MYSTERY CLASSIC LAUNCH – Help Needed Identifying The Craft

MYSTERY CLASSIC LAUNCH – Help Needed Identifying The Craft

Todays classic wooden launch photo was sent in by John Dawson with a comment that while ‘sorting out’ a box of old family photos, he found an old newspaper clipping of the above boat , and on the back someone had written ‘Awhina’. So the first question woodys  – is  AWHINA the name of the boat and then if so what do we know about her.

The bow pennant appear to have cross on it, as well as the hull, so maybe a vessel that serviced something medical related eg – quarantine ship / island , rehabilitation island (alcoholic detox) etc. Supporting this the word Awhina is Maori for – the helper, assist, support.

Can we learn more about the boat.

INPUT ex ROSS DAWSON – From Papers Past NZ Herald 23.7.1919…. Awhina “Hospital motor launch given by the NZ Power Boat Assn. for use in connection with the NZ Hospital ship Maheno….built in Auckland by volunteer labour in June 1915…launched June 10 1915…

30-04-2025 ex ROSS DAWSON – Copy of Papers Past clipping below which gives a full explanation of how this launch came about as charitable cooperation of number of Auckland boat builders. (click images to enlarge)

ATTENTION ROGER CAREY FAN’S

WW has been contacted by Trevor Cozens re the vessel GEM – refer below.

“I am not sure if anyone will be interested, but I have got the building moulds, stem and backbone patterns for Gem, built by Roger Carey. Also the basic lines drawings and a construction drawing for her. I was given them by a chap who used to work for Roger. I no longer have a use for them and if anyone is interested I am willing to give them away. I moved over to Picton from Greymouth 2001 and worked for Jim Carey until the yard closed 2009ish.

My email address is tjcozens@xtra.co.nz.

CLASSIC WOODEN WORK BOAT – GEM

CLASSIC WOODEN WORK BOAT – GEM

Woody John Dawson sent in the top photo above and commented that he saw it on Phillip Carey’s – Carey Boats fb. All we know is she is named GEM.

In the second photo, from April 2020 WW story, we see GEM (#48) post launching. In the 2020 story we learnt from Richard Tosswill that GEM was built by Roger Carey pre. 1961. Sadlly in Dec 1962 she was lost at sea, later confirmed with the discovery of the wreckage.

GEM was 30′ in length and had wonderful lines and that stern …………

Can we learn more about her e.g. was she built as a workboat and if so what was her role.

30-03-2025 INPUT ex IAN MILLER – GEM was built in 1961 by Roger Carey, of Picton, for Fred Hall, a crayfisherman operating from Tatapouri, north of Gisborne. She replaced Fred’s previous boat, Clyde. Sadly, on 27th December 1962 GEM foundered at sea during a storm, extensive wreckage coming ashore north of Tatapouri, but Fred was never found.

More information can be found in the book, BY BOATS WE LIVE, a book about all the boats Roger Carey designed and built, or just designed. It was written and illustrated by Roger’s daughter, Joan Clark, an accomplished artist whose drawings and paintings illustrate each of the more than 40 featured in the book.

GEM
The above photo of Gem comes to us from Brian Cuthbert via Baden Pascoe.
Very few boats live up to their name but this one does – for a work boat Gem is very pretty. Anyone able to tell us who designed / built her?
Also what’s the large boat behind her and who built her?
SOME SERIOUS EYE CANDY
Check out this youtube video of the 130’ J-Class Endeavour in full flight – amazing footage of one of the world’s coolest classics – enjoy.

MADISON ROSE
Madison Rose is a 32’ carvel planked woody with a 10’6” beam, her trade listing makes no mention of the designer / builder, but states she was built in 1910.
She has had a rolling refit over the last few years that has seen new planking & wheelhouse.
The zoom zoom comes from a Ford D series 80hp diesel, that pushes her along at 7>8 knots.
Those davits look a little OTT but I’m sure they are not too permanent.
Current home is Motueka in the South Island – can anyone tell us more about her?

URGENT SOS

I have been contacted by Murray White with the advice that the yacht Gem is due to broken up in the next day or so , she was salvaged from Omokoroa and only the mast was visible.

Murray knows nothing re condition ,but , she has bronze etc worthy of saving .
It was salvaged on behalf of the Harbou Master , but the person salvaging didn’t cover costs so may be an option to salvage something.
Photos are of her at the Bridge Marina , she is about 28 ft .
Will be gone by the weekend – if anyone is interested in saving her or after ‘parts’ – in the first instance contact on 021 227 6242
