Todays story is targeting any potential workboat conversion enthusiasts , the 60’, 1949 Shipbuilders built ex workboat – AORANGI is a project waiting to happen. Wonderful lines as seen in the b/w photo below and the bonus is down below there are two 180hp Gardner 6LXB engines – condition to be advised ex seller.

In answer to the “where would I keep her” question – there is a Tauranga mooring available at $70 a week.

  1. Shipbulders in their post war prime. Another stylish Tim Windsor (qv) masterpiece. Quite a different look from the other Auckland boats.

    I remember her being out at St Marys Bay for refastening in the mid ’60s- Might have been at the Percy Vos yard. The original galvanised fastenings needed replacing. Someone could confirm.

    Kelvin engines were quite common on the coast up here and had a distinctive engine note. Gardners tended to “cackle” (quote from dear old Russell McFarlane) Russell had had built and ran the Stanley Pt ferry Glen Rosa (Kelvin T) for a time and built Mazurka who was a Brijs built steel version of Lady Eileen.) She had an L4 Kelvin. Russell was a staunch Scot from Glasgow. I knew him very well and looked after his ex Whangaarei workboat Abel Tasman for a time.

    A Kelvin man who originally infected me with Kelvinitis. It’s proved incurable though regular doses of steam helps.
