RAKIRA

Rakira is a carvel kauri launch / motorsailer, built in 1955 at Kawau Island. She measures 29.52’ & is powered with a 54hp Mazda Bongo diesel motor.

That’s about all her trademe listing tells us, if the Kawau build is correct, we must be able to uncover more about her provenance.

Thanks to Ian McDonald for the listing heads up.

The New Zealand Clinker Boat booklet winner – Is Mike O’Dwyer. Well done 🙂 A lot of you need to read the entry conditions i.e. via email. I’ll give way another copy on Friday,so look out for the quiz.

  1. I owened her and sold her May 2018 or there abouts. Her name should of been Rakaia but I know she was named Sence of Humour and I understand spelt something like this ‘Centsahuma”
Someone living at South Harbour Kawau used to own it. Another story I was told that it was built by a boat builder working for a boat building company on Kawau and I understand with out a plan.
Scott Lescelle owned it for quite a while and did a lot of work restoring her once. He also told me a story how he was contracted to capture some Walabee’s from Kawau for the Melbourne zoo. He had 17 on board in cages and two got out when bringing them to the mainland so you can only imagine the rest of the story.
    Hope this is helpful
