KAWHIA WHARF – 1910 – CLASSIC WOODEN MOTORBOATS FLASHBACK

Todays woody photo is of the wharf at Kawia and the large vessel berthed alongside is the harbour ferry – MAHINO.

Of more interest is the collection of small launches , they have a workboat look to them, anyone able to iD any of them.

  1. Some may be -dairy boats?? They brought the cream in churns up fwd in the shade. I seem to recall my father in law just used to keep the cream on his farm in Maruia the milk was to feed the pigs. Butterfat yield was the money. No milk tankers roaring in daily. Just the cream picked up 3 – 4 times a week in season. On a harbour, the boats did it. Glynbird was used on the Mahurangi to pick up cream to take to Glyn Parry’s dairy factory. Then the money dried up and she became a tug.
