WAITEMATA – Pilot Cutter
photos ex Hylton Edmonds via Ken Rickettts
The above photo gallery shows the 58′ ex Auckland Harbour Board pilot cutter Waitemata from when first launched to her refit to pleasure vessel & as she is today. Her ‘sister’ ship Akarana has featured numerous times on ww.
I’m sure Hylton & others will chip in with more details on her.

At the Kemp Rd property or Te Puna? She always had a cover over her at Kemp Rd

She was still there until recently

I seem to recall Barney Soljak telling me that she had two engines or more at one stage. Any trace of that? She had the Volvo Penta when I first went out on her. Nice old engine but broke the crank at one stage. Too much driven off the pulleys?

The ‘present day’ photo I think is about 20 years old when she was there in my childhood. She lives or at least I have seen her often on a mooring north side of Te Puna

A tribute to the AHB’s shipwrights who did that wheelhouse (I’m told) in house. Real dainty and right purty. The angles are just right -look at that top being parallel to the waterline pretty well. Drop it an inch or two aft and it would have spoiled her entirely. That funnel sets her off. The first boat that the incoming ship sees and they have to be shippy to set the tone of the proceedings. As well as a good seaboat. I was on her as a schoolkid wagging for the day when”Manaia” was launched. I got a good lesson as “Waitemata’s” crew dissected every line of the former.
