CLASSIC WOODEN EX WORKBOAT – AORANGI BOLD DREAMS, DEEP POCKETS

Todays story is targeting any potential workboat conversion enthusiasts , the 60’, 1949 Shipbuilders built ex workboat – AORANGI is a project waiting to happen. Wonderful lines as seen in the b/w photo below and the bonus is down below there are two 180hp Gardner 6LXB engines – condition to be advised ex seller.

In answer to the “where would I keep her” question – there is a Tauranga mooring available at $70 a week.

Last time I look at the bidding, it sat at $619 and the reserve had been met.Thanks Ian McDonald for the tme heads up.

AORANGI

It never ceases to amaze me where photos & details on woodys come from. The above photos of Aorangi came to me from the facebook page ‘NZ Cars, Boats, Motorbikes,Truck,Vans,Utes, via Nathan Herbert.

There was a comment that Aorangi was sitting in a yard behind a pub in Timaru. While needing a lot of work, other than her doghouse, she appears to be very original.

So woodys – what do we know about Aorangi?

Aorangi was built by Shipbuilders at St Marys Bay. Powered by two Kelvins which was unusual for a side trawler. The above photo of her slipped is reportedly dated 9th September 1949.

So a question for the work boat woodys out there – what became of her?

Input from Keith Munro – She is owned by Colin Silby and is on the hard stand at West Park at the moment. It belonged to Ginger Gibbs as well years ago. Washed ashore at Te Atatu a couple of year ago in a big easterly and was a major to re-float.

Russell is rather fond of ‘St Kathryn’ that is alongside Aorangi.  In his words “A damn good looker that I’d give houseroom any time”
