MYSTERY CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH AT MILFORD MARINA – NGAHI

MYSTERY CLASSIC WOODEN LAUNCH AT MILFORD MARINA NGAHI

On a recent stroll around the Milford Marina on Auckland North Shore I spotted the classic sedan launch seen above. No name so hence todays story.

Looking a tad too perfect so must be a recent restoration, hopefully the topsides haven’t been given a coat of that thick paint (eg f/glass).

Also a question for the purists – what’s the kosher direction for coaming planks – N > S or W > E, struggling with the upright grain look.

INPUT ex NATHAN HERBERT – The launch is NGAHI and its been glassed and the coamings are teak overlay.

BIG SHOUT OUT TO THE CREW AT TEAM NEW ZEALAND – WELL DONE. Not only are they #1 in the Americas Cup world, several of them have very good taste in pleasure craft – classic woody of course 🙂 The old WW merch was seen to be making an appearance in the cup village

  1. I think we might be looking at an overlay, Doggy man. E – W definitely is the most aesthetic and vertical staves (bevelled edges to emphasise) -but for a trad ship (say Col Wild) the coamings are built up, panelled if you like.

I did hear some scuttlebutt once -may have been from Joe Wheeler when he was building Millie ll for my old man- that Colin Wild used to scull over to the ships in Rotten Row at dead of night and take teak doors and other teak parts for recycling…..

  2. Can’t put a name to this one, but vertical staving with a T&G effect on the superstructure looks best on more traditional workboat types. Not sure I like this application. Could we be looking at ply?
