CLASSIC LIDGARD LAUNCH MONTEREY GETS A BIRTHDAY
The 1946 Lidgard built 32’ classic wooden launch MONTEREY has been a regular member of my boating inner circle over the last 20 years of classic boating.
MONTEREY changed hands last year and over winter has been getting a refresh down below. Relax the above photos may appear a tad ‘refrigerator’ in colour but most of the timber trim and furnishing have been removed so the next photos we share she will look smarter.
Monterey is currently hauled out at the Slipway Milford for a Jason Prew Paint Job (JPPJ) and removing the decades of built up antifoam from her bottom. While out some of the systems and thru-hulls will be upgraded.
Very happy to see MONTEREY getting the TLC she deserves and hopefully more photos soon.
Two of my favourite MONTERY photos from the past below ❤️ (The stern signage was ex me having a quiet day in the studio)

Still on the topic but digressing -bear with, it’s the domain of the aged sailor. Feast your eyes on the four cylinder Fordson in the picture above.
Lees conversion Fords seemed to be everywhere in the 60s and it’s great to see them still doing their thing even nowadays. Patiently thumping away and no complexity. Only problem we ever had with Lees Marine Fords was a starter motor that finally failed when we were in Sullivans bay. The field coil was shorting and she had been getting a bit reluctant to twirl over. No problem, several bolts to take it out. Hitch a ride up the river to Warkworth where every garage could do Fords -every farm had one. New field coil and get back down all on the tide (it had to be). And we were away.
No needing posh technicians in white overalls and spotless wagons with a lap top to attend.
I had the joy of peering down on a 200hp 6 cylinder Volvo yesterday owned by an old mate. The myriads of coloured spaghetti electrickery, coils, relays, things that go beep but don’t start the machinery…. jeez wayne! Everything ruled out in three hours by dint of a multimeter and it may just be the key switch on the dash. It took four of us to figure it -one wise one doing all the work with three advisers looking on.
Keep it simple. KISS.

Uh I could stand corrected but I reckon she’s a tad longer than 32. The old man’s “Naiad” was 34′ and I suspect she’s slightly longer than that.

I reckon that stern could generate a lot of business in some circles
