MYSTERY RUAKAKA LAUNCH
Todays woody is 32’ in length and powered by a 45hp Lees Ford diesel. Built in kauri, with carvel construction, approx. 20 yrs ago the hull was filleted and f/glassed. In her trade listing (thanks Ian McDonald) her owner comments that he believes given the style / construction used, the boat may date from the early 1900’s period.
Currently located at Ruakaka.
Can anyone give us the name of the vessel and anymore details on her?

  1. Harold, one of Dads cousins got the boat fromMatakana in the 1990’s and Dad traded it for Moutere, that he had on the Kaipara prior. As kids we used Moutere all over the Harbour. Last I heard of that boat was on Trade Me on Waiheke a couple of years ago. Mum and Dad also had Waihou on the Kaipara as well, but Dad sold her after Mum passed away in 2006.
Dad has posted the picture on trade Me that he believes is taken 1940’s-50’s we believe in Warkworth or the Mahurangi River.

Yes we are all from the Albertland descendants, Dads family were on the Topuni side of the Port Albert River and up into Maeneene River.
Currently wife and I are on our Boat, TideSong. Fishing in the Houhora Harbour afte a week in the Bay and in Whangaroa Harbour.

  2. I saw PUTIKI in storage at Sandspit in 1997 when she was derelict and about to be burnt. She was owned by Peter Cairns of Matakana but was obviously then thoroughly saved by Albie Littin. At the time I thought that she was an Auckland-built boat of c1910-14 with one (or several) name changes along the way.
Steve, is Albie descended through the Albertland Littins/Aldworhs/Ingers? If so we are close cousins.

  3. For sale by my father, Albert Littin after 15 plus years of good service, moved from Port Albert to Ruakaka 8? years ago. Built we believe, late 1800’s early 1900’s in Mangawhai.
Albert has a picture form the earlier days in Mangawhai River to post. After having woody boats on the Kaipara for 40 years, Dad moved north a little to be near family.
She needs a little attention, but is a good boat needing a new keeper.
