MOOSE
Back in July 2019 we ran a story about Moose Lodge and the lake boats operated by the lodge, one in particular was named Miami and the story mentioned that she was replaced in 1939 by a 28’ launch built by Collings & Bell, named Moose.
Now thanks to Greg Philpott we have a 1954 photo of the boat and a press clipping from the NZ Herald dated 7th February 1939 – see below.
Todays woody question is – what became of Moose.
INPUT ex ALAN CRAIG – She has a Perkins now, still on the V drive. And still sound but in need of some loving. photos below

My grandparents were very close friends of Sir Noel and Lady Cole, and we stayed with them for several days when we were travelling in NZ in 1974. I am *almost* certain I have a photo of the Moose, and that I rode on it across the lake to the natural hot springs every day–isn’t life grand in NZ? :). Unfortunately, my photos are in storage in Melbourne–if I get down under in the next few months I will look. In any case, I know that I at least saw the Moose, as Sir Noel gave my grandfather and me the most insanely detailed tour of every last square metre of the estate. Really happy to hear it is still around!

When I last saw her a year or so ago I would have thought the basic restoration would be uneconomic.
Allan C may know more but I would be surprised but delighted to see it back on the lake in my lifetime.
It is part of Rotoiti

Moose sits in the lakeside boatshed at Moose Lodge. She needs repairs but is still very restorable. The present owners have this task on their list..

In the late 1960’s the old Dodge petrol motor was removed and from memory replaced with a similar reconditioned motor. After the death of Sir Noel Cole the launch Moose was sold in 1976 as part of the chattels which went with the sale of the Moose Lodge estate.
