Todays photo photos of Lovely Lady come to us via Andrew Donovan’s photo collection from his days a boat broker. In a previous WW story Harold Kidd told us she was built by R.T. Hartley in Whangarei in 1951 to a design by Dick Hartley. As launched she measured 33’ x 11’ x 3’9”. She looks a tab speedy in the photo and this would be from the Scripps V8 she was powered with.
Lucky Lady was built for game fishing and was featured in the December 1951 Sea Spray magazine. Any one got a copy? Take a phone photo and email it so we can all review firstname.lastname@example.org
Back in August 2015 Pam Cundy sent me the photos below of the launch Star Drift moored in Tryphena Harbour, Greta Barrier Island. HDK ID’ed her as being Lovely Lady. You will observe that back then she was looking very ’tired’ – can anyone update us on her present location and condition?

Stardrift is still in the very same position in the very same state, if not slightly worse than the last post 18 months ago.
A very long way back for her, will it happen?
Probably not, just some photos to look at…
Apparently was still in the water at xmas, have friends with a photo of her in the shot. Would be well worth a rescue if she still floated?
She is now and has been for most of her life “Stardrift” Owned for many years by my Father and Mother, Monty and Dorothy McHugh. He ws an enthusiastic member of the Coast Guard cutter group. She has been pulled from the water at the Barrier and now resides on a trailer out side a house I think in Tryphena. Signs of heavy rot in the hull. Shame as dad kept her in immaculate condition
The Star Drift of Tryphena does remind one strongly of the SS Minnow of three hour cruise fame.
I think she was called ” Sea Forth” moored nearest mooring to the destroyed dinghy lockers Okahu Bay, I sold her, when I was a Broker, to ” Jones ” the owner of Autex Industries in the early days when the Company just started up.
Pretty sure it’s still in Shoal Bay, Tryphena. Been there slowly deteriorating for years. A really nice hull that deserves a restoration.
So sad to see her in recent times as she was in the last image, in her early years, she was always gleaming.
The instrument cluster is one, from recall, that was used by Graymarine engines in that era. — KEN R
