CLASSIC LAUNCH THETIS  – A ROLLING RESTORATION – UPDATE

Last June we reported that the classic launch – THETIS had been relocated toAuckland after several seasons in the Bay of Islands – link below to that story. https://waitematawoodys.com/2024/06/23/classic-launch-thetis-back-home/

Fast forward to last week and I bumped into her new owner Norman Ramsy in my local coffee shop. Turns out after initially spending time at Westhaven marina, home is now across the harbour at Bayswater marina.. THETIS was built in 1955 by Lanes on the Tamaki River, Auckland. Built from single skin/fore and aft kauri planking, her beam is 13’ and she draws 4’. Her twin Greymarine 6 cyl. (1960) 120hp diesel engines were probably best described as a ticking time bomb, in fact I heard one of them ‘let go’ during the pre-purchase sea trial.

Turns out lots of activity has been happening on the boat and Norman sent in the above photos and commented that THETIS is an ongoing project with lots of work in progress.(can’t they all)

A brief summary of work completed to date includes – 

• Engine rebuild by Kris – Marine and Industrial Diesels.

• New manifolds by Aliart – Christchurch.

• New Anchor from Grant Macduff – Ropes Chains and Anchors.

• New Mattresses custom.

• Transport and yard space/hard stand at Boat Boat Haulage

• Walk through Transom and Cabin Roof access for engine removal/refit by Terry – Boat Building and Ship Repair Auckland

I have always said that THETIS is a seriously smart looking craft and is a boat that looks fast even when at anchor, so its great to she her getting the TLC she deserves.

“Brilliant that she’s keeping her original machinery: Raise a tot to the owner- long may he continue on this course.

A fine ship always, but she has Gray Diesels -four strokers, Ken. Not any kin to 6/71 “Dripstroit”, “Rocky Mountain Humming bird” “screaming demons” whatever you want to nickname them, although the first were built by Gray. The War stuffed all that and General Motors did the production by the million.

The 6/71s were designed by a very wise man -Boss Kettering- and with the war looming were to be made by General Motors. And they did by the millions. Some wise man told me they were designed by a smart man for less smart men to maintain.  I’m not sure where Grays came into the process for the 6/71 -don’t think they were involved for long. My books on the subject are not with me.

CLASSIC LAUNCH SEA ROVER  – A Peek Down Below

The classic launch SEA ROVER appeared on WW back in 2014 (link below) Details in the link re past owners. WW AUG2014 https://waitematawoodys.com/2014/08/29/sea-rover-2/

Now thanks to tme and Ian McDonald we get to have a gander down below. She was built in 1960 by the Lane Motor Boat Co.. Kauri carvel hull, her specs are  44’6” x 10’5” x 4’3”. Powered by a120hp Lees Ford engine, that gives her a cruising speed of 7.5 knots.

CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH – DIOMEDEA

Back in 2016 I photographed the 1965 built launch DIOMEDEA on two visits to Whangaroa, back then she was starting to look a little tired, so on a visit last weekend to Whangaroa Swordfish Club marina I was very pleased to see that someone has been sharing the love on her and she was now back to her finest condition.

The 36’ DIOMEDEA was designed by Andrew Donovan and built by the Lane Motor Boat Co. These days there is an awful lot happening up top but given her game boat roots, I’ll turn a blind eye 🙂

DIOMEDEA – CLASSIC WOODEN GAME FISHING BOAT

Woody Angus Rogers recently came across a copy of Sea Spray magazine from October 1965 which had the 36’ Andrew Donovan designed wooden launch – DIOMEDEA on the cover.  DIOMEDEA was built by the Lane Motor Boat Co.

The first thing that Angus noticed was how similar she was to her bigger sister the 50’ AROHANUI, also built by the LMB Co. and launched in early 1965. Which also graced the cover of Sea Spray in April 1966 (photo below).

DIOMEDEA was a magnificent build and spec’ed to the max – the article is an insightful read. Sea Spray magazine described her design / style as a ‘sport fisherman’, she had a beam of 11’11” and draft of 2’10.5”. 

When launched she was powered by a Caterpillar turbo D330 4 cyl. 180hp diesel that gave her a top speed of 14 knots.

