collection – there we saw her on what appears to be a 1914 (ish) Northland Cruise. Given she was launched c.1914 could have been a shake down cruise.

In the photos above according to the captions we see her with the launch – ARAB, not 100% sure the captions are correct at times, I have tagged the photos so the woodys brains trust can review and comment.

Wooden Boat Beached at Sulphur Point – 1930’s

Wooden Boat Beached at Sulphur Point – 1930’s

Todays photo comes to us from the McLeod collection at the Auckland Library Heritage Collection via Nathan Herbert. We see a launch in the configuration of a tram top + dog house, has to a 1920’s build most likely a flat top with the later (1930’s) additional of the tramtop and dog house.

The photo is tagged ‘ Launch beached after storm at Sulphur Beach, Northcote (Auckland) , 1930/39.

Can we put a name and builder to the boat.

CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH – TEINA

Yesterday we ran a ‘mystery’ photo of TEINA at Kawau Island, the winner of the name the boat quiz was – John Dawson.

As promised today we get a photo bomb of images of TEINA, all from her original owners – the McLeod family via the Heritage collection at the Auckland Library. Thanks to Nathan Herbert for the heads up re the photos.

TEINA was designed by Glad Bailey and built by Ted & Ray (maybe Roy) McLeod at Bayswater, Auckland and launched in Feb1922.

She was kauri planked and when launched powered by a 90hp Detroit 351diesel engine.

For a woody classic launch that was photographed as often as TEINA was its amazing that she has only popped up on WW once before. She was one of the boats photographed by John Bullivant on a tour of the Tamaki River back in Feb 2019. Photo below.

Would be nice to learn more about the period between 1960 and now + an update on her present location and condition.

McLeod – 36’ Bridgedecker

Todays wood is only a mystery due to a paranoid broker i.e. not want to show the boats name 😦  (Has been ID’ed as McLeod)
What we do know is she is single skin kauri carvel planked, built c.1965 and powered by a Ford 127hp D Series Ford diesel.
Her specs are 36’ x 11’1” x 2’11”. At a guess she is currently berthed in Auckland.
Thanks Ian McDonald for the heads up.

Can anyone tell us more about the vessel – builder, her name and anything on her past.

22-08-2025 INPUT ex ANNE JEFFERY –  My late husband and I owned McCloud for approx a year. Sold 2000 or 2001. She was built by Strongman Boat Builders in Coromandel (Strongman Road Coromandel) Her name was originally Loxsoma when we bought her but we changed it to McCloud. Great Boat. Photos below.
She was kauri plank and we purchased her from a friend. Maurie Palmer, boatbuilder.
