Any one able to ID the graft stock?
Input from Gary Lidgard – Original name Lady Leila, designed and built by Roy Lidgard 1961, hull and decks at Kawau and fitted out at their yard at Bayswater. They sailed her to Sydney for the owner a retired Sea Captain a Mr London based on Sydney’s Pittwater. From memory this was probably their last new build at Kawau. This was a larger boat based on my grandfathers Rongamau, the owner had spotted her when he visited Kawau cruising in his then yacht and placed an order.

Photo below is a blast from the past. I spent many days knee deep in mud sanding off and racing to apply very toxic anti-foul paint before the tide came back in. Captain Dennis Ross promised the youngest crew members that it was 100% safe……….. yeah right.
Help ID This Boat
When I get an email that starts off by saying they are 29 years old and have just bought a wooden boat – I action it fast – we need to encourage the next generation 🙂
Michael van der Putte has just purchased the launch – Crystal Dean, pictured below on the Kaipara.
Michael has been told its a Carl Augustine design, but would like to get confirmation and if possible uncover any known history.
And my question – anyone able to tell us more about the green/red launch – Betsy, making a cameo appearance in the top photo below?

Hi Alan.
Fascinated to see that the Westhaven photo features catamaran “Ninetails”, owned by us February 1982 for about four years, where we kept her up the Okura River near Torbay. She was reputedly Jim Young’s first catamaran he designed and built, and she was constructed in marine ply, 28 x 14 feet, with a 25hp Mercury outboard in a cockpit pod. Spade rudders plus fixed stub keels which could be water filled or not. Would love to find out more of her history or later life?

Hi Allen Manaroa Bay has been in our family for over 25 years,she was one of two boats built by Roy Lidgard in 1960.As Gary said captain London was the 1st owner and lived in Sydney Australia. She is now in Brisbane and thanks to the 2 inch kauri timber and skill of the builders she is still going strong. The other boat we believe was built for the owner of Salters Scales and could be in the USA.cheers Keith

Rod, mum has photos of Rawhiti in green with new doghouse, at Salthouses yard on Kotanui’s launching day early 1962. Then photos of her alongside Queens(?) wharf having her mast stepped.

That’s Rawhiti in her early Hek Marler green livery. My dad’s red Hillman station wagon parked alongside. That would date the photo about 1964…

The green yacht hauled out looks like Rawhiti, as she was painted that that colour during the Marler family’s ownership

To my untrained eye the motor sailor Manaroa has a hull that resembles the larger Paulmarkson 90 footer which I think was a Don Brooke design…just a suggestion

I have studied marine call signs in detail for many years & this call sign could only have been issued in the last 4 or 5 years.
All double side band radios were prefixed ZM, with 4 letters in total ( such as Police launch Deodar , I , II & III, which have all had ZMIH,) or ZM with 4 numbers starting, at ZM2001 or ZMA, ZMX or ZMY, followed by 4 numbers all starting at 2001. — KEN R

Carl Augustine was a successful designer and boat builder of many boats from racing skiffs to runabouts and kayaks. I wonder if anyone has access to his plans still?
The sign with the number ZMQ978 could be a Double Side Band radio call sign – but I could be corrected on that.