On one of my trips (Oct 2022) to Whangaroa I spotted DIOMEDEA docked at the Whangaroa Game Fishing Club marina. In the photo, below, she appears to have lost the hothouse that was up top when Dean Wright photographed her in May 2016, also at WGFC.

CLASSIC LAUNCH THETIS – BACK HOME

Back in March we reported that THETIS had been sold and was now back in Auckland via Exclusive Transport and Boat Haulage. She was taken straight to the Tamaki Haulout Yard.

Early in the month owner Norman Ramsay advised that he scraped and repainted the bottom and had her put back in the water within a couple of weeks. She then motored down the Tamaki River to a berth in central Auckland. In the last photo above the launch in front of THETIS is Norman’s other launch – a Formula 4000 named ISLAND TIME.
A t the time of purchase / sea trial they was an issue with one of the Graymarine diesel engines, so Norman commented that engine work is ongoing in the berth at the moment and they are working through options from rebuild to replacement with Duetz engines. Post this the next step will be the interior.

Very happy to see THETIS back on the Waitemata and looking forward to reporting on the rolling restoration.

THE REVAMP OF REHIA

Jump forward to last Saturday morning and she is sliding down the rails looking rather grand. It is always a big ask ($$) to bring these craft back to better than as launch presentation. But the feel good factor when you walk down the dock or row away from her in a bay is priceless.

There is a saying that I believe originated from Frances Herreshoff that goes like this “if as you walk away or row away from your boat, you do not look back at her, you own the wrong boat”

Over the last 2 years her owners have had one major focus – to retaining/ restore all her classic characteristics and charm. Well done to the Telford family and the team at the yard.

A few minutes before REHIA was launched my RAINDANCE also splashed after a brief haul-out for a face wash and bottom shave. Sitting for 2 months on her marina and with the engine not working, RD had a very impressive beard + a plastic bag around the prop 😦

Mahurangi Regatta Today

Chances are if you are reading this early today , you have missed attending the 2024 Mahurangi Regatta – so todays to give you a heads up about next weekends Lake Rotoiti Classic & Wooden Boat Parade, held every year on Lake Rotoiti in the middle of the North Island – its always an amazing gathering – details here 

And here’s an ideally the above 1948 classic 15’ wooden speed boat , drop an engine in and you’ll be on the water for the 2025 parade.

LATEX – On The Waitemata

Todays woody story comes with an interesting back story. The above photo popped up on an overseas fb page I follow – the poster was a gent by the name of – Frank Hellsten, a retired Finish diplomat living in Sweden. Frank commented – “Royal NZ Yacht Squadron motor launch LATE (or LATELY) in good speed off Auckland. My restoration and colonisation of William Leonard Fletcher’s image in the NZ Maritime Museum archive. The phot is not dated.My estimate is that Fletcher shot the photo in the 1930s.”

The craft looked familiar but the the suggested name ex the pennant wass a stranger to WW. A little ferriting around in the WW archives and we learn that the launches name is – LATEX, built in 1924 by the Lane Motor Boat Company. MILFORD CREEK FLASH BACK

Wouldn’t it be great if we still had businesses like the above around today. One stop shops.

I was up and down the creek today myself – giving the 95 year old a bottom tickle up – 2023 was such a crap season Raindance didn’t get the normal amount of use. So from entering and exiting the creak the watch said 38 minutes – service with a smile, well almost …… things a tad busy at The Slipway Milford with only 96>hrs till closing the door.

TUATEA – Why Do We Have To Muddle With Things

I know an owner can do what ever they like to a boat, it is theirs – BUT it would be nice if owners came from the angle of refinement versus modernisation.

One of the photos ex Tauranga Library archives via Dean Wright, was the top two photos of Tuatea, the 1954 Lane Motor Boat Co built, 39’6” launch. This photo is dated February 1961 and show the game boat looking superb. The third photo is dated 1984 and the location the Bay of Islands, we see a fly bridge added to her. In a previous story a sage woody described her then paint job as ‘calf sh_t brown’.

The in the last photo we see her as she is today – trying to impersonate a 1980’s Riviera………

(yesterdays WW cap winner was K Rickets – who ID’ed the launch as Marline in SE Bay (Opo), Mayor Island, most likely shot from inside the Game Fishing Club)
